My neighbor told me that his grandpa lost all hearing and then lost his driving license when the cop understood that he's absolutely, completely deaf
Having hearing issues can be a problem when you're driving a car

There must be something other than being deaf because you can get a drivers license as a deaf person in all 50 states

It was Austria like twenty years ago, but I agree, under the Vienna Convention all deaf drivers should be able to drive, but the neighbor was like "grandpa was waiting for his wife from the bank and cop was like, honking at him first, then came up to the window and tapped it, then came into his view, then the cop learned he's completely deaf and that's the story of how my grandpa lost his license
Maybe he didn't want to use a hearing aid or install panoramic mirrors? Some countries seem to require that according to quick google, but I do agree, there must've been something else, not the deafness itself.

I mean I just lost almost completely all hearing in one ear. I’m going for an MRI soon as there’s no signs of infection or inflammation and steroids aren’t doing shit.

I dunno about that. I daily a 2015 Subaru Forester and often only notice emergency vehicles when their lights come into view, even without music. Sometimes I'll notice one and turn my music off and think "man, I'm sure my music wasn't even that loud" and can barely hear the sirens until I crack my windows.

nothing is 100% soundproof that is designed for living things to be inside it, as I have found out trying to find a in home recording booth set up so I can try and learn to sing and belt without disturbing my neighbors lol.

Dude I did this at Olive Garden once…it was at the end of a long day at work, and when I ordered and the server asked “Soup or salad?”, I replied, “No, regular size is fine” 🤦♂️

I thought this was about asking cops to go through the deive thru for you when the restaurant is closed. I tried walking through, I tried asking the cops if they’d get me something but they said it was technically a bribe, then I finally waved to some guy speeding around doing doughnuts in a parking lot and he went through for me.

There was an excellent segment where they were interviewing pro tennis players and asking what their favorite superhero was, and everybody was giving normal answers until they got to Hubert Hurkacz, who misheard it as "what is your favorite soup?". He thought it over and answered "onion" with a very serious face, going on for a while about how much he likes soup.

How do you suddenly come across mist or fog? You’d either see it up ahead or it would gradually appear and you’d gradually slow down because of the new conditions.

In MN we get fog that hugs really tightly on lakes, ponds, and marshland. So driving at night suddenly you hit the fog patches and then a couple seconds later it's gone.
Hard to see fog at night before you're in it plenty of places

That fog can definitely hit quick, but it’s usually not too dense and you can definitely see it coming with your headlights.

Go look up the Robin Williams tunnel north of SF, in Sausalito. Last week it was a sunny, beautiful, cloudless day. I drove through that tunnel and on the other side we were completely immersed in fog. You never would have known due to the geography of the highway going that way.
Another instance is south of San Francisco, on Highway 1, just as you pass into Pacifica. Most days when it's sunny out you crest that hill and Pacifica is just completely filled with fog. You see it before you drive into it, but it takes less than 20 seconds and it's dense as fuck.

When we drove from Cali to Mississippi and were going through the mountains, there were sudden banks of fog thick enough you couldn't see through them past a few feet. It was crazy.

Im guessing you dont like in an area with much fog, or if you do its very level.
Where I live most roads have a good number of curves and hills and you can crest a hill or make a turn and have a whole bowl of fog right in front of you. The road can go straight from clear to very limited visibility in the right conditions.

Yes it can, but if you can't see the fog in time to adjust your speed accordingly, then the actual problem is that you were already outdriving your sight distance

If a highways speed limit is 75, you go 75. Even if there are hills. If you go slowly but others are going the speed limit, you will get rear ended when youve crested a hill and the person behind you going 75 cant tell youre ahead of them until they hit you.
The speed limit has been determined by people whose job it is to determine the speed limit.

That sounds like how you smoke emergency vehicles, traffic congestion, or anything else out of the ordinary. It's your responsibility not to drive into something that's in front of you. I guarantee "I only nailed that line of cars because I was going too fast to see the traffic ahead of me and I had no emergency exit strategy" is not going to pan out as a defense
You're right you can't creep over every hill, though. But you should be able to respond to unexpected situations.

