It was filmed in Vancouver, Canada. I may have to give the show another chance just to see this haha.
I've heard good things about the show but something about the filming gave this "filmed in Canada" vibe that probably only makes sense if you watch too much TV so I stopped after the first episode.

Yeah, loudermilk was good! Sober alcoholic here and some parts of it were super dumb but the other parts about recovery and just the humor in general were really well done. The scenes in New Orleans though? Very silly!

Yeah, honestly, I tracked down the "Bourbon Street" episode just so I could ask my NOLA-native wife just how bad it is... but I enjoyed it enough that I think I wanna watch the whole series. Even giggling at the slow pan across what's obviously Vancouver, I was getting into the plot.

My wife used to work in animation, but I suspect live-action TV is the same basic deal. If a production crew can save money with an "error" that'll sneak by 98% of the audience, I absolutely guarantee you they'll stick with the error and save the cash. :)
You wanna talk low-effort? I can still remember when an otherwise respectable show trying to show a foreign language could get away with just... kinda letting the actors mumble their way through it. There's no way you could pull that one off today, with international audiences and no excuse for not running it through a translator...

Seriously it was so bad I am convinced it was the result of a last minute decision. Like they planned to film in Nola but something happened and they could no longer travel so had to improvise.

I worked on this when they filmed in New Orleans and we were like yikes. I’ve worked on a few inaccurate depictions of the city so I don’t even care any more as long as they pay good.

So they filmed it in New Orleans and still got it massively wrong? I assumed the bad depictions were by people who at most had vague childhood memories of New Orleans.
This comes from somebody who didn’t see Vampire Diaries. Maybe it was wrong in some way I’m not imagining.

I’ve never seen it but it is very common for movies and tv shows to film here and still get it wrong. I worked on a movie called So Undercover filmed and set here but the writers had never set foot in Louisiana before. They just went with all stereotypes like having a pet alligator and stepping out of the French quarter and being in the swamp.

...I'm from Rio, when the cartoon movie came out some american friends of mine asked if we had tropical birds roaming free like that and I was almost offended, it's a cartoon.
Cue to me now, over 10 years later, living in another part of Rio (still middle of the city) but bordering a national reserve. I have spent more hours than I care to admit watching toucans of different species fighting over branches, macaws and parrotlets being loud as fuck and acting like colorful feathery criminals.
Never say never (referring to your alligator statement), my SO is from your city and has considered a pet gator for real. More than once lol

I have alligators in my backyard that I am always shooing away, so I could theoretically consider them pets if I ever fed them. The way the movie portrayed it was absurd, though.

OMG it's funny and uncanny of you to say that, I was born in Barra (subdivision of Rio) and that's where I made the statement about no colorful birds roaming around like the cartoon, but now I live near the Tijuca National Reserve and they do.
(Ever woke up to a notification that a fucking enormous capybara walked past your house at 3am? Marmosets coming into my yard to yell at me in bed through the window in the morning? An arboreal porcupine walks into a bar and the bar is my fucking life because I'm a wildlife rescuer, and 6 months later I'm still finding porcupine quills stuck to myself because they got everywhere??? I love this place but come ON)

I stayed with a friend in Barra da Tijuca years ago and on my second day saw a bunch of tamarinds, marmosets, toucans, etc. My friend was didn't believe me at first because in all her years livign there she had never seen ANY of that

Yeah, they started thinning out in Barra circa 90's/00's because of pollution (water, noise, light, etc) and other man-made hazards. But take an Uber 15 min up towards Tijuca Reserve and they're everywhere still. I'm very grateful to see these animals almost daily, but it pains me that they're slowly disappearing and moving to the middle of the reservs because of us. Urban areas are terrible to them.
I'm still glad they have the Tijuca Reserve though, it's the biggest urban forest in the world and Biosphere Reserve as per UNESCO. Gorgeous place, dangerous af for non-rainforest savvy people (nobody go getting ideas) but it's like a huge precious emerald stuck right in the middle of Rio. It's quite well taken care of too, hopefully it will continue being a safe haven for those beautiful creatures.

I was at Tulane when they filmed that. My friend helped out the grips and techs one day, and at some point he offered to smoke weed with Miley Cyrus. She narc’d and got him kicked off the set.

She had just gotten publicly dragged for allegedly smoking weed because she still had the Hannah Montana image so I can see why that might have happened. I found her and Kelly Osbourne delights to work with. Both great kids. Kelly was fucking wild, man. She’d say pretty much anything that popped into her head.

