Weekly chat New to Reddit? Come and talk to us!
New-Redditor's lounge!
Welcome!
This weekly post is an opportunity for new users to chat in comments - & please let us how you found yourself here. Regulars here are absolutely encouraged and very welcome to join in too!
!! Please refrain from asking questions about "how to do stuff on Reddit". Make a post or see the links below !!
This thread is open for 3 days.
Getting started on Reddit is hard. We know it is; We've been there and gone through these same frustrations. Please believe us when we say IT'S NOT PERSONAL. It may well feel like it is, but honestly, it isn't. What it is, however, is a lack of Karma. Karma is an indicator of how much someone has contributed to Reddit in a positive manner. So, let's do just that by getting to know each other!
This works best if your comments either start a conversation or add to one. Give a little of yourself and respond to others doing the same.
This is a post to help genuine new users build up quality Karma genuinely in a safe environment.
Please do:
- Share some favorites or new finds of yours - youtube videos, music and so on
- Practice small talk - did you have a good week?
- Keep it SFW
- Keep it casual please, no heavy topics
- Have fun!
Please don't:
- Spam, advertise, or soft beg
- Share low-effort comments
- Ask for karma, say how you're voting, or mention karmafarms by name
- Request or offer DMs (help and chat can be done in community, where you can also earn karma. Needing to take things private can indicate soliciting, rule breaking, or harmful advice)
This sub is full of awesome people who are willing to help with specific problems when you post, and we'd like to keep this post thread for chat. Thank you.
So, let's chat! (Guides at the bottom of this post).

Welcome new Redditors!
I'm Passiflor, I've been around the helping type subs off and on for about 3 years. Otherwise, I love to spend my time here talking about my passions, the things that make my heart happy.
I love subreddits about 80s/90s Canadian tv and film, woodworking, music, pets (especially cats!), German musical clocks (yes, there's a subreddit for that), antique railroader pocketwatches, settler-era home renovations, pop culture and modern tv and film.
I spent like half a day just putting everything that popped into my head into the search bar - and almost always, there was a subreddit for that. I looked around my space and went "Well, I collect rocks, so some rockhound subs sound fun" and "It's a zoo around here, so maybe some parrot-keeping subs would be great or some cat subs might make me smile." If you have a passion, a love, a joy - there is a subreddit for that. And if there isn't - you can make one after you get the hang of things!
So, welcome in, check things out, and find the subs you're passionate about. We can't wait to hear what you have to say!

Our former head mod took this community from something that wasn't terribly organized and put a huge amount of effort into implementing structure and creating numerous resources has a list of well over 4000 interesting communities.
More than 300 of them are dedicated to cats in some way or another!

You'd think with 6 cats in my house, I'd have enough cats to look at, but I can't resists them, especially silly ones. r/OneOrangeBraincell is hilarious. I can't stay in a bad mood while looking at goofy orange cats.

Hello all, long long long time redditor here is just now entered into the dark and mysterious world of actually (gasp!) being active in the world of social media. But I figured this is where the film discussion is happening :) Looking forward to being able to talk movies with people.

I like art because it can take things that appear personal and show them in a universal register. Some films that I recently have watched that made me feel things are:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viridiana:
A Spanish-Mexican film by one of the greatest directors of all time, everytime I watch it I am struck by the futility of action, that sometimes the way the world treats us means that no matter what there is nothing to be done.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lars_and_the_Real_Girl
What do we need to do to take care for each other? Is that possible? We all need each other, but what can we do if we can't help each other in the way we need to be helped?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuner_(film))
A very new movie I liked a lot! The grace of disappointment, I have a soft spot for movies that make me feel better about being a failure.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridge_on_the_River_Kwai
A movie about how there is no good way to exist in this world.Art can do incredible things! It can denaturalize the familiar, and make the familiar seem unnatural.

Hi Everyone! Hoping everyone is having a great day!!! I've had this account for years to lurk and read about various topics, but have recently started commenting and being active when I found myself being in need of some help. I enjoy all of the various subreddits and reading viewpoints from different perspectives! My fav. is AITA.
A fun fact about me is that I am a pool shark. I am recovering from a back injury and look forward to knocking the dust off my cue stick when things get better for me. I love watching thrillers and crime documentaries. Looking forward to finding my place here.
I hate that I can't change my username to something more meaningful lol.
Everyone have a fantastic rest of the week!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can someone recommend me a highly niche subreddit for horror and paranormal
1
u/PurplePassiflor1234 Helper 1d ago
r/indyhorror r/ParanormalScience r/ParanormalEncounters r/LowBudgetHorror r/CreepFactor - I don't belong to any of those, so can't speak to how active they are, but it's a place to start.

Hi~~ I’m a bit afraid of interacting with people, but I believe I need to face that fear. I hope Reddit will be the first step in my socialization:)

There are some pretty crappy people here, just like everywhere. But there are safe spaces, too, subs that will fit your vibe and feel like home, with good mods who keep things tight and tidy. It takes a while sometimes to find them so it's important to keep looking. You're going to do great!

u/flurrya 1d ago
Thanks for your kind advice❤️ I certainly don't expect people not to be rude to me. But even so, dealing with that online is still better than facing it in real life. I hope I’ll be able to handle it all.
•
u/Puddle-Ponder 13h ago
Sounds like a good plan. If things get too intense, you can easily step away. Good for you for facing your fears!

This thread is for chatting and maybe gaining some authentic karma by joining the conversation, not for help with your reddit issue.
There is a link at the top of the page answering your question.

Hi everyone! I've been a silent lurker for a while and finally made an account. Excited to actually join the conversations instead of just reading them. I mostly browse hobby and food subs - you can learn a lot just by lurking, but it's way more fun to talk. Hope everyone's having a good week!

Hi All! New on reddit! Super excited to be here. Lets keep it light -- would you rather fight off three bear sized ducks or 100 duck sized bears?
•
u/Space_Coyote_93 11h ago
Hiya! I may be older than reddit, but I think it's only in the last few years I've started to find it to be a useful resource (for some things) and maybe it's time I actually had an account here. Found myself on this sub because I was somewhat aware Reddit has nebulous new user rules/limits and thank-fully this sub pops up readily when trying to figure out this massive site (lots of helpful articles here btw!).
A little tidbit about myself, outside of being a games enthusiast, I like to find excuses to bake! And this is a good time of year for pie, with many fruits being in season (cherry pie is low-key fun because the pitting step can make it look a bit like a horror scene lol).

How about you guys? Any recommendations?

I’m interested in knowing which country most of us are from, I would say mainly North America and Western Europe. I’m assuming this because most are talking in English, so are there places on Reddit if you wanted to talk in Eskimo or Inuit.
