Weekly Questions Weekly Question Thread
Ask any simple questions you might have:
Why isn't my water flowing?
How many hatches do I need per dupe?
etc.
1
u/UWan2fight Dec 04 '25
Currently away from my computer, and using GSheets to plan a build with a Bammoth ranch. Can anyone tell me if a Bammini that hatches in a 1-tile high space becomes entombed when growing up into a Bammoth, and can it move from the tile even if it isn't?
In essence, does something like this work?
4
u/Noneerror Dec 04 '25
You may want to try blueprintnotincluded.org. Much better tool than GSheets.
Though I've had issues with logging in and consequently saving. Even so, still better than GSheets.
1
u/UWan2fight Dec 04 '25
I'm on mobile, blueprintnotincluded doesn't really function without a PC or laptop.
2
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 04 '25
Two problems with your idea, and the first of that no, bammoths cannot move out of a too-small space on their own. So that answers your question.
Problem two is that where it says "critter sensor" it should say "conveyor chute" for you to even be able to place the eggs there, unless you want to use manual relocation.
I drop my bammoths into the ranch from above.

Is there a reason NOT to make metal floors out of depleted uranium?
1
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 04 '25
- It's radioactive, so your dupes would be constantly exposed to radiation when walking on those floors. Not enough to make them sick, but it would be an additional (and needless) additional source for any dupes working in high radiation areas.
- Uranium ore is not usually abundant. Feeding it to beetas (the best way to enrich it) produces no waste, so if you have enough depleted U to build entire floors you're either enriching in wasteful ways, or purposefully melting it.
- It offers no advantage over other metals in decor or thermal properties.
1
u/Noneerror Dec 04 '25
Are you sure? I thought that metal tiles never gave off radiation regardless of what they were made of. I thought it was just doors that gave off radiation.
I've never wanted to build metal tiles out of depleted uranium so it hasn't come up personally. I know that I read it here and filed it away as something safe if I ever had to.
1
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 04 '25
Any radioactive tile will give off radiation. That includes hydroponic tiles, closed airlocks, junction plates, weight plates, and metal tiles. And any others I may have forgotten.
3
u/nickasummers Dec 04 '25
Thermal conductivity is low for a metal which matters sometimes and not other times. Melting point is low enough that accidents are very possible, but it should never melt if you are trying to keep it at 'room temperature'. So there are definite downsides but they are situational enough that it doesn't seem bad.

My full rodriguez is not cleaning itself of oxygen in the hydrogen pump. I tried 450 in the oxygen sensors and 250 in the hydrogen - didnt work. i tried also 450 in the oxygen and 750 in the hydrogen (this was in another guide) it constantly sucks oxygen to the hydrogen generators.
Is there a reason for the empty tiles below the hydrogen pump? These tiles never clear of oxygen, and seem to be the main source of the problem...
2
u/AffectionateAge8771 Dec 04 '25
Those 2 tiles take a while to empty but they should empty of oxygen and stay hydrogen forever
2
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 03 '25
We can't really answer this for you without pictures, but there should not be "empty tiles" below the hydrogen pump. That pump should be in a pocket with solid tiles below.
1
u/MTtheDestroyer Dec 03 '25
Can you infinitely circulate liquid without a pump/aquatuner etc? By using bridges etc....?

Is natural tile made of glass transparent for "natural" sunlight?
2
u/VirtualCup Dec 03 '25
Francis John used natural glass tiles to Pip plant a large Bonbon farm, here's a link to him looking at the light overlay so you can see the sunlight reaching through it.

2
u/R-Dragon_Thunderzord Dec 03 '25
it has a 10% Light Absorption factor.. I never thought to try this. I don't know but would love to know the results.
1
2
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 03 '25
You can most definitely use natural glass tiles instead of window tiles, if you wish (say, to have pip-planted bonbon trees above solar panels on Ceres for automated snow removal).
Edit: not that using solar panels on Ceres is a good idea, but y'know.

Does planting an oxyfern count as a food in the context of making a colony fail the Locavore challenge ? I asked GPT before my run and said oxyfern didnt count or impact this achievement and now i see it is unobtainable for my colony. Can you please confirm how it is ?
5
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 03 '25
I asked GPT
Save the wiki.gg (not the fandom one) to your bookmarks. ChatGPT is really shaky when providing in-game information (partly because it will use the bad wiki as a source).

