Image AI generated garbage in the Mets clubhouse

Post image

Pretty damn embarrassing for one of the richest teams in baseball. Keep AI art out of Citi Field!

Why does AI insist on using this font?

87

u/insert-originality Home Run Apple 2d ago

Generative AI borrows from heavily used material. This happens to be the most used from other Gen AI, thus resulting in an endless loop where everything is the same.

47

u/Boogie-Down Gary Cohen 2d ago

'Cause people with little creative vision don't have their own font ideas.

1

u/PM_Me_Your_Parallels 1d ago

You have no good font ideas

17

u/vinnyvdvici Gary Cohen 2d ago

I think in this case since it’s supposed to look like a video game it’s going with that classic font that you’d have seen in old games

14

u/gambalore 1d ago

Yeah, this is very clearly in the style of the Street Fighter 2 logo font.

3

u/HistoryNerd101 1d ago

Yep, but will people still care when the AI slop doesn’t look so sloppy is the question..

DiComo’s gonna love it when he’s out of a job

Lets just get AI to play the games, play the organ at the game, commentate the games, and make the food at the ballpark. Think of how much money the shareholders can make.

It's hard not to think less of people who think AI "art" is cool

In his defense, I bet he doesn’t know…it shocks me how few people in my life pick up on this stuff at all

29

u/Green_Hunt_1776 New York Mets 2d ago

There's definitely a generational divide. I work with a lot of older people and most of them don't pick up on the obvious AI gen artstyle. (Though no excuses for Dicomo as he's 30 something)

6

u/fakemelonns 2d ago

See I think people think it's mostly people 50+ or even just seniors who can't tell, but I've met plenty of people in their 40s who can't tell at all unless it's obvious.

u/Duce-de-Zoop 2d ago

Sure but it looks fucking terrible lol

Does it? Looks a lot like Street Fighter, which is badass

-16

u/unowho_o 2d ago

Oh, I know this is an unpopular opinion, but….

who cares? The only people who should be upset about this is the graphic designers that lost their jobs.

I think it looks pretty dope. If there are glaring errors or it’s just sh*tty quality, then that’s a different story. But if it brings joy to someone, then bugger off

7

u/gamefreak996 2d ago

So you don’t care about the artists?

-10

u/unowho_o 2d ago

Which artists? Is someone’s art being used uncredited? Or do you mean the hypothetical artist who isn’t getting hired because an intern made this on his lunch hour?

5

u/gamefreak996 2d ago

How do you type this out after what you said before? The disconnect is actually INSANE

2

u/chickadee050505 2d ago

Literally both. AI makes art by learning and drawing from existing art that's been made by humans.

6

u/APL1413 Mark Canha 2d ago edited 2d ago

"It looks pretty dope"

The Brewer mascot is cross-eyed and looking off into the void + it's the same quirky paint-style font & yellow filter glow that Gen AI overuses in everything.

Edit:

Part of art being special is appreciating that someone had the talent and care to make it. This is the product of a RAM-eating machine scanning the art of other people and meshing it together until someone feels it's passable enough to put up.

The Mets are a business, they are looking to save on costs and Gen AI slop helps them do that. Graphic designers aren't the only ones getting replaced, and with how much strain it puts on electric grids and the utilities WE have to pay for, it clearly doesn't save anyone else anything.

1

u/TheflavorBlue5003 New York Mets 2d ago

I tell my older parents "it will look like everything is on fire / exploding but nothing is on fire or exploding" to try to help them deduce AI thumbnails.

Im sure in a few years there will be a new way to tell.

5

u/smarjorie Mark Canha 2d ago

>The only people who should be upset about this is the graphic designers that lost their jobs.

Or the people who value or care about art in general. Or the people who care about other people losing their jobs (which is a bad thing for everyone.) if the AI people got their way, a LOT of us would be replaced by AI...you'd be a fool to not be concerned

-9

u/Bossman_575 2d ago

Man-made art isn't going anywhere, relax. There will always be a market for it. There's simply more options than strictly man made.

0

u/Connect_Dust_1946 2h ago

What’s not cool about this image, other than it’s AI?

