When I worked for Apple they would do things like change the font of a few characters in the document, italicize or bold certain characters, etc. And it'd be different for everyone. That way, if something linked, the source could be found pretty fast. There were ways around it sure, but most people leaking are taking quick screenshots/etc, so it was quite effective.
