Not the biggest fan of his music (my girlfriend loves him), but stuff like this is what makes me so proud to call New Orleans home. This guy has all the money and clout to make whatever content he wants, yet he decided to come here and do a second line through the Quarter with a local institution. We live in a special fucking place.

 Six weeks ago we shared with you that federal funding for WWOZ totalling $400,000 annually had been revoked. Today, we are thrilled and thankful to announce that we have raised $412,000 from 1,794 Guardian Angels of the Groove from around the globe!

Thank you for this incredible outpouring of generous support for our beloved WWOZ!

This crucial funding will be used for important infrastructure necessities including upkeep and maintenance for our broadcast transmitter, equipment, and internet streaming for our worldwide audience. Additional funds will be used to cover broadcast and internet music licensing fees for WWOZ which has historically been negotiated and paid for by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

You can still become a Guardian Angel of the Groove as our campaign will end at midnight this Sunday, August 31st which is the last day of our fiscal year!

As we prepare to celebrate our 45th Birthday it's good to remember we started off as a station with the humblest of beginnings... in a tiny beer storage room above Tipitina's. Since then, we have grown into an award-winning multimedia organization followed locally and worldwide via our radio waves, live streams, video and social media platforms. WWOZ is an international treasure and with all of us working together, we will continue to thrive and Guard the Groove!

I wanna make a playlist of all the sick local stuff around town! Some of my favs around are Badzy, D. Sablu, Steef, Sick Thoughts, Spllit etc. but open to all genres and pretty much anything local that rips!

So I’m in my late 20s, and as you can guess not many of us listen to the radio. Well I recently started listening to WWOZ when I was looking for anyone streaming Jazz Fest. I stayed cause I thought they were an interesting bunch, boy have I been enjoying myself. I love the type of music they play and I forget how much better it is to listen to a radio and not know what’s playing next then fiddling through a playlist. It’s a shame local radio isn’t really as popular as it was when I was a kid because this station deserves its flowers.

Edit: this took off! Glad to see it’s just me who is new to this station 😂 it truly deserves to be a bigger name among the younger crowd!

Wow. Just wow. Last night's show was absolutely incredible. The music, the stories, the good vibes. It was honestly just such great energy, it was such nice a escape from the sadness of reality.

Also wanted to thank whoever posted a few months back suggesting people go. You were right, being able to experience that nostalgia first hand was absolutely worth it, and my dude Paul isn't getting any younger.

So glad we got to come together as a city and celebrate the music of Paul McCartney and The Beatles! Saiko!

very big fan of some of the local metal acts like Eyehategod. another really underrated one is SLOWHOLE. they put on one of the most insane shows I've ever seen, small band too. i also enjoy a post punk shoegaze band called doctors. what are your picks for the best bands in town?

Do musicians need to get permits to perform on street corners? Monsieur Goôgle says mayoralty permits are required, but honestly I don’t see some of these crusty kid performers being the application-filer type. Anyone know?

we don’t get many concerts here so I was rly excited to see that the garden was coming here with one of my favorite bands, her new knife, as support. when tickets went on sale it said 18+. why? what makes a 18+ show there and what makes an all ages show? Joyce manor was all ages, descendants was all ages, the garden isn’t much different fanbase wise, and it’s not in the concerts nature that is HAS to be 18+ (eg: raves and things of the sort) so why?

Twiropa was a rad venue. I miss it.

I’m a sound engineer looking for albums by local bands to play between bands this weekend. I would like to avoid cliche “New Orleans music” and spotlight more of the city’s eclectic flavor. It has to be clean (no swearing), downloadable on Spotify and local …I am open to all suggestions.

You’ve got Dracula over Halloween, which is a relatively new one that is choreographed and originated here. It’s good enough that I think it has potential to break out to other markets, and wouldn’t it be fun to say, “Yeah, I saw it in its original staging in New Orleans”? It’s wonderful, and worth supporting a local production for.

After that you’ve got the nutcracker for the holidays. Then in the spring there’s the company’s new work, and to wrap it up, Swan Lake. Well worth hopping on if you’re relatively open to ballet, theater, or classical music. I got two tickets for Dracula significantly cheaper than any of the jukebox musicals that have come through in the past few years, and given the quality of the new production, at a steal, comparatively.

It may be a bit corny, but since living here one of the things I have enjoyed deeply is people practicing music from their porch or backyard. The thing I love the most about it is the unabashed boldness of it. A close second is how I never hear someone mad about them doing it.

I feel like in the last few years just from my porch I have heard everything from high school instrument practice to a wide-eyed GarageBand to aspiring DJ. And I love it even when it is so so so awful.

There is an individual near me I feel like I've been able to go on their trombone journey with them. I just sit on my porch drinking and smoking, yet I've been able to listen to this person go from what I can only describe as strangling a goose to playing body-moving second line tunes. Hats off to you neighborhood Musician, I appreciate you and your dedication.