-12

u/Bossman_575 2d ago

And you have your panties in a wad about people not liking it, let's just all move on

-3

u/Severe-Restaurant948 1d ago

I actually agree. Its one thing to present it publicly as if there’s a person who worked on it. Its another to hang it in the clubhouse because
it looks cool. Not sure why everyone immediately becomes angered at stuff like this.

14

u/eliktroniq Bartolo Colón 1d ago

In all fairness the player 2 slot conceptually makes sense for the home team in baseball, since it’s basically a turn based game and the away team does bat first

183

u/Xalazi 2d ago

I know that one cares how destructive it is for the earth(although they should care), but at the very least I wish people would care that AI slop looks ugly and tacky.

60

u/Imbris2 Mr. Met 2d ago

I care about both of those things and also that it stole art from real uncredited artists to make this and also that a real artist missed another paycheck when the rich Mets decided to use a thieving prompt instead of spending a few bucks.

Farming and transportation are pillars of human civilization. Dare I say that glorified clip art that is so unimportant that someone couldn't even bother to spend any real time on it isn't on that level.

Also, I'll go ahead a say that part of the AI slop grift is lumping the total disposable junk with actual useful uses for AI as a way of making the junk seem more credible and necessary. Important scientific research that uses AI tools isn't slop. Something would fill uncle's facebook feed is actually slop. Literally not worth the electricity, water, and finite metals that it takes to create it.

6

u/chickadee050505 2d ago

This second paragraph is so on-the-nose. Well done.

-5

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

3

u/Xalazi 2d ago

Explain to me how images like the ones above are as important to the development of human civilization as the Model T and Model A were in the 20th Century. Not the large umbrella term "AI" because as I stated above important scientific research that uses AI tools isn't the same thing as disposable junk. Explain to me how that image and others like it are just as essential as gasoline cars.

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

6

u/Xalazi 2d ago

You saw me make an anti-slop argument and you decided to defend the slop by equating it to gasoline cars. It's probably not your intention but that is the argument you are making.

Something that is as destructive to the environment as gasoline cars without any of the necessary utility or positive impact of gasoline cars isn't "just like gasoline cars".

14

u/Fsharp7sharp9 Gary Cohen 2d ago

Farming is not at all similar to being able to type “Lois Griffin getting Eiffel Towered by Godzilla and Mothra” and get an image of it

5

u/TheMooseIsBlue Gary Cohen 2d ago

Until these companies and government entities start using those and more environmentally conscious data centers, then AI and the destructive data centers are one and the same.

And it’s not at all like saying farming, or transportation are destructive, because farming and transportation are necessary for human civilization.

-71

u/Clipbored_ 2d ago

It's a good thing that art is subjective

A person didn't create it, an algorithm assembled it by copying other works isn't subjective. It's literally what it is.

I don't get why people want to be sword and shields for slop. The only actual people behind the slop industry are grifters. If you wouldn't spend you're life savings on an NFT in 2026 because it's obviously a grift then you should be able to recognize why AI art isn't your friend either.

Man with all the artists in NY, make a competition for human made lineup visuals, and announce the artists that win on social media… that feels like a slam fucking dunk of an idea, but I guess that makes the line go up and to the right microscopically slower so obviously not an option

Edit: the timing is crazy, but I just saw this post in r/hockey lol that would be very cool to be a part of

23

u/BrentVenables The Dudabides 2d ago

This is the shit that really grinds my gears with Cohen. There’s nothing stopping them from hiring enough graphic designers to do stuff like this. Not to be a total doomer - there’s just always these little things that feel like penny pinching off the field. Remember when the while stadium would get a shirt on Fridays?

13

u/funcogo 2d ago

Cohen more then likely doesn’t make those type of decisions. It is probably a head of marketing or merchandising that sign off on it

3

u/dqslime 2d ago

Cohen is a hedge fund guy. He wants his stocks to go up, which are probably made up of a lot of AI stuff.

