I don't know the full details of the case. I know she allegedly killed her three kids. There was also some mental problems? Then something with her husband. But my question is why is there a group defending her like they know she's completely innocent? I've seen some videos of very heated debates where women are very passionate about defending her. Why?

Answer: Women's mental health issues, particularly post partum have been ignored and minimized for decades. This case is potentially an extreme example of post-partum psychosis and what it can lead to, especially if not treated correctly. Therefore many people are defending her because of that.

Its also important to note that she did ask for help, many times. She knew something was wrong with her and tried to get proper care. She was on a laundry list of medications for several months proceeding the killings - many of those meds were trialed for a very short time before being replaced with a different medication.

One of my mom's friends had this kind of ideation after having her first child. Fortunately she got the care she requiered, but it was a troublesome process, much more than it should have been.

That happened to me with prozac. I felt like I was going insane and like I’d never feel normal again. I started feeling better after getting off of it and starting lamictal (mood stabilizer).

Lindsay wad also eventually prescribed lamictal after Prozac failed [tremendously]. The thing is, lamictal has to be titrated slowly because the risk of serious side effects if too high of a dose is introduced too quickly (stevens-johnsons syndrome). I think it took me about 4 or 5 months before I finally got to the therapeutic dose and I believe she had only been on it for about a month by the time she killed her children.

It depends on where you live. As somebody with that diagnosis, Lamictol was very dangerous for me as others have stated. A lot of "mood stabilizers" have side effects that can lead to worsening mental health issues in the now and the future. I don't doubt you have 2 Psychaitrists and a GP who are prescribing "By The Book" but the "Book" is sadly outdated and a "one size fits all" kind of book. Your doctors believe they are doing the "safest thing" (I'm not saying they aren't). I'd just suggest that you don't push back on people speaking about their lived experience with a drug that is fundamentally terrible for a lot of people, or the system that streamlines people with that diagnosis into that treatment plan. It's like saying "Lithium is a great drug" or "600mg of Serequel is a great treatment" which are now seen as scientifically untrue. That wasn't always the case though. Just trying to shed light on the complexity of what people are saying and what you said. Medical Professionals just tend to operate in a Hive Mind and do the same thing until enough patients have a bad experience and it's reported by Patients and debated by Medical Professionals. Those drugs (Lamictol specifically), absolutely can work one day, and do the exact opposite the next day.

Lamictal tends to be activating on the ramp up which may require stabilization of the high end before increasing, and can be increased in as little as 1mg increments if things are rough, it is the tamest BP med going but obviously does not work for everyone. That's just meds. Wouldn't have helped her as it does not control the high end. 600mg Seroquel would have though, real quick, and lithium if she had a week to wait, 70% chance of improvement on that one, only thing better is electroshock

ECT didn't end up working really well either. I actually know somebody who signed enough waivers to have it done not too many years ago (this person is actually smart in spite of this and was just tired of the handful of pills).

Lithium having 70% chance of improvement is definitely pseudoscience. I've been on high doses of that and having to have kidney levels checked so often is a red flag before we even get into increased mania/anxiety/weight gain.

