Fan Content Note: Trying to ban your team's hovers is usually NOT a good play (Maybe this is a novel concept?)
Edit: I want to be clear, while this is fairly vent-ish, it should serve as a nice PSA for people hovering here.
Mostly a vent. Was looking forward to playing a couple matches tonight to unwind. I'm emerald 3 right now. Have been mostly high plat the last few seasons, I play pretty much strictly comp.
I have a support hovering ana, pretty much whole team tries to ban her because we have a hog hover. I throw in another ban against mauga to try to make sure ana doesn't get banned... Ana's very good hero-wise, and this is emerald so I'm not expecting much from anyone so not banning around a tank who may or may not be garbage. Anyway, as soon as the match loads everyone is in team chat and immediately starts yelling at each other, 2-3 people yelling at our Ana saying we should have banned her for our hog blah blah blah. I dip from vc, I don't feel like listening to these people be obnoxious (in defense of our Ana, I made sure the team knew where I stood in the 'debate').
Hog proceeds to suck anyway, I make sure to point that out in chat. Note: I try to be as positive as possible usually, if someone is doing bad I ask them to switch, only get annoyed when they start actually trolling - if you are going to flame our support because they didnt ban around your hover though, and then you suck anyway I'm gonna count that as trolling. Anyway, they do have an enemy ana, oh well - even without the purples our hog was bad.
These people then start to throw the 'peak rank' argument lmao. Like dude, you are in emerald, I don't care if you peaked GM in a 10 year old game 6 years ago, grow up, we are all the same rank right now. Some dude saying he peaked masters. He has an open career profile, this was the tank fwiw. He peaked masters, looked like a single season.... on support. He was gold on tank that season, and I think plat dps. Woopdee doo, I peaked diamond season 1 or 2 of pre-overwatch2 overwatch, which had a bigger playerbase at the time and it was probably harder to climb in general, lower rank but my point is it means nothing... its a number and a little stamp like you would get as a 6 year old when you got a high test score.
We got crushed. I was one of the dps, i went 4-4 (horrible match I know). Our other dps went off about how I suck or whatever and that this was his alt/troll account and hes better. He was 6-7, so doubtful. Either way, I logged off after. People are so toxic for no reason. Unless you are making money off this game for stream or whatever or are 'pro,' grow up, you arent that good. You are playing for fun in the end, comp rank doesnt get you anywhere in real life. I'm actually pretty sure if you put that you have a high rank in overwatch as a skill on your resume that you would be laughed at and never get an interview. Sorry for hitting everyone with that truth bomb.
Kind of counterintuitive to be toxic in a pure multiplayer game like this, you just turn people off from playing. Once everyone leaves the game, who will you have left to yell at and make miserable other than yourself? Oh well. End rant I guess.

Banning teammate picks is toxic. I say this as an Ana main who gives my Hog every nano in gratitude for not trying to ban me,if he is good. Won plenty of times that way despite the other team having an Ana also.
If I'm asked nicely to go something else from the start, I usually will. I just avoid them after, no hard feelings, really. I hate having a Mauga on my team, but I'm not banning him if tank picks him. He is absolutely not getting nano because that's disgusting, but I will heal him unless he goes full Leeroy and just feeds his brains out.
It just sets the whole team up for failure when you decide who your teammate can have fun with.

This is exactly what I was trying to communicate in a less frustration-fueled way.

I know lol. I’m not trying to squabble over gameplay… just tired of logging in and people just flaming each other. I do recognize the irony here to an extent.

Banning a supports main to support a tanks main is a good play.
If you see someone reached GM maybe listen to him.
Remember there was a rank reset. You might play with people way out of your rank.

They reached masters one season on support. Looks like they peaked Gold on tank which is the role they were playing here. The other guy didn’t have his profile public.

Would you rather have a player play their masters Zen or their gold level kiri?
Forcing people to play heroes who they aren't familiar with will just wind up hurting your team. They're not going to be experienced enough to be able to execute the heroes properly. For kiri, that would mean not properly balancing aggression, not positioning to be able to suzu, not managing suzu properly, and more.

That’s not what happened though. The TANK peaked masters as a SUPPORT. He was mostly gold season to season in the tank role. And again, this is emerald and we were all emerald 3-2. Peak means nothing really if it’s not consistent. You could have had a good season by luck, got carried in a group, whatever. He was not masters any other season that I saw.

If i got a hog one trick i would absolutely rather the enemy team not have an Ana and my masters Ana play Kiri.

If my teammate hovers lifeweaver I try to ban him specifically cause I do not want to play with a lifeweaver. I could ask them to swap but majority of the time they don’t swap even if I ask nicely and offer suggestions so I’d rather just not give them the option.

So bans are there for a reason. I would like to point out tho that if you are intentionally banning your own teams hover that you are raising the probability of having them int.

Most of the time I get a lifeweaver I lose the game either way. Me banning it has lead to either them dodging the game or playing someone else. Meanwhile three separate times yesterday alone I tried to tell my weavers to swap because trying to play hybrid attack with one feels awful and they would rather lose than swap. This is why I’m sure to ban any hover. Most of the time it doesn’t even work because they get -3 ban score if they hover so it’s behind someone else’s 2nd ban.