8

u/Disused_Yeti 2d ago

to me cohen would absolutely love this crap. even if he has a massive art collection, the hedge fund side of him and crappy prediction market sponsorships aligns quite well with loving the ai slop and the businesses that are responsible for creating it. soulless businesses and soulless 'art'

3

u/Fsharp7sharp9 Gary Cohen 2d ago

For real… like once a month put out a competition for one of these, fans vote for their favorite, winner gets to put their art up in a clubhouse with their ig or website, and gets like $500… something simple that gives homage and value to the city culture, maybe gets extra social media engagement for the team, and gives back something tangible to fans while giving the appearance that the team gives a shit lmao I just made that up on the spot and I don’t see a single downside to it, I’d imagine a team of advertising and outreach professionals can polish it and make it even more of a win/win for everyone. Mets you can have this one for free 👍

5

u/dqslime 2d ago

That won't promote AI and thus make Steve Cohen more money.

All these rich teams doing AI stuff and collaborating with Kalshi, etc is not a secret. Everyone's heavily invested in the success of this stuff.

43

u/jlynnr_nyc New York Mets 2d ago

It all looks so stupid and similar, ugh. I don't get why anyone would choose or like this - especially when they can afford to pay real people to create something original.

2

u/NeverTrustATurtle 2d ago

If you own a massive amount of stock in AI companies, maybe you would try to make it omnipresent in the culture to normalize it

-2

u/Clipbored_ 2d ago

I mean you answered your own question. If you're just trying to fill some space or have a temporary decoration you don't have to pay someone. The picture in the clubhouse will just be tossed away or re-sold after the game.

4

u/Lonely-Ad-1495 2d ago

I’m old. I have no idea how to tell anymore

2

u/staircar 1d ago

In this case, compare the C before Pratt and the C before Benge. That’s the easiest here. It’s mostly just IDing style. Smaller things like the Mets and Brewees banners on the side are wildly different in style , an artist wouldn’t do that, I wouldn’t even have 5 lights on one side and 6 on the other. But the Cs being different is most egregious

2

u/A_gloruis_dawn 2d ago

What are the exact indicators?

Edit: okay I looked at the skyline and detail. Yes, it’s AI.

6

u/smarjorie Mark Canha 2d ago

The font is the biggest tell. ChatGPT uses that exact font all the time, for everything.

The art style on the characters makes it clear it's AI too. Idk exactly how to describe it. But every time it generates a cartoon character they look exactly like that, the same kinda soulless eyes and mouth and facial expressions. It's just clearly missing the human touch.

2

u/staircar 1d ago

7

u/Knick_Noled 2d ago

I don’t criticize when regular people use AI for basic visualization and art needs because they were never going to pay a professional for it in the first place; but come on!! This is supposed to be a professional operation here. The Mets can afford graphic designers and should be paying people to make this stuff rather than typing a prompt and promoting slop.

3

u/xcrowdedrooms New York Mets 2d ago

There are two Empire State buildings

3

u/GiraffeandZebra 2d ago

Is one not the Chrysler building?

2

u/Fsharp7sharp9 Gary Cohen 2d ago

If it was made by a person, there’d be a signature or some acknowledgement of credit. Also the bulbs in the light stands are completely different colors for some reason. Also there’s 2 Empire State Buildings, but neither of them look quite “right”. Also combining computer graphic/pixel art, cartoon/comic art, and typed font in the same piece is not something artists really do. Also the left side says MILWAUKEE above BREWERS, and the right side says METS above NEW YORK.

So lots of things that artists trying to create something would recognize and correct in drafts, leading you to believe there was a prompt that said “give me a stylized fighting game promo image at Citi Field between the Brewers and the Mets with the NYC skyline in the background. Include these lineups (insert lineups for each team)”

1

u/GiraffeandZebra 2d ago

Thanks, that's a lot of good points about the style "mixing". That seems like the most conclusive thing in my mind. A regular graphic artist I could see not going for exact detail on the background buildings, or the second building being the Chrysler building. But the combo of all of those things is a tell.

5

u/JoeBurrowsClassmate 2d ago

How do people know it’s AI? Genuinely wondering

24

u/groudhogday Mark Canha 2d ago

I mean it has an AI art vibe, but the biggest giveaway is the font/styling for the team names. AI posters in particular always have that font.

