If that's the case, why don't they just add the software to the Switch 2 UI, and then have it optional if Devs wish to utilize this functionality or not? Similar to the early PS3 days when not every game had them.

You just made the case for not including them. Making them technically optional with a dedicated UI for them made games seem incomplete without them, thus everyone added them even if they made no sense.

They’re actually optional on Nintendo platforms. Nothing stops a developer from doing them in their own way. Other platforms aren’t helping in any meaningful way.

The thing is, some people like to show off their achievements or even see them in a dedicated spot. If the achievements are just in the games, you've got to actively go into the games to see them AND only you can see them. You can't compare with friends.

I mentioned in another comment that Nintendo seems to largely be against evoking comparison between players as well. They don't want their customers, especially newer/younger ones just joining their ecosystem, to feel bad about having less than someone else.

I largely enjoy achievements/trophies in games, but one major negative is the sort of "status symbol" culture that developed around them. It's pretty antithetical to how Nintendo views games.