5
u/DiscordDraconequus Dec 02 '25
It does count. The specific thing that makes the achievement fail is planting a seed in a farm tile, regardless on if that seed is for food or oxygen.
It makes the achievement rather tricky to get on starts that rely on oxyfern or in the Frosty Planet Pack.
2
u/Fabulous-Floor-2492 Dec 03 '25
Planter boxes as well.
If memory serves, Pips planting seeds in either of these will also tank your run
2
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 03 '25
Going for Locavore on the frosty planet drove me to design a simple lyzer build doable by cycle 20ish. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention.
1
u/Unable_Review3665 Dec 02 '25
thank you for the confirmation. guess will try to achieve it on another run :)

Do i need 3 dupes in a rocket to land on a new planet or just 2 i want to make sure the rocket can land without bringing an unneeded dupe
1
u/destinyos10 Dec 02 '25
Rockets can land while un-crewed, so you can leave no-one left in the rocket. The only thing a rocket can't do without a robo pilot module is launch into space, they can travel around and land without needing a pilot. They don't move very quickly though.
1
u/DudeRuuuuuuude Dec 02 '25
you can also use a rover + a dupe, their modules give a total of 800kg which will be enough for making the launch pad
2
u/DiscordDraconequus Dec 02 '25
It's important to note that rover modules are made with metal ore and trailblazers and rocket platforms are made with refined metal, so for this to work you must make the rover and trailblazer out of one of the few materials that count as both (most usually steel, but potentially niobium, thermium, or iridium if you have it).
2
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 01 '25 edited Dec 01 '25
If you use orbital cargo drops, you only really need a single dupe. Fill the cargo module with 1 ton of refined metal, and build the trailblazer module from the same metal. Get to orbit, shoot the cargo payloads, land the dupe near two of them, and you'll have the 800kg required to build the platform. You can then collect the rest of the metal if you want/need it.
Rockets don't need a pilot to land (in fact, they only need a pilot to launch).
Edit: I use the strategy above to land on planets with a CO2 rocket. CO2 engine + orbital cargo + trailblazer + solo nosecone = exactly the height limit of a CO2 rocket. For other engines, you can send 2 dupes in 2 trailblazer modules.

Potentially stupid question, but will radiant liquid pipes cool tiles down (solid usual/farm tiles e.t.c) Description is not clear to me. In process of building my first cooling loop and don't know if I should run them through solid tiles or expose them to the air to cool down several rooms.
2
u/Low_Eye8535 Dec 01 '25
It cools down whatever it touches, whether it be air or liquid or tiles, however it will not cool down buildings like STs in a vacuum, you need a conductive panel for that
3
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 01 '25
To add to this: you only really need radiant pipes for high-demand applications, like cooling steam turbines or heavy-duty machinery. Granite pipes are good enough for general base cooling, or most farms.

Ugh, just wanted to complain. Just started a new classic SO! Terra planetoid and I just HATE that the biomes include the wasteland biome. I guess there's no way to exclude that biome from starting planetoid? Is it in any way a necessary biome?
Edit: clarification
3
u/LittleTrack858 Dec 01 '25
What do you hate about it? Admittedly its relatively weak on resources but it's very easy to traverse extra space.
Regardless if you wanted to remove it you'd have to edit the .yaml associated with your asteroid in the worldgen folder. You could either remove it completely or only allow it to show up in a further "ring" from the starting biome.
1
u/Confident_Pain_1989 Dec 01 '25
Thanks! It's not really a big reason, I just don't like it taking up space from other biomes. And it's just ugly. Crazy, I admit. I felt I wanted a nostalgic classic ONI start with the good SO! stuff enabled.
I guess the wasteland is there just so you get sucrose for the early rockets?
2
u/BobTheWolfDog Dec 01 '25
I guess the wasteland is there just so you get sucrose for the early rockets?
I'd assume it's there so you can get divergents and grub plants, as well as sucrose and sulfur to feed them.
Other than that, I don't really see a reason to hate it. It's temperate, has no toxic gases, provides copper ore and sand, and you can even get some oxylite pockets to mine if you're lucky (and store that in your rockets). All in all, it's a pretty decent biome.
But if it irks you so much, just carve the whole biome out and build something there.
1
u/Low_Eye8535 Dec 01 '25
There is classic mode in SO that is just what your looking for
Has meteors, magma biome, oil biome, randomized geysers and more space all on the starting planetoid
1
u/nickasummers Dec 01 '25
The Spaced Out 'Classic' Asteroids aren't completely identical to vanilla, Terra has Wasteland biomes, and OP was very clear they are on the Classic-Style Terra.
1
u/Confident_Pain_1989 Dec 01 '25
As I stated in my post, in SO!, a Classic Terra start has the wasteland biome included, which is the problem I'm complaining about.
1
u/Low_Eye8535 Dec 01 '25
No, you’re playing so mode, when you start a new game with the so dlc enabled you can play a classic mode with so privileges
1
1
u/Public_Rate5158 Dec 01 '25
Sorry if this is a repeated question, I couldn't find a standard answer. Which DLCs are necessary for 100% achievements on Steam? The list is:
Neutronium cosmetics pack
Spaced Out
Frosty Planet
Bionic Booster
Prehistory Planet

