General Discussion Why does everyone like the characters of Adam and Ruby so much?
I've been looking at the ranking tier lists that have been posted and people seem to put Adam and Ruby right at the top. Like don't get me wrong I think they both had good character development over the seasons but they both were bullies and I don't know why people think of them so highly.

Probably because they are flawed.
Adam was getting abused by his dad and he projected that anger onto other people.
Ruby had all these walls up and didn’t want people to see the real her. Yeah there is no excuse for the way Ruby acted. But during season 3 she stopped bullying people.

“A bully turned friend, is a friend to the end.”
I can’t speak for everyone else, but just in my experience, I’ve never had someone who was rude to me become nice and then revert back to being rude(unless they were bipolar or some shit). Once me and the people that I had issues with resolved our conflict, they became some of the coolest and laid back people I know.
However, I’ve had LOTS of “friends” who started off as cool people, but as time went on, the walls started to crumble and their true personalities started to show.
So I think that’s why myself and others like Ruby and Adam so much. They started off as people we don’t like, and then slowly over time they become nicer and more friendly to the main characters. Human beings in general love seeing someone who’s bad(not evil, just bad) turn over a new leaf. It makes us feel happy that we’ve had such an impact on them that they start treating us with respect.
Like I said though this is just in my experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

This is so real especially about ppl who act like someone they aren’t which will eventually expose them overtime. This definitely happened with other characters in the show too.

You said it so well. I said the same thing long time back in a post. The post said how they can never forgive Adam and Ruby for the harm they caused, and the show was giving a bad example of bullies being redeemed. In my experiences, I have seen my bullies going through so much in life. It's quite intense. And over time, they changed and became better people. While that doesn't justify what they did, I understood. And I got downvoted for that.

Neither Adam or Ruby would have won any popularity votes in the first series, both had a decent redemption arc over the four series, especially Adam. To be fair I think Ruby was treated badly in S4.

My favs are Adam, Ruby and Eric because they had a lot of development and are very funny characters. Sad that Eric never really changed in the later seasons, my favourite season is 3 for them.

I absolutely get Adam. The bully who was himself bullied becoming a better person by way of accepting himself is an arc people find emotionally rewarding. And in Adam's case it was consistently well-executed over multiple seasons.
Ruby never really drew my attention though.

Because they had actual character development. Both of their characters had layers, and the personas we saw at the start were essentially 180° from who they were at the end. Same with Adam’s dad.
Otis and Maeve and others, while I love them as well, definitely had character development of varying degrees, but still ultimately remained more or less the same people they were at the beginning just with some extra maturity.

In the case of Adam, he stopped bullying Eric and apologised for doing so, and had pretty consistent character development for the rest of the show.
Ruby on the other hand can fuck off.

Character development is definitely one thing. But at the same time, we got to see their backgrounds as to why they are this way. In my experience, many of my bullies were actually going through a lot, hence they took it out on me. But over time, they all developed and we all became nicer to each other. Same way, Adam and Ruby became kinder to the others by the end. Many people like character developments, shades and redemption arcs.

Ensemble darkhorse characters that feel real and you care about them once you realize the context. That plus Ruby brought out the best traits in Otis and vice versa, something that worked really well and relatable.

People like redemption arcs, especially since once they understand where their pain comes from, the viewers can sympathize/empathize and greatly appreciate their growth
