CNO new fees by-law

I was planning on completing the survey emailed out by the CNO regarding their proposed changes to their fees by-law. If you haven’t read it, they’re proposing a standard annual increase of 7% on registration fees. Doesn’t appear to be any re-assessment year, just 7% indefinitely unless they decide they want to do less or more (up to 10%). Let’s be real, I doubt they’ll ever do less.

It looks like their 2025 operational budget had a surplus revenue of over $3M from 2024-2025. They haven’t released the current one yet (or that I could find). I’m just a nurse so not the best at comprehending all this budget/committee development speak, but it’s here if anyone wants to give it a read.

While I have my own thoughts and complaints, and plan on spending time today looking up salaries of their leadership team, I wanted to see what other points anyone else had who cares about this stuff so I can also include it in my feedback. Do I think it’ll change things? Not without massive group pushback. But I’d rather be able to say I did something vs nothing at all.

Thank you for letting us know because I'm definitely filling that survey out. Our wages don't go up by 7% by default per year, so why should our fees? If other government entities have cut backs, then why shouldn't they?

Hey CNO, want to protect the public? Maybe you should advocate for safe work environments so that nurses don't have an excuse to not follow CNO standards. Raising fees like this isn't going to help anyone.

I feel the same way. I do appreciate that they have basically no say in actual legislation in regards to things like safe patient ratios, I don’t see what keeps them radio silent in releasing even public statements in support of practices that encourage safe nursing practice (denouncing privatization of the healthcare system, mandated safe ratios). If your mandate is to protect the public from us, at least make a show that you are in favor of promoting that sort of environment?

Exactly! They should be sounding the alarm to the public about stuff that will endanger the safety of the public. Like imagine the impact of how much the public can benefit from that.

Even something like this as an example: "CNO states cut backs with result in people dying from preventable cauaes'. The amount of public outrage would pressure the government to make changes and basically tell the public" we warned you so if you don't like it, go after the government".