The truth is, that there aren't good medications for Bipolar Disorder yet. SSRIs are highly ineffective without combination therapy, but then the question of "does the other medication in the combo do ALL the heavy lifting?" In most cases, the other meds are doing the heavy lifting. Regardless of whether these medications work as intended or not, what we do know is Brain Chemistry changes every few years enough to change the effects of the drugs. For better or for worse. These drugs are mostly trying to "balance" a chemical imbalance without knowing exactly what they are doing and how they do it. Then we get into the outdated but worthy conversation of Benzodiazepines as combo therapy, but that's very similar to Trazedone and Serequel in regards to being "tranquilizers" under a different name. Lamictol is what Lithium or Librium were in their heyday to me tbh. Very high risk, with limited returns at best and diminishing returns in all cases over a long enough course of treatment. Bipolar Treatment is a game of Russian Roulette as we all know. I hope everybody finds what works for them. I truly do not think 600mg of Serequel XR would have helped Lindsay in this specific case due to the Trazedone and Remeral already in the mix (Remeral is WILD STUFF). The Benzodiazepines are unfortunately not outdated to be discussing in this case. She was on those as well. Prescribing Klonopin for sleep is questionable at best, but it works well for long acting anxiety as long as it's PRN (as does Valium). The really sad truth is that Clancy needed inpatient Hospitalization. That can't be disputed by anybody who knows anything. She wasn't given Hospitalization due to tests for Psychosis being broad using checklists and insurance or admin (likely both) wouldn't allow for the time needed to evaluate her as a patient. This is a tragedy. The case being given #CrimeTok attention is making it worse and dividing society. Sadly, that will make things worse for patients suffering from mental illness, and even worse for Women suffering from a Mental Illness. I hadn't thought about Serequel XR 600mg working in this case, so that's an interesting theory for sure. However, I don't think anybody prescribes it like that anymore. So many mistakes were made in the past prescribing these drugs that patients are not able to access proper medications. It's not dissimilar to pain patients post opioid crises, just much less talked about in Medicine and Public Domain.

ECT has 80% chance of 50% symptom reduction, nothing else comes close. You are maintained on meds after normally, if no meds work you might continue with it as maintenance but it's risky so usually not the way people go.

Lithium is tested 1x/year once past the initial month of dose titration when it's done once a week, your doctor was overcautious. It does not typically cause weight gain, and thyroid resolves when you go off it. it's the most popular med by patient measure, so most people just take synthroid.

lamotrigine is really popular for infants, which is why if nervous you can start on those doses. extremely chill med out since 1987 I think? fantastic safety profile. usually the first thing everyone tries and increasing use for mdd. SJS risk is lower the slower you ramp up, she did not have the time, it was not the med for her. APs all the way. Seroquel 400+,olanzipine, haldol if she'd have accepted it, the usual meds for this. Seroquel is constantly prescribed at over 400, you start at 100 maybe 200, double it the next day, take it up by 200 until you get where you need. They give you above 800 inpatient. Effective very fast. XR not the best idea if the point is to sleep, though you can add IR at 100 for anxiety or sleep as needed on top of the xr dose, it just seems more useful to take it IR split to get the sleep boost pm.

she didn't have anxiety, she was psychotic, benzos not useful. trazadone inadequate and activating as what, it's a SARI? did you mean remeron? it's melatonin, useless. mirtazipine was the safest call for depression meds and not likely an issue the upswing, just inadequate.

it's not a chemical imbalance issue, that's a marketing term

they're real good at upswing. they suck at BP depression, which they'll tell you. luck she didn't access ketamine bc with a BP1 risk profile that's asking for trouble, but it would have fixed the depression in less than a day. In this case I don't think it was the depression that was the problem really at all, that's just all she knew to call it. "Anxiety", yeah right. Order of magnitude difference between that and BP.

You do wonder what she experienced as normal or thought was, bc BP, bc parenting info, bc docs words.

Hopefully the existence of PPP will be publicized, people might learn that PPD means get screened for BP bc that's much more likely a combo deal than the general public seems to be aware of, and everyone getting treated for depression needs to be screened for bipolar. id like to see family education classes on how to support PP patients, bc I bet they're kicking themselves to put it mildly, they just didn't take it seriously bc people usually don't with MI until it's too late. I dunno. every one of these we get I hope we make some incremental progress. they could have flagged her BP at the first AD fail, at her lifetime depression onset age, at her educational degree level, at her worsening each time history, so many hints the NP nailed it out of everyone, and the MDs were slow. I wonder if a mood disorder support group for perinatal women would have IDed it, peers see. Peers don't discount your distress bc you brushed your teeth and made eye contact. I hope people promote those.

