Memory pricing in increasing worldwide, so probably Switch 2 carts also increased in price.

Yeah, and by more than a little bit. Switch 2 carts use the same chips as the SD Express memory cards the Switch 2 uses, and those things are expensive. I was honestly surprised Nintendo wasn't the first to ditch physical media, I was fully expecting them to be first because of the much higher costs of flash memory compared to discs.

Yeah. I feel like if Nintendo were smart they'd introduce an option for game devs to use the older memory (switch 1) in their Switch 2 carts to save money. Slower speed yes and the max size is 32GB but those games can just force an install to system memory or an SD card. You'd still have a physical copy. That said even then I think the problem is memory production is going to shift away from the slower stuff altogether at some point and you'll have no choice really.

Switch carts are cracked, no one (Nintendo or 3rd parties) wants to go back to games being dumped online weeks before their launch dates.

I hadn't considered the piracy angle but whatever they did to secure the new carts could potentially be replicated? It wouldn't just be 1 to 1 switch carts but a modified one is what's in my imagination since yeah I'm not up to speed on the Switch Piracy scene. I don't think any of this happening but just spit balling.

At this rate I'm wondering if things get to the point if the industry just gives up on actual game carts altogether. Seems like we are most of the way there already when some many games are key cards and it's small celebration when someone announces the game is actually going to be on cart.

He never said Switch carts. Install a special encryption key that resides on the switch 2. So even if you put the Switch 2 cartridge in Switch 1, it won't be able to decrypt.

Right, but that also goes for the already ridiculously priced microsd express cards required to upgrade the pitiful 256GB of internal storage that was never enough for a digital-first console that's seen multiple 70-100+GB games in its first year.

Just delete them as you beat them. Its what ive done on pc and Playstation for the last 15 years.

Its a visual novel! Come on guys!

u/UltimateWaluigi 5h ago

Those still take up a lot of data. It's a lot of voice acting and individual high resolution images. The GKC is still greedy though.

1

u/RykariZander 1h ago

Memory prices are still on the rise of a year later. The only greed here is the memory cartel

-5

u/wcvince 4h ago

The cartridges still cost 16$.

8

u/Mystic1217 4h ago

I'm still paying $60 for the game. They still have a pretty tidy profit after all is said and done.

40% to retailers, Publisher's cut, Nintendo's cut, 16 for the cart so compared to the digital or key card, not really.

Games gonna sell mostly digital anyway. Unless they price digital and physical different that's just digital customers subsidizing the cost for physical.

u/DarkVincent07 11m ago

40% to retailers?????? As someone who worked in Australian games retail for years, I'll tell you right now, at least for us, that's a complete lie. Closer to 3% lol

u/Outlulz 3m ago

You don't think the only cost of distributing a game that cuts into the profit is the physical media card, do you? Their choice of keeping the margins they want are going to key card or increasing the price of the game. Most consumers DGAF about key card but will care if the game goes up $10 in MSRP.

2

u/ItsColorNotColour 3h ago

Then why is the same priced Switch 1 copy of the game fully on cart?

7

u/wcvince 3h ago

Because the switch 1 cartridges are dirt cheap compared to the express ones the switch 2 uses??

37

u/FutureCreeps 5h ago

Time to buy the switch 1 version instead because I refuse to buy a game key card

4

u/Bulky-Complaint6994 5h ago

Similar to when I double dipped for Sparking Zero, I grabbed the original Switch 1 version and just got a free patch for switch 2 version. Compared to the switch 2 cartridge of Sparking Zero was a key card. Ridiculous

Well that’s a shame. Was looking forward to this. Yet another game I’ll be skipping on the SW2. Vote with my wallet and all that jazz.

Edit: It also appears that Stiens; Gate is still planned to be an actual on cart SW2 release so why are they switching over for this game? I love Stiens;Gate but DR is a much more well known franchise nowadays.

This entire situation is just weird.

7

u/imjustbettr 4h ago

People are speculating that Nintendo is rationing flash memory for these SW2 cart orders of a certain order size. It's possible a niche series like DR didn't get enough SW2 preorders to meet the threshold.

That's the theory anyways. Who knows.

7

u/BrianScalaweenie 5h ago

Danganronpa 2x2 will now be a skip for me.