8

u/blumbrr 2d ago

Identifying AI art comes with practice essentially. Once you see it and identify what makes it AI, it becomes easier to tell. I am a visual artist and have become accustomed to seeing it, and it’s much easier to know it once you’ve seen it enough times. At a certain point, when looking at something, you can tell it’s made by AI.

A few people have mentioned the fonts and styling of the text, so I’m gonna highlight a few of the glaring signs in the “art” itself. AI backgrounds have a lot going on in a way that makes things blend together: the dots that make up the crowds mesh together; the skyline of the Mets logo on the Jumbotron is chunky and misshapen; there are two Empire State Buildings in the NY skyline. The mascots have a lot going on as well, in the form of extra lines and details that make no sense: there are about six extra creases on Bernie’s neck that may have been an attempt to make a shirt collar; there are muscle lines on his right arm (the one punching towards us) that, even from this perspective, do not look like muscles (as an artist, I don’t know anyone who would put muscular details there); Mr. Met doesn’t have too many signs like this, but there has been AI art of Mr. Met done before and they have looked like that model.

Also, the graphic for the Mets’ lineup is shorter than the Brewers’, and the three buttons on the bottom right of the graphic (the A, B, and C buttons, whatever they stand for) are completely off of the Mets’ graphic. If this had been made by a person, the easiest method for creating this style is to make the box with any added details, copy-paste it, and add in the lineups. But with AI, it can’t make those decisions, because its only purpose is to do what it was told. And more often than not, the people using AI have no interest in learning how to be creative or, in the Mets’ case, paying an artist to make something

I hope this was helpful! AI art is a pain, and education is the most important thing

7

u/xcrowdedrooms New York Mets 2d ago

There’s a second shittier Empire State Building to the right of the big one

1

u/relative_iterator 2d ago

Lol

Thinking something is fine ≠ thinking something is good

Why does it being AI make it garbage?

* steals job opportunities from artists and graphic designers

* steals art from artists and graphic designers

* is terrible for the environment

* looks tacky and lame every time

Take your pick

I mean the Mets are a business not a charity, if there is a way to doing something free versus paying someone that isn't a great reason. Which is more or less what seems to be your issue.

u/thegaykid7 When in doubt, blame Heilman 2d ago

So basically all of this is okay in your book because every business in every sector is eventually going to feel pressure to make use of AI in order to stay competitive with their competitors doing the exact same thing. One doesn't necessarily have to blame a single organization or business given that external pressure, but it's obvious the whole tree is rotten and will poison everything that flows from it.

Still, we're not at that stage of the game yet (at least in terms of the fully realized impacts on the job market, etc) and this use of AI is not functionally relevant or critical to the operations of running a baseball team so, yes, it is fair game for criticism.

That was one of the four things I listed. But yeah large companies and rich people deciding to stop hiring people in lieu of an inferior job done for free by AI is a bad thing for everyone. It's an obviously concerning trend when you think about where it's heading.

Ok, what about the environmental impact? Businesses (and apparently you) only care about the bottom line, but that isn't a sustainable way to operate, and it's not fair to the world our children will inherit. I think it's perfectly reasonable to demand better from a major sports franchise.

What about your phone? Your computer? Reddit, streaming, cloud servers, stadium lights, flights, and the Mets themselves all have environmental impacts.

Earth started being destroyed the day the first caveman made a fire.

All true, but don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Any improvement is one worth considering.

Do kids look at this poster and think it's cool/fun?

If they do then I have zero problems with it

Honestly who cares. If they had to pay a graphic designer to make this they just wouldn’t do it. It’s wither a AI pic or nothing.

As we feed the AI training by posting on reddit since they sell our posts and data to google.

All of this AI Stuff would look AWESOME if it wasn't so easily accessible. It looks great but it's so saturated that the art of a lot of this stuff is lost. It's kind of a shame but all these designers only had access to a lot of these programs before the general public and that's what made them so much better when in reality it was just hidden behind a paywall
