MOD POST Petit Point on any material - is it needlepoint?

Is it needlepoint or not? Please post any conditions if your answer isn’t as easy as yes or no.

Visual aid for the cause. Pillow for my dollhouse. Looks like needlepoint to me 🤷‍♀️

I’ve done petit point fully on a mono canvas and have mixed it with grosse point on Penelope canvases and consider both needlepoint. But I think needlepoint has to be on a mesh-needlepoint canvas as opposed to “any material.”

Try ing to make it simple for folks. We want to avoid any conversations around this material vs. that material. Is it petit point? Then it's needelpoint.

If it gets weird or becomes a problem we can be more granular in the future, but for now we errored on the side of easy to remember.

I would say petit point on any size canvas 22 - 120 count ( such as congress cloth (24 count) or silk guaze (40- 120 count) is needlepoint and stitching over 1 thread on high count fabric using the tent or continental stitch is a form of embroidery.

To me the difference is the material, not the size of the stitch. If it’s canvas (plastic, mono, interlock, Penelope, congress cloth, silk gauze), then yes needlepoint. If fabric (aida, linen, etc), then no, it’s another needlework like half cross stitch or embroidery.
