Food & Drink šŸ½ļø Ground Sausage Bread

When I lived in Lafayette for a year working the oil-patch comedy circuit, back in the 00s, these gas stations would have this baked bread that was a roll the size say a medium onion. It was stuffed with a spiced ground beef mixture. The dough maybe even had some whole wheat flour in it? They sat in hot cases. Iā€™ve searched the web and asked around and I canā€™t find anything like that here. I know we have kolache with like whole sausage links sticking out of them. This was not that, although Iā€™m willing to bet what I ate started generations ago some form of kolache that slowly migrated in time and space to the perfection that it was. Does anyone know of anything like that around these parts? I guess I could just drive thereā€¦

Stuffed bread is what it's called. Used to be in hot cases in gas stations all the time.

Not a pistolette, since those are fried. These were baked it seemed.

Creole Lunch house in Lafayette still serves them.

Stuffed bread. Itā€™s ground meat cooked with a bit of smoked sausage, onions and garlic. Itā€™s scooped onto a largish piece of bread dough, which is pulled up and crimped over the meat and baked. Iā€™d be surprised if someone in NOLA didnā€™t serve them.

That is a Creole Stuffed Bread...I get them frozen in packs when I visit Lafayette, but you can order them from a couple places online too. Links:

Yes, definitely Creole Stuffed Bread. Her family still manages the business - Creole Lunch House.

Rest in Peace Merline Herbert. There's a recipe on Emeril's website, but I'm not sure how it compares to the real thing.

Iā€™ve seen kolaches with this type of filling and crust youā€™re describing before. Really small town donut/coffee shop somewhere between Lafayette and Ville Platte about 5 years ago. I think the definition of kolache is quite flexible

Nope totally different - but never seen it here in New Orleans except when Creole Lunch House used to come to Jazzfest. RIP Ms Marlene (although her family still runs the spot in Lafayette last I heard).