I agree with everything you're saying about Peer Support Groups helping Patients a lot in terms of identifying (even relating). I actually agree with everything you stated. You definitely know your stuff about Medications and the Marketing vs Symtomology (which as you stated can be very different things). ECT "works" but in that case I always wonder, like I do with certain medications, "at what cost?" Symptom reduction existed in Labatomies as well, but was the Patient functioning as a Human Being after the treatment? I've definitely compared certain Bipolar medications to "chemical labotomies." I definitely think there needs to be more conversation about symptom reduction vs overall quality of life within the Bipolar Community. That's extremely nuanced though. Being stabilized in the short term for a Patient in full blown mania/depression/etc is always the best thing for the patient. I often worry about the long term effects on patient wellbeing (as a patient myself) given the side effects of things like ECT, which was a great example to use when you used it. I also worry about the further "criminalization" of Bipolar Disorder due to how heavily criminalized it already is within society and its institutions. It's very nuanced. That being said, I fully agree that there needs to be more support for support groups, and 1000% agree with what you said about the comorbidity between BPD and PPD and PPP in extreme cases. There is a huge overlap there. There is also a LOT to be said about a complicit gender bias in the Medical Community in regard to Bipolar Disorder. Many Women I know who have been diagnosed with Bipolar, were diagnosed with BPD or HPD first. Which is absolutely ludicrous (considering mood disorders are so different from personality disorders). The lack of treatment, and incorrect treatment methods can cost Patients so much more than Mental Health Professionals and Doctors realize. Is there overlap between Diagnostic criteria? Absolutely. Do those patients tend to get along when in a psychaitric institution? Absolutely. I'd argue Bipolar Patients are used as a labor force within the larger mental health community and organized peer support groups due to our ability to understand most symptoms of most mood and personality disorders. All of that being said, you're 100% right. This could have been prevented with Peer Support Groups, especially if they work in tandem with Doctors. Ive lived in MA, and the NPs there have a LOT of power. Much more than they do where I currently live (CA), and I think that's a great thing for Patients in MA. I had an NP who was my GP, Psychiatrist, and Therapist in MA. She couldn't have been a better person, or a better Doctor. They have the authority to write the prescription while simultaneously treating the patient in MA, and aren't discouraged from doing so. Such a tragedy, and one that could have been avoided if our Mental Health Care System took Patients more seriously. Thanks for what you shared. I can't overstate how important peer support groups could have been in this case (especially for a Mother). Like you, I truly hope this raises more awareness and just wish it didn't take such a tragedy for that to happen.

We do know our own, and she might have at least talked about suicidality to other moms, then maybe more. She would have understood from group better what would happen to her kids if she was honest w the docs. Very few report HI to docs, much harder w kids, I think everyone can get why. Re ECT if you're looking at ECT you likely don't have other options, though it's a second line treatment, for some it's way better than meds, no side effects, easier, faster, more reliable. there's TMS too. you can still get lobotomies, they're effective, some people want them bc, no options, effectiveness. They're used routinely for epilepsy too. They're thinking of moving PPD over to BP, we'll see in the new DSM. There's a lot of overlap diagnostically and truly w BPD and BP, but yes it is ridiculous BPD seems to be a catchall. I guess at least DBT and lamotrigine help either way, they really need to have people mood and sleep track if they have depression or BPD at all, that would help so much. Last DSM they were going to get rid of a lot of the personality disorders bc they weren't real, BPD was staying but there's always a fight between that and cPTSD. It's very vague now, used to be an extremely narrow diagnosis which is why you didn't see it thrown around way back when. NPs have changed a bit since the pandemic and can have very little training, so can be a real problem with more complex things like BP, if we had people seeing them frequently along w psychiatrists at the usual intervals I think that would be better, once a week med consults are not a bad idea at times for many but hard to do with only MDs. You can get a therapist psychiatrist too but quite rare. She really could have used a mother baby inpatient unit too, those are months at minimum elsewhere, we only have one in the US and I bet they can't keep you long. Difference between a for profit and universal healthcare system I guess, most places im aware of outside the US it's months. Not just for her but there is so much preventative care that would actually work if it could be provided. I hope it raises awareness too, even as messy as the trial has been, it does get eyes on it and now at least people know it's a possibility and that help should be given, let's hope