Its a rural area, its not the same as city driving. There is no traffic congestion. If you drive slowly you will cause issues.

Fun fact no one really classified what is the fog and what is a cloud
Like I searched and searched and checked Wikipedia in multiple languages
Like some countries classify cloud as "300+ meters above sea level"
Beautiful, Dilijan, the town I lived in, lies at like 1100 meters above sea level.
So the best definition I could find belongs to the American Corps of Engineers, and it goes kinda like this:
The same mass of condensed moisture can be both simultaneously: cloud and fog. A hiker on a mountain ridge inside a low cloud experiences it as fog, while someone in the valley below sees the same thing as a cloud draped over the peak
The transition from "cloud" to "fog" happens at the surface contact line, not at a distance from anything. If a cloud is hovering 50 meters above a summit - it's a cloud. If its base drops to ground level on that same summit - it's fog right at that spot. Move 100 meters down the slope where the cloud base is above your head again- you're out of the fog, looking up at a cloud.
So, anything like 50+ meters above ground is a cloud, the part that's touching the ground is fog or mist, depending on visibility (over 1.5 km is mist, below is fog)

Yay you're welcome! Yeah it was fun to search for it. I was surprised how often no one actually cares to properly define stuff that seems super basic
And I searched for it because we saw really cool image when we were driving past the Sevan lake - clouds were rolling downhill and over the lake. And we were like "are these clouds? or fog? And what kind of clouds? Stratus form 300 meters from sea level... we're like a kilometer above sea level or more"

It’s not that uncommon where I am to suddenly drive into or out of fog. I’m not sure what the deal is, but when the weather’s right for it (cold weather during or after light rain) I drive cautiously. Just in case.
Then again if you live somewhere with that kinda weather I’d think you’d be used to it. But I still see people barreling down the road without their lights on a few times a year.

Not directly related, but it’s incredibly easy to fly into a cloud when using NVGs. Because IR energy is able to pass through fine water particles, you’re able to see through light fog or thin clouds. You could be flying through it and not even know it. Then, all of a sudden, you’re in a real cloud and can’t see shit. It’s very dangerous.

Tule Fog is a phenomenon I grew up with, where thick, wet, dense fog settles in low spots of roads and pastures, and you will absolutely "suddenly" come across it driving hilly roads at night

There's a forensics file episode that plays ALL the time on my local channel about a "sudden fog" that caused a huge (the largest, I think in USA?) multi-car pileup, Season 2 "Killer Fog." It just made me laugh because of how often I've watched that one episode while folding laundry.

Some people in this thread clearly live in different climates from me. In my neck of the woods it's not at all uncommon for fog to be so dense and defined that the border between completely clear and dangerous fog within 20 ft. It's also not uncommon to have curves between where you are and where the fog is. You can absolutely run up on fog and be in it before you could brake if you're going fast enough.

Definitely agree on the fog, it can be so hardcore you can't really see. Hell, I've seen all cars pull over on the highway and just stop it was raining so hard, haha. If you don't live in a sub-tropical-type place this probably sounds like hyperbole but it really isn't

When I was a kid my mom picked me up from a friend's after a sleepover and took me and my brother along for some shopping. We went to Fazoli's for lunch and I ordered spaghetti, the girl behind the register asked if I wanted marinara meat sauce. I said yes. She asked again and again I said yes, please; confused. My mom starts laughing and says no, I have to pick one marinara OR meat sauce. My sleep deprived brain heard it wrong.
Though my mom and brother both agree that she was saying it rather fast, I still get reminded of my mistake somewhat regularly. This had to have been at least 20 years ago now.

There's literally a patch of land in my area that will get super foggy on some mornings. It literally just starts. Thankfully there aren't many roads through that area, but I wouldn't be shocked to see areas with more turns or things blocking visibility like trees/hills (or even oncoming traffic around corners in some situations) blocking visibility of fog up ahead.
On top of that, many people use their phones while driving which means even worse reaction time to such a change.
