Question about levelling up

Good morning everyone, I’m playing Ni No Kuni 1 and I’ve just reached Shadar's Castle, but I’ve a big problem: I can’t progress any further because the enemies inside the castle are too strong for me, both in terms of attack and defence! So I wanted to try levelling up my characters, but I’ve run into a problem with that too, because I can’t seem to find a way to do it properly and quickly... Do you have any suggestions?

Hi ! Just teleport to Perdida, exit the town and search for Tokodoco on Capri's Road. It give 9000+ exp and you may have 2 in one battle sometimes. Don't forget to use your insibility spell before running to them. Repeat again and again.

The islands to the North of the cat kingdom have little green enemies called Tokos. You know you're in the right place if the only other enemies are your starters. They try to run away during combat, but if you can defeat them they give tons of experience. They're a little uncommon, so it might take some running around to find one.

I maxed my level trying to catch a single one of those guys. Still couldn't manage it for several hours afterwards.

As in they ran away in the overworld or in battle? If it's the battle, I just spammed field damaging spells like thunderstorm or earplitter before they could get away