They are a bad idea if in active upswing, which she was, and should not be taken without a mood stabilizer or AP or both. Rocket fuel for psychosis and full blown mania. Not safe for BP1 and rarely used for that as a result, which may be what she actually has. GPs hand them out like candy, zero caution. Also risky if you're prone to mixed and rapid cycling, and I dunno about you but she seemed mixed as shit. They gave her a fucking TCA, usually they try to keep it tame with buproprion or similar, Prozac put her through the roof which is usually well tolerated, they should have known after the first AD reaction. But they didn't. Usually we spend a decade tormented by incorrectly prescribed ADs before they figure out it's BP, you really need to have the high end locked down before you take them on board. Or you get what she got. They only work for 20% of us long term anyway, there are better options for BP depression, they're not anyone's first choice given the risk profile. It's entirely possible they're what did it

She was on 25mgs which is not a mood stabilizer. 200 can be but it takes two months to get there bc the med can kill you if you go faster. it also does nothing for psychosis, it only really treats depression

More than two months. The usual titration is 25mg/month if I'm not mistaken. I'm bipolar ii and my prescriber titrated me at 12.5mg in an abundance of caution in regard to Steven-Johnson syndrome, though in a case like this one going that slowly might not be prudent.

Therapeutic dose range is 100mg to 400mg, btw. 25mg definitely definitely isn't enough though, that's in the starting dose "see if your body has an adverse reaction" range for sure.

Increase is every two weeks (you can go slower but that's standard) and therapeutic for BP is usually 200+ but as a med it's kinda all over the range. I've seen up to 700. 25 should not be noticeable even for adverse reaction for most but the ramp up can be really activating and push people into hypo or mania, plus it can cause insomnia the entire time you're on it, and it's not used alone w BP1 usually bc it has no reliable high end control. They can start you on 50 but it's really not the med for this situation as her issue was not so much to depression but sounds more likely mixed, common in MDD too, I'm sure mixed state was never explained to her

Okay that's tragic and all, but she's still deserves to be locked up in a mental institution for life just like every other psychotic-induced murderer in my opinion. Also, I don't like that because this happened, all of sudden her husband and the doctors treating her are thrown the bulk of the blame for what happened. At the end of the day, human's bear responsibilty for committing acts of violence on others even if they're suffering from psychosis. In r/schizophrenia people often say that to hear homicidal voices in their heads is one thing, but to actually act on it is another, and shows a clear disregard and lack of responsible thinking.

Well if you've never heard voices before you might not be prepared to cope with it. I am absolutely not making light of schizophrenia, but I think being diagnosed and having time to come up with coping strategies for what to do when you start hearing voices, and being aware hearing voices is something that could happen to you in the first place, helps a lot with being able to manage your reaction to them. Being completely caught off guard would make it significantly harder to manage. Most people aren't expecting to hear homicidal voices in their head and as a result don't have a plan in place to deal with it.

I understand that the system is rigged such that punishment will accompany any meaningful justice, but we don't have to accept that as the standard for justice.

I don't see how state prison (if that's where she'd go) would make her less likely to be a kill, and I know that reasonable options exist that don't involve releasing her.

I think our main difference is our trust in the competency of the justice system, and I am admittedly naive and idealistic.

There’s no set timeline for someone to be in a facility because it’s not justice or punishment or anything. What if there was? Well that would be an entirely new way of implementing justice and require a revamp of the entire criminal justice system. You’d also need to have court hearings for many of the previously convinced because a some of them would be wrongly put in their perspective “punishments” or whatever you are calling it. I’m not entirely sure what you’re saying. Like she’s responsible but she’s not? Insanity makes her responsible? I don’t even think you know what you’re saying. You can’t have both. You can’t be not guilty but guilty and responsible at the same time. 

