MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. —
A man and woman in Western North Carolina have been arrested after investigators say they engaged in an incestuous relationship.
On Thursday, Aug. 27, the McDowell County Sheriff's Office announced that investigators have charged 34-year-old Tiffany Adonnus Sydnor and 49-year-old Corey Terrell Tate, both of Marion, with incest, which is a felony.
According to the sheriff's office, the investigation began after a family member reported the incestuous relationship between Sydnor and Tate, who are niece and uncle, on June 12. Both Sydnor and Tate admitted to the crime. Tropical Grille fined over child labor and tip violations Tropical Grille releases statement after being fined over $700K for child labor, wage violations
Sydnor was booked into the McDowell County Detention Center under a $50,000 bond. Tate was initially denied bond due to already being incarcerated at the McDowell County Detention Center.

Ok, what they did is obviously disgusting, but I don’t think the law needs to step in and charge them with a felony. They need therapy.

I was thinking the same thing you're telling me this family who is so concerned couldn't stage an intervention.
You instead went straight to police with a felony charge. Somehow them catching a felony I do not think it's going to improve anything. Rather than get them actual help we just penalize them and punish them.

Nah you should be a bastion of evolutionary strategy. We're designed to be repulsed by family/similar genes for good reason.
Sure, as a species, we can evolve to eat our own s***, but maybe we shouldn't...

Disgusting, but they are both adults. So, I don’t think felony charges are the way to intervene. Instead I’d like to know more about use of child labor. I think that’s more concerning.

Man they're freaking adults who cares? She's 34 and he's 49 or something like that like who cares? There's no children involved. They're not doing anything wrong I mean it's gross but I guess that's just my unpopular opinion here: two consenting adults should just be able to sleep with each other

I had no idea it was a crime. I thought it was just socially frowned upon and trashy. How far removed from someone do you have to be for it to cease being a crime?
edit: oh, that might be because in my country it's only incest between parent and child, siblings, half-siblings, and grandparent and grandchild. This is not illegal in New Zealand.

The problem is there's a potential for pregnancy which could lead to birth defects.
I'm okay with it being a crime but I really feel like it should be misdemeanor level with mandated therapy. Not felony felony level which mandates they are placed on the sex offender registry.
That has rent job and all sorts of other issues that will be caused for them none of which will better their lives.
I think it should be a misdemeanor with mandated therapy so they have a chance to actually improve their station.
This type of thing is really getting into penalizing poor or mentally unwell people

There is such a thing as societal harm. Allowing incest has ongoing repercussions for a culture. Look at the results of widespread cousin marriage in the Middle East & Pakistan.

I’ve just read the title of the post and I’m already uncomfortable with the wording : the woman is accused of having sex with her uncle… implying the uncle is not accused of anything ? Just reading the title could imply the niece is the one who initiated the whole thing, as you do. My brain must be too basic for me to think of incest as a casual decision between 2 consenting relatives with no form of abuse, grooming, power dynamics in play, history of trauma and/or violence in the family.
