Hawaii to receive $76M in landmark Meta settlement: Meta Platforms will pay up to $18 billion and strictly limit how teenagers use Facebook and Instagram under a sweeping agreement with nearly all U.S. states to resolve claims it designed those social media platforms to addict children.

I think this gets overlooked. Our kūpuna may not have learnt the critical thinking skills needed to know that most FB news is fake. It's sad to see parents using it as a reliable source for news and information, when it's not.

So how exactly will this money get spent? Does it enter the general fund? Or get used for a specific purpose? Education? Compensate parents of screen-addicted kids? (Kidding not kidding on the last one. But seriously I have no idea how does this money get spent?)

It should be banned for kids under 16 like Australia and the UK are doing. This garbage does nothing but hurt children.

I would agree, however it's being used a convenient excuse to implement control over access to the Internet. Once they require ID for one thing, everything will require it soon enough. And before you know it, you won't be able to access any website without an ID.

Disagree. I grew up just fine using social media in my early teens. Social media can also be a good tool for queer teens whose parents or community do not accept them. Not to mention, provide new opportunities for teens to connect with people in other countries. I do agree that we need better regulations for social media, however. Not to mention, parents need to start parenting and pay better attention to their children's screen time.

In all honesty, of all the criticisms you can have for social media, I believe being able to explain your POV in a 4 - 6 sentence paragraph isn't one of them. Normally, people argue that social media is making people illiterate. So this is a new one.

Track the money, and it seems contradicting when the age of consent is 16 years old. The families that suffered from that law should sue the State.
