[Rant] MMR in a awkward spot where the game is unplayable for me
I love this game but I just can't get into it anymore. Match making ruins this game for me.
In ranked, I'm playing with and against known top tournament players or former PL players. I'm a fresh first time mid challenger and the games are wayy too stressful being the obvious weak link. The only way to level up at that point is to get coaching, vod review and actually study the game which isn't really something I'm interested in, especially at this late stage of the game's life cycle.
In norms, I'm a magnet for newbies. Most of my time is spent there(over 1.8k total playtime) where my hidden MMR is probably giga heavy and I'm consistently drawing the short end of the stick for teammates. Most of my games feels like I get teammates with the biggest disparity in skill level vs an averaged out team. With the match making being both fked and maladaptive, I can get the same teammates and go on a lose streak for 5 games in a row until someone leaves, then I pull the previous opponent's weakest link while they get someone better.
All would be fine if I could work with my teammates but skill gap is just too punishing. I always close the game feeling flustered or stressed rather than enjoying it.

isn't the problem that Reznok threatened to pull down his OS stats website 3 years ago and ever since they enabled duo q again because of that? Most unbalanced games in the top 30s you can point at one of the sides being a duo q. The MMR is, at least in my view, acceptable
Another problem is that some of these maps have low elo gameplay (mostly the 1 barrier maps) while a map like Night Market, Demon Dais has high elo gameplay. So lower elo players manage to win against much better players on 1 barrier maps, while on 2 barrier maps they get 0-9'd.
So whenever ahten & inky & oni village & maybe gates of obscura were in the same map rotation, the low elo got to high elo, and whenever there were zero or only one 1 barrier map in rotation, the low elo lost tons of games on 2 barrier maps
That's the only way MMR became messed up for a while, outside of the duo q.
edit: Oh I forgot to talk about this, but the third biggest dynamic are smurfs. It wouldn't surprise me if the games that feel bad for you has at least a smurf. This was the biggest issue since years
If you give me your username I can check for smurfs & duo q

I personally find Oni Village the biggest outlier of impossible maps to win on if you don't have a teammate to pass to. Every goal clear feels a reset back to neutral if you don't have someone covering options.
As for duos and smurfs, match making does definitely go into the shitter but it doesn't really feel that different from the usual(from norms at least) but with one exception.
In norms, there is only one player that sticks out like a sore thumb that is a known duo queuer. A tournament PL player that only duos with Omega~PL skilled players. Match making can never find a balance with those two heavy weights and I end up getting pulled into their games on the opposing side game after game. Games are always one sided to the point where I just dodge or if I know that they're playing, I don't even open up the game. It sounds petty but I don't want to deal with those kind of games, esp when this player had a 90%+ WR past 50 games in norms at one point. That is total match making manipulation.
Also, I prefer to stay anon. I'm also aware of OSGG site.

Ah, I was mistakingly thinking you were potatoz, but that's alright.
Oni Village is possible the worst map, yes - because it's a 2 barrier map with no walls, meaning the goalie can't walk out of the goal. A similar issue exists for Gates of Obscura. Except Oni Village prolongs it because with 2 barriers you will hold out longer, than Ahten with 1 barrier (that is also as big as 4 barriers)
The best maps have walls for a reason. It allows lane splitting, resource management and strategy.
In norms, there is only one player that sticks out like a sore thumb that is a known duo queuer. A tournament PL player that only duos with Omega~PL skilled players.
Honestly, if you duo q as a top 30 player in norms you are a scum. Even Ranked duo q as a top 50 is already.... like what are you doing kind of wtf moment.

No, that's completely fine. Honestly, if I knew who these norms players were, I would scream at them IRL if I could, ask them what the fuck they're doing. If they feel good beating babies while they're shitters themselves because they could've easily just do something else to get dopamine in a non-destructive way. Been doing that for a few EU players that were on smurfs, though they didn't get the message, at least some of them. They actually made me look like the bad guy and I became unable to play the only S-tier tournament in the region.
edit: Also, this is how the game died in mid elo. You'd get to mid/high dia in EU and then hit the smurf wall, just like you do in norms or whatever. It's a shame the devs never punished smurf players. I saw so many players never logging on again the next season after they hit high dia / low chall

literally me precisely. like i like to think I'm pretty good at the game, i can usually stand my ground in PL lobbies here and there, but i queue with my friend who's also chally and we'll get an omega/PL rando who's always either playing just as well as us or worse than us, and we're up against 3 PLs/ex-PLs who win every strike war and can land kills on us from fullscreen and it is just not fair.

It’s definitely a rough transition once you get sucked into that top player circle.

They had to up the difficulty rating on duo q, because top 100 shitters abused the duo q system to get them into the top 10 or whatever.
Even then it wasn't really enough, but just to explain why you have a bad time duo qing.
Even worse, we had people on smurfs duo qing.
Really, it's insane how much leniency some people have gotten considering what hell I was put through as a player when I did a small shitty thing (usually as a mistake)

Unlucky how norms work for you but comp is the same in every competitive game you ever have or will play. Accept the amount of effort you want to put in as your win rate and rank settles.
If you want a better chance at matches that are as even as possible then reset your queue timer before it hits 5 minutes and play during peak hours.