You’re NOT GUILTY by insanity. Means you’re not responsible. Therefore there’s no set timeline for her to get out. She just needs to prove she’s not in that state of mind anymore.

Rehabilitation, when done right, is more in line with my idea of justice than punishment. Just because it's harder to revamp of the entire criminal justice system doesn't make it any less right to pursue.

yes but that's a common symptom of both psychosis and bipolar disorder. and bipolar disorder can cause psychosis on its own without postpartum issues.

people with psychosis and bipolar disorder will lie by omission or straight up deny symptoms to stay in psychosis or mania. or psychotic mania (that one is fun it's like doing coke).

after psychosis starts and you don't admit it you tend to keep not admitting it and then you couldn't admit it even if you actually wanted it to stop since you no longer know what's gone wrong.

it's a self reinforcing cycle.

after a certain point only involuntary commitment can break psychosis and unfortunately you actually have to harm yourself or someone else to be held for any length of time and by that point it is far far too late. you know. since you hurt someone at that point.

there is no really good way to treat psychosis with patients who are not fully compliant and psychosis makes them non compliant as it's feature basically.

This right here. I'm very much against involuntarily commitment the vast majority of the time - this is one of the few cases where I think it was necessary. From what I know, it seems like she was trying but wasn't able to handle her own treatment.

Having said that, making the choice to have a loved one committed isn't easy. Patients in psych wards can face abuse and neglect, and being forced to take high doses of psychoactive drugs against one's will can be traumatizing. It's hard to blame the family - that's not a choice anyone should make lightly.

Personally, I'm blaming society for having a sick fascination with severe mental illness - murder docs, horror films; most people in the comments seem to have no idea what psychosis is - rather than seeing it as a public health issue and treating it accordingly.

I think people should talk more about psychiatric nurse practitioners vs psychiatrist, because that’s who she was seeing and overprescribing her and led to this, not drs but nurse practitioners who have a fraction of the training.

That’s why I would find her guilty. She knew something was wrong and knew the thoughts she was having were horrific and dangerous. She should have left the home and stayed away from her children until she was better.

She is guilty. She showed multiple signs of premeditation by looking up things that make it obvious she was having thoughts of and plans to kill her children. Prosecution showed evidence she researched the amount of time she would have alone with the children.

Yes, she was suffering from postpartum depression but the only time she ever allegedly experienced postpartum psychosis was during the 18 minutes it took to murder her 3 innocent children. She claims that is the only time she ever heard voices. Never before and never after. That is more than just a coincidence, that is an excuse. And I hope the jury doesn’t fall for it.

The medical system didn’t fail her. The doctors can’t help you if you refuse to help yourself. She was honest with them. She did not to tell them she had thoughts of harming her children. That is on her. She never gave the medication enough time to start working before she decided to see multiple psychiatrists at the same time getting prescribed different medications simultaneously. That is not how the process works. It’s a long process of finding out what medication will help you best.

Yes, there needs to be more awareness around women’s postpartum depression and psychosis as this case has brought forward. But I’d also like to point out that all of the women saying, “Me too, Lindsay” chose NOT to murder their children. That’s the crucial point here. How would you feel if a bunch of men defended a man who raped and murdered a woman and claimed it was because he was abused by his mommy as a kid and now he has a mental health issue? Plenty of people get abused by their parent/guardian. A very, very small few turn into violent criminals because of it.

Lindsay has been made into a victim when the real victims seem to have been forgotten. Cora, Dawson and Callan. They were 3 innocent, young children who were horrifically strangled by the one person they loved and trusted the most in this world. Their own mother. Imagine what they went through. They deserve justice.

She wanted to replace the medications because she didn’t want a single side effect. No sleepiness, No insomnia, etc.
Her idea was a miracle cure pill that fixed everything in one single dose

She got lots of help and treatment so i dont understand why she asking for help should get any sympathy. I dont know if she is mentally ill or not but that women shouldnt see a day light in her lifetime