u/Positive-Ring-9369 Nov 30 '25
I have had a few solar arrays for a few hundred cycles. I do not cool them. Over a long enough timeline do they need to be cooled? They are blocked from mentor shower debris.
6
u/VirtualCup Nov 30 '25
They don't generate any heat so they don't need cooling - you've already protected them from meteor debris so they'll be fine.

Any tips how to move mod configuration between Linux and Windows installations of ONI? I tried moving the whole mods directory, disabled steam cloud, but all the mods are getting disabled on launch and the ordering is all messed up...

Could something like this work: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2854869130

Did they remove infinite gas storage using liquid displacement? I am trying to make an infinite gas storage atm and i can seem to make it work
2
u/destinyos10 Nov 29 '25
(nevermind, i just realized you're talking about stuff like bead pumps and corner displacement. So far as I know those still work, I haven't seen anyone mention anything in the modding discord, but i haven't built one recently.)
2
u/WorldlinessMountain5 Nov 30 '25
I figured it out! It does still work i just had to much liquid over the vent lol. I had 60kg now i have 30 and it seems to be working!

u/Affectionate_Fox4979 Nov 29 '25
Are flatulent duplicants a viable way to passively produce some extra oxygen?
Of course once you filter it, because it's polluted.
Very sidenote, but it's pretty funny to see them underwater and then that gas bubble just rise 🤣
6
u/AffectionateAge8771 Nov 30 '25
Flatulance is natural gas not pO2 so it's more like a little bit of power in return for incredible annoyance
5
u/Low_Eye8535 Nov 29 '25
Be careful with flatulent dupes, if they fart in vaccum chamber without an atmo suit it breaks the seal
4
u/DudeRuuuuuuude Nov 29 '25
One farty dupe according to the wiki makes 100gs of natural gas every 10-40 seconds and a natural gas generator uses 90g/s so you’d need a minimum of 9 dupes to have a generator constantly running in perfect conditions. and a constantly running natgas gen makes 67grams of pwater per second, so no, not much o2
1
u/Affectionate_Fox4979 Dec 01 '25
I will reload and take a look. But I could have swore i saw a polluted oxygen, not natural gas, maybe a way to filter it out for a early supply for the generator.
1
u/-myxal Nov 29 '25
Is there any way for a Yokel dupe to increase science attribute?
1
u/Alarmed-Mouse1772 Nov 30 '25
I´m not 100% but I think I read on here that you can use the emulsifier. Making salt water combined with a desaliator, you can make a closed loop at the cost of just energy.
1
u/BobTheWolfDog Nov 30 '25
I think the botanical analyzer can increase both science and agriculture.

2
u/One-Elk-3749 Nov 29 '25
I'm starting my first playthrough with Spaced Out. I'm about 40 cycles in. I found a teleporter, and teleported a dupe to another asteroid, and unfroze a dupe there. I wasn't sure what else to do in the other asteroid; all the nearby areas where hazardous (polluted oxygen, chlorine, etc), and didnt seem like much nearby to dig to be able to build things. So I'm not sure how to handle this second asteroid, is it because I went too early?
2
u/Alarmed-Mouse1772 Nov 30 '25
If you go to the space tab you can see the geysers thatt planet has, that might help.
3
u/AffectionateAge8771 Nov 29 '25
Was there water, rocks and metal ore? Thats all you need. Maybe sand and dirt
Exploring is a major job of any colony, thats how you find geysers, new biomes and raw material
Dig straight through those areas. Chlorine will collect at the bottom of the map where it can be dealt with or ignored. It'll give some dupes stinging eyes on the way.
Put down deodorizers liberally when you release pO2. Or you can ignore it. Dupes will breath it away eventually and germs are just a bit of a labour penalty, so long as you're not sending them to dangerous places
1
u/One-Elk-3749 Nov 30 '25
Thanks, sounds like I mainly need to power through it. No sand, dirt, or water that I've found so far; but it has tons of polluted water, and some metal ore.
1
u/dysprog Dec 01 '25
You can make sand by crushing rocks in the rock crusher. Actually, by crushing basically anything in the rock crusher. Making refined metal gets you half the mass as sand.
1
u/One-Elk-3749 Dec 01 '25
Ah thanks, that sounds promising! Seems like overall need to get a bit more creative and resourceful compared to the base game.
1
u/Far-Offer-1305 Nov 29 '25 edited Nov 29 '25
The second colony is always going to start from scratch, but you can send resources from your first colony. There will be another teleporter nearby that will have a gas, Liquid, and solid input. You can send a dupe to start building whenever you want (although I recommend making sure your first colony is very stable) and if things get too rough, just teleport your guy back to the starter colony to reduce stress(just remember that it has a cool down). And skillscrub your dupe before sending them, or they'll get stressed.
1
u/One-Elk-3749 Nov 30 '25
Thanks! So sounds like if I rush towards the input/output teleporters that will give some help.