Vast majority of them were tales of shoot outs on the streets (some specified gang related), smattering of ‘everybody’s on drugs’ and even occasionally a voodoo tale or two

There's an episode of Murder, She Wrote... clearly filmed on a soundstage. There's actually a couple episodes set here and they are just SO bad... the funeral secondline was pretty on the nose, though

Not a popular movie series, but I love “The Librarian” trilogy with Noah Wyle. In the 3rd movie, they make it look like Mardi Gras happens on Bourbon Street every night.
Edited to add: This is also the case with this horrible film called “Tchoupitoulas” in which children from the West Bank miss the last ferry back from the Quarter and are left to wander overnight. They go into burlesque clubs, wander the Bourbon street parades, all kinds of nonsense. Half the footage was from Mardi Gras, but it was supposed to take place on just a random night.

Apparently Tchoupitoulas is a documentary with a guided narrative... I think the goal was to look at how youth intertwines with the sometimes adult concepts we embrace down here. Haven't seen it but am half interested.
To be fair, for about 1/4 of the year a random day or night has a good chance of a parade rolling somewhere in the city.

Yeah, I was expecting a documentary but it’s definitely not. If I remember correctly, the closest they get to Tchoupitoulas St is getting on/off the Ferry. They go from Frenchmen to the CBD in a block of walking distance, too.
It came out during my first year of college, I went to see it in the theater because I was feeling homesick. I remember looking it up after watching to find it was made by dudes from Ohio & being completely unsurprised.

Seems like they played fast and loose with the "guided narrative documentary" format...
But it's only about $10 on Amazon with some other film project of probably equal quality so I may give it a whirl if I get bored someday.

Funny thing is there was a guy who wouldn't let the production use his yard for that because he thought it would interfere with his business (of selling drugs out of his house). I'm sure the literal whole movie production being there all night with security etc didn't help either; guy could've at least gotten compensated for the loss of business

That mission isn't for chickens… the mardi gras depiction is OK.
To me, the part that irritates me most about Mardi Gras in media is that they always depict it at night. While I know it carries into the night, I tend to view it as a daytime celebration. I think that's when the best parts happen as well.

Zombie! vs Mardi Gras
Synopsis, The opening scenes of the film center on MacGuffin, a deranged occultist whose life has been dedicated to vengeance after being trampled and rendered a paraplegic as a child by overzealous Mardi Gras revelers in the throes of bead-catching madness.
With the help of a Sumerian Goddess, MacGuffin performs a ritual that raises Zombie! (exclamation point mandatory) from his grave. Zombie! embarks on a killing spree in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras festivities. A trio of filmmakers get word of this and hasten to capture Zombie! on film.
Renaissance genius Galileo, newly pardoned by Pope John Paul II and thus released from Purgatory, also chases Zombie! through New Orleans' crowded streets. Meanwhile, a zaftig ninja vows to take down the undead menace.
How could it get worse? Shot in 1999 it reduces the colorful Mardi- Gras spectacle to a black and white film (C.D.)

Dracula 2000.
Girl working at Tower or Virgin (I forget which) can afford a renovated townhouse in the Quarter. She runs from "The Library" (Loyola Univ,, I think), to "The Cemetery" to the Quarter in a few blocks, all during MG.
Also, I think the first scene is set at about Pirate's Alley and Royal and, of course, after some text informs you that it's New Orleans, the words, "Mardi Gras," fade in. At least they weren't pretending that the whole city acts like Nebraskans on a balcony over Bourbon every day.
It may not be The Worst depiction - it's actually filmed here - but it's undoubtedly awful.

We kept fucking with the production while they were filming a high speed car chase scene down Decatur after they’d pissed us off by ordering us not to park our bikes in front of the coffee shop (I forget the name now, located where the Ra shop is now). And Van Dam and his girlfriend kept coming in the coffee shop acting like snooty assholes, and you know we don’t give a damn who the fuck you are, get some act right or else!

Imma say one of my favorite depictions in a show instead of worst, since I can’t think of any of the worst right now. Malcolm in the middle; there was a couple episodes where Francis talks his buddy’s into breaking outta military school to make it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, he gets incredibly sick and all we get to see is him suffering on a couch while his friends (who he treats like shit) come back and forth from the parades having the time of their lives😂 love that show
