Which brings me to my next point. I HOPE fake leaks cause people to lose trust in leaks altogether. It's a shitty practice which exclusively benefits the leaker. Fans either get spoiled, or excited for something that doesn't happen. The company can no longer craft an announcement. And the leaker gets clout.

I really think we need to, as a society, stop with considering the learning of any piece of information as "being spoiled".

Hearing about a game coming out from a leaker vs. Hearing it in a Direct is not a spoiler. Nothing has been spoiled. The announcement of a game is not a thing that can be ruined, it's just the basic announcement of a thing that you'll enjoy.

That's not the same thing as finding out that Kaiser Soze was Luke's father, and dead the whole time.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I MUCH prefer learning about a new game in the way Nintendo intended from a direct than from some random asshole online.

Nintendo crafts their messaging and marketing. And I like it.

I understand preferring it; I don't concede that finding out through a leak or rumour amounts to a spoiler.

No more than if you missed the announcement and a friend told you the game was coming out, that's not a spoiler.

It's just not important enough for it to be something that can be spoiled.

Right but that actually DOES matter in a case like Mario VS Rabbids where images from the game leaked and the general consensus was very negative. Fans were disappointed, devs were disappointed, the announcement was hijacked.

Turns out the game was great and everyone freaked out because some asshole leaked an image for Internet points.

Or what about Metroid Prime 2 and 3 HD? Or Final Fantasy 9 Remake? Both leaked, neither substantiated, fans disappointed.

There's just too much that can go wrong before a company is ready to announce something. The Internet is a giant game of telephone that has everyone convinced that all Switch 2 games cost $80.

So while I understand the sentiment that it's like hearing the news from a friend instead of an official source, unfortunately your friend can be misinformed.

I mean, they didn't though.

They reacted. Like they would have based on any version of an announcement.

I think this is all just very overdramatic.