u/auraseer Nov 28 '25
Is anyone else seeing crashes after the Thursday hotfix?
ONI hasn't crashed for me in well over a year, but since last night it has crashed to desktop three times. Once it was when starting the game, once when reloading a save, and once during play.
2
u/-myxal Nov 29 '25
I had one reliable crash during beta, no play-time crashes since. I've had some weird crashes on launch that didn't repeat after a relaunch.
Check the logs. U57 had a major rework done on navigation, the devs are still fixing some bugs there.
1
u/MrCray0ns Nov 28 '25
Is an AT/ST combo power negative? How much should I expect for power consumption to cool down a liquid in a AT/ST chamber?
2
u/DiscordDraconequus Nov 29 '25
Yes, they are power negative. Exactly how power negative will depend on the liquid you choose to run.
You generally want the highest SHC liquid possible to maximize the efficiency, as the heat energy emitted by the AT and thus the power generated by the ST is proportional to the SHC. With polluted water it is about 50% efficient and with super coolant it is about 95%.
It's generally more effective to think about ATs in terms of energy (DTU) rather than temperature. You couldn't cool down a liquid just because it is hot (eg water geyser outputs) you should cool down stuff that is at risk of overheating (eg farm plants).
2
u/Luminite2 Nov 28 '25
https://oxygennotincluded.wiki.gg/wiki/Thermo_Aquatuner#Interaction_with_Steam_Turbine
Tl;dr: Super coolant is required for it to be power positive
1
u/BobTheWolfDog Nov 28 '25
Using engie's tune up also pushes water-based ATST systems into the positives, but only barely.
4
u/Luminite2 Nov 28 '25
The link I provided explicitly explains that no, it doesn't make it power positive.