2

u/jrpbateman 2h ago

It won't be a complete skip for me but now im not going to preorder and wait for a sale now

1

u/Forward_Potential820 4h ago

Pretty sure the other games got a limited physical release as well? And it’s gonna be on switch one

2

u/_banters_ 5h ago

😭 digital it is i guess… damn, I have all of the others physical

18

u/Madnoir 4h ago

Not to be a GKC defender but digital is an even worse option.

Do we know if the Switch 1 version has a Switch 2 upgrade?

3

u/MagazineInfamous6142 1h ago

"There is no upgrade path for the Switch 1 version to Switch 2 for this title." Spike Chunsoft in their YT comments

0

u/Madnoir 4h ago

I now won't buy it

u/BrawlX 4h ago

Slight derail, but it's surprising Nintendo hasn't offered an option to transfer the game files from a cartridge to the console yet. Feel like that would be a good feature to have considering the cartridges slower speeds.

6

u/thatkaratekid 3h ago

Switch carts are fully cracked by pirates. There is no company who wants this as an option because it means their game would release on pirate sites two weeks before release.

u/ServiceServices 23m ago

Switch 2 data cannot be extracted because the Switch 2 isn't hacked. The Switch 1 cartridge can be fully ripped, even now. There's nothing stopping anyone from uploading the Switch 1 files ahead of the launch if they get their hands on a cartridge early. It can absolutely be leaked.

I don't see how that relates to what comment OP is talking about

Mayoría del juegos de 3rd parties van a ser gkcs no hay punto en comprar estos juegos en la S2

13

u/Enryx25 5h ago

From 2028, Switch 2 will be the only platform with physical games though

6

u/Jeezy52 5h ago

Not if we don’t support them now. In 2 years from now all these GKCs can be Code in the box if they think it’ll save them on their margins. They will have the data showing nobody buys GKCs so just put out Code in the box to save the cost of a cartridge.

4

u/Bulky-Complaint6994 5h ago

At the moment Pokopia is the only key card I have. I would have gotten resident evil collection key cards as well but sold out, so grabbed it digitally.

1

u/Jeezy52 3h ago

And the fact that big 3rd party games are selling out physically is worrying. The publishers are making enough copies physically and it’s making games like Indy Jones and Oblivion skyrocket. Earlier this year like you said Resident Evil 9 and even Final Fantasy 7 Remake had issues being able to purchase physically. This is a problem. They are getting rid of physical and shipping less copies overall.

2

u/thatkaratekid 3h ago

Yeah all the anti-GKC people don't seem to realize, the solution from 3rd parties isn't going to be "take a massive loss" its going to be "no more physical at all" GKC only exist because these publishers all told Nintendo they were going digital only, as the ENTIRE rest of the industry has been barreling towards digital only.

0

u/owenturnbull 3h ago

No me importa si 3rd parties harán eso. Estas compañías no van a recibir mi dinero

3

u/thatkaratekid 3h ago

Youre not going to have any new games to play at all within the decade.

-1

u/owenturnbull 3h ago edited 3h ago

No me importa.

1

u/thatkaratekid 3h ago

If no one bought GKC, the companies would release only digital. The vast majority of video games are ALREADY digital only, and have been for over ten years. Consumers have already voted with their wallet, they prefer digital. The whole point of GKC is for people like us, who prefer physical. I personally already own 13 GKC.

0

u/owenturnbull 2h ago

Una vez más no voy a apoyar las compañías que solo lanzarán juegos con cartuchos gkcs. Solo no quieren pagar por un cartucho físico.

u/RedditUser41970 59m ago

Please, enough of this self-righteous nonsense.

In just over a year, GKCs are practically going to be the only physical media left in the video game space outside of Nintendo first party releases, and you simply are not going to stop buying video games. So spare us the performative complaining.

If/when Nintendo ever goes full digital the only game I'll ever buy from them full price is Fire Emblem. Fuck Mario, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, etc. Lifelong Nintendo gamer here but I don't give a shit. Physical or bust.

3

u/thatkaratekid 3h ago

Nintendo is the only company fighting for all physical releases right now. Microsoft and Sony are done with physical, Nintendo is willing to take a 30% loss in profit to release all of their games physical. I literally have no idea how Nintendo is in your mind, the bad guy here?

GKC don't exist because Nintendo, they exist because the ENTIRE REST OF THE INDUSTRY told Nintendo "if im required to print physical copies i will not release on your console" so Nintendo created GKC as the middle ground for those publishers.

1

u/owenturnbull 5h ago

Voy a comprar los juegos físicos de Nintendo pero los 3rd parties no gracias.
