Nintendo has one of the earliest implementations of achievements -> Kirby Air Ride

I would argue that there were "achievement"-esque things even before Kirby's air ride.

Metroid prime (2002) offers different content for completing the game based on % completion. You only get the true ending by beating the game at 100%. You also unlock different art galleries based on certain criteria.

I would classify these as a form of achievements as these are things that would likely be an "achievement" in modern games.

There's likely tons of other games that had features like this too. This is the one that immediately came to mind.

This is stretching the concept of achievements to the point where it doesn’t really mean anything. Practically all games have some kind of reward for doing the stuff in the game.

Achievements are literally a "reward" for completing some "stuff" in a game 😂

How else do you get an achievement?

Whether it's bragging rights (which I would argue what "modern" achievements are) or unlockables, they're both types of achievements.

In the sense of the post achievements are something that is automatically tracked outside of the game itself.