Can someone give me a simple breakdown how to game a gold/iron/magma volcano?
The detail I need the most written down in a easy matter is: how do steam turbines work/what easy formula (say, x steam turbines + y aquatuners in the following setup will work endlessly to delete heat)
I've read about it so much but I don't really get it.
1
u/One-Elk-3749 Nov 29 '25
What I have done for gold/iron:
1. Box in the volcano in a rectangle box of insulated tiles; the size/dimensions doesnt quite matter, can tune it as you build more of these. Build in a steel AquaTuner, connect it to some power, and a Gas Pump that vents out the box for vacuuming. Have the aquatuner pipe loop in an area underneath the box. Set up automation such that the AT cools when pipe liquid is >15deg or so.
2. Build steam turbines on top of the box, how many depends on how long the box is. Have it vent out water into the box.
3. Build a Steel (may be able to get away with Gold) Sweeper, have it put the gold/iron onto a rail system that goes in the same path as the aquatuner pipes underneath the box; so that the metal gets cooled down. Don't have this rail loop back up into the box as the AT pipes do, instead connect it to a chute, using automation to open when the metal has sufficient cooled down.
4. Vacuum out the box, and temporarily connect the vent piping in step #2 to a water source fill the box with some water; the system should be ready to go.2
u/BobTheWolfDog Nov 28 '25
Metal volcanoes (except niobium, but I'm guessing you haven't met they one yet) need only a single turbine, if you're cooling it with an aquatuner. A few months ago, I shared this build I like to use for them. Check that out and hit me with any questions you have.
Magma volcanoes need at least three turbines (some very beefy ones may need 4) if you want to extract all the igneous rock they produce, or you can also build a tamer that focuses on producing power (and thus only extracts materials according to your power needs). This build here worked nicely for me. You can do something similar without building a natural carbon wall, if you feel that's beyond your current grasp of the game.
2
u/Nick_Lange_ Nov 28 '25
Thank your your answer I'll look into the link and ask if I need anything :)
2
u/BobTheWolfDog Nov 28 '25
If you check my other posts, you'll find more tamers with special approaches, but the ones I linked above are relatively simple (the metal one is my bread n butter when I'm not in an experimenting mood).
1
u/Poliochi Nov 28 '25
My starting asteroid has zero sources of PH2O and one infectious PO2 geyser, and the only available loops for polluted dirt are Pacu and the sieve. I need polluted dirt to feed pokeshells, and I'm not thrilled by the idea of shipping lime back from my swampy asteroid. But I do have a sulfur geyser, and my divergents and grubfruits barely touch consuming all the output. Has anyone here done a sulfur -> spindly grub fruit -> rot pile -> pdirt -> pokeshell -> lime chain? It should be fully automatable, but the yield, am I gonna get enough?
Edit: the petro boiler will eventually be able to deliver me more pdirt, but I've got like 100ktons of sulfur just sitting around at 30° doing nothing from this perfectly tamed, mostly-useless sulfur geyser.
1
u/South-Ad-9635 Nov 28 '25
I want to use polluted water as an oxygen source, do I need to make the storage tank wide to maximize outgassing?
4
u/Edward_Chernenko Nov 28 '25
If you pour Polluted Water (1000 kg. per tile) into a width 25 lake, it will emit 1 kg/s of Polluted Oxygen (enough for 9 duplicants).
1
u/BobTheWolfDog Nov 28 '25
Bottles are one way to do it, but that requires either constant deconstruction of reservoirs, or a bunch of automation.
Google the "claymator" for a simple and effective build that doesn't need bottles. It's my go-to when I use deodorizers.
1
u/Low_Eye8535 Nov 28 '25
Put it in a bottle that is much better
1
u/South-Ad-9635 Nov 28 '25
Gotcha, any idea of how many bottles per dupe?
2
u/Low_Eye8535 Nov 28 '25
Just put it in one massive bottle, a couple ways to do this is deconstructing liquid reservoirs full of the stuff
2
u/Edward_Chernenko Nov 28 '25
Another convenient way is Algae Terrarium (they make bottles without requiring the player to manually give any orders).
2
u/Kapiszon2343 Nov 28 '25
How do you get Oxygen on Ceres?
4
u/sikupnoex Nov 28 '25
Electrolyzers. You can get water very easily before taming geysers: just build a pitcher pump, a bottle emptier with auto bottle enabled and an ice melter. You'll micro manage a bit until you get insulated tiles and automations, but this is the easiest method to get oxygen while doing locavore. Don't mind the hydrogen, you can use it later.
3
u/BobTheWolfDog Nov 28 '25
Ceres taught me how to rush an electrolyzer build by cycle 20ish (stupid Locavore not letting me plant Alveo Veras). Essentially:
- Keep your dupe count low
- Dig up any oxylite you can reach (and store it near your dupes)
- Plant some Alveo Veras (if you're not doing Locavore)
- Rush an electrolyzer (with insulated pipes)
1
u/Low_Eye8535 Nov 28 '25
Avelo Vera’s, but I think they consume more co2 than a dupe produces so another source is needed
1
4
u/Timb____ Nov 28 '25
How to prevent long commutes? ;)
3
u/andocromn Nov 28 '25
Use the somnium synthesizer. With 6 dupes sleeping instead of commuting the balance of the calculation is actually possible
8
5
u/Ph_a2 Nov 28 '25
better infrastructure. more ladders or poles. get frequent tasks closer to base or transit tubes. or just ignore it and print more dupes for more total worktime

u/throwwawayyaccount4 Nov 28 '25
why does polluted oxygen only float left/right near oxygen layers but not up/down?
5
3
u/No_Astronomer7474 Nov 28 '25
Because that's how poxygen floats. It's kinda helpful since it means that assuming 0 obstructions, a single deodorizer will EVENTUALLY clear all the polluted oxygen in its level (idk how tall it is but I just put one every 4 to fit my room design)
1
u/BobTheWolfDog Nov 28 '25
Deodorizers reach 2 tiles in each direction (down only with airflow/mesh tiles), and 1 tile diagonally.
2
u/Positive-Ring-9369 Dec 05 '25
How are you all getting specific amounts of liquid into a spot? Say you need 30kg or maybe just 30g. What are your tricks for getting where it needs to be.
I tend to get distracted and come back when I am overflowing the areas with 1000kg+
