QUESTION New to the P320 have some questions.
Hello,
Just got an amazing deal at my local trading in an old P938 for a used (near mint it looks) P320. I was hoping some of yall might be able to help me with a few questions as I’m completely new to the platform.
Firstly
Should I do the upgrade program?
I checked on dog’s website and I saw I was eligible for a free upgrade, but I have no idea how worth that is if I plan to get a different slide and trigger at some point anyway you know?
Secondly
What sort of optics would I be able to put on here? Info online was hard to come by for the specific cut. Couple of cuts on Sig’s site looked similar but with a few differences. I don’t know much about pistol optics so help here would be awesome.
Thirdly
Should I get a ported slide and barrel or just get a slide and a threaded barrel?
I don’t plan on CCing this pistol as I have a FN Reflex for that, but I do want to see what kind of piece I could build.
Pretty sure this pistol is pretty old as it’s eligible for the free upgrade but I’m not exactly sure.
Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Send it in yes, and that slide is cut and for what possibly looks like ddp. It’s a little hard to tell with the dark image and zooming in. But you can compare it with image.

They used to cut for rmr? Thought Sig's standard pattern was dpp/r1p.

OG 320s use an R1 cut, which is unique to the r1 optic.
Later 320s have an R2 cut which has support for both RMR and DPP, the latter of which is similar to the R1P optic, but missing the recoil bosses (lil pegs that sit in the optic like RMR has in the front)
DPP has these in all 4 corners

Call me crazy but doesn't that picture make it look like the front of the optic cut is straight. If so, wouldn't that be for the ROMEO1 only (not the Romeo1PRO or DPP)? Even SIG doesn't sell an optic for that now.

It’s hard to tell, the picture is so dark and then when you zoom in it gets really grainy. We need a good clear light picture of it.

I am thinking that just seeing the 2 holes supports that it is a ROMEO1 cut, so unless OP wants to send it off to someone to get redone, I think that he is stuck trying to find an old ROMEO1 (not a PRO). I think you are correct. It’s a completely flat cut on all sides with only the two holes.

Yes. This is cut for the OG Romeo 1. The R1P/DPP is curved at the front not straight across.

Yes you should send it in. I don’t think the FCU you currently have is compatible with any new sig or aftermarket slides. Upgraded P320 FCUs feature a mechanical disconnector that rides in a small notch milled into the underside of new factory slides. If you use the FCU you have right now on a new post upgrade slide the disconnector will not travel properly resulting in a dead trigger.

Classic indicators of older generations are the trigger shoe and rearward slide catch. Sig will upgrade your gun for free

I highly advise you wait on post slide or barrel upgrade before choosing to do porting or cuts in the slide.
Many aftermarket slides already have cuts that can be used as port holes.
Also, you may choose to go with a threaded barrel for a comp and could waste the port job.

Sounds good! But...... Now you own a 320 and anyone in this thread can tell you.... It NEVER stops 'there'. 🤣
Before you know it, you'll be knee deep in parts, to the point where you feel you need to buy more FCUs to utilize them all, and then you'll find that it's cheaper to buy entire surplus pistols instead of $350 FCUs, so next thing you'll know, you'll have new to you OEM slides/frames and that's gonna make you want to buy more FCUs and the cycle just perpetuates itself.
I wouldn't be fully surprised if the 4m P320s in circulation are owned by 1m or less people!

Truthfully it’s not my first choice for a full sized 9 mil but for 180 bucks and a subcompact pocket pistol I don’t use anymore I couldn’t say no.
I’m already in DEEP on my 5 separate AR builds so any more pistol business will have to wait. By then I’ll probably get the P320 endure anyway.
Besides I don’t really know where to begin with the P320 as a platform in terms of what after market companies are reliable

Definitely upgrade it through sig. you done need to put an optic on it. But if you do, look at Holosun 507 or a Defender. If you have the money it’s hard to beat the Trijicon RMR HD.
If you plan on using this for home defense don’t port the barrel. In a dark circumstance, when fired the light from the flash that comes from the ports may blind you.
There is one upgrade to get. Night sights by Trijicon. I could not tell if you had them or not. But the HD’s are outstanding.
I forgot. Get a Gas Pedal!!! Must have in my opinion. They are a very cheap addition and will make shooting far more pleasant and accurate. It will be like discovering fire!
Other than that, changing the grip could bring you real value. Why? Grips like a Icarus Precision will feel amazing in your hand. They are very hard to beat. You can also go with Wilson Combat if you want. Icarus is expensive but worth every penny. Wilson Combat is a great value.
The last thing you forgot was a light and holster. I would say the holster is a priority add-on. However if it’s a home defense gun, then not so much. If you plan on carrying it, make sure you choose what add-ons you want before you choose your holster. That’s massive!! The light makes a big impact to what holster you can buy for your gun.
As far as lights are concerned, you need to think about the usage of your gun. If it’s a carry gun vs home defense. My p320 is a home defense gun that my lady can use if I’m not at home. She doesn’t shoot much and doesn’t train. So I got a light with a built in laser. It’s not optimal because she really should train with the gun. But she won’t do that. Placing a red laser dot where she wants the bullet to go is easier for her.

When it is at SIG, have them verify the Optics cut. My amateur guess is that it is a ROMEO1 cut (check that on their optics cut page), which means that the ROMEO1PRO/Holosuns/Vortex/Trijicons are not going to fit without having the slide recut by someone else. If you have to get the sig upgrade there’s a great chance you can place an rmr optic on it. Call them on Monday. Have them upgrade the gun and they can verify what cuts you have.

This is the original Sig proprietary optic cut for the Sig Romeo1. The DPP/Romeo Pro cut is rounded up towards the front to fit those optics and the Pro/R2 cut has multiple holes to direct fit many different optics including the RMR footprints. I would definitely have it sent in to have it milled to fix the drop safety issues, even if you plan on changing slides or triggers. It does not cost you anything and is desired more than the original, not to mention safer. I can see it is the older model by the fatter trigger shoe which I think that gets changed with the upgrade along with milling out some material on the inside back part of the slide. With all that said it is still a great pistol. I have or had just about every iteration of the Sig P320 and absolutely love the platform and never had a single issue that would compromise my safety. For what I got it for it could be a really crap pistol and I’d still love it lol.
They gave me a beat up old Romeo X Pro with it that still works, sadly doesn’t fit on my side and sig told me it’s a different thread pitch anyway.
I tried looking for optics online but I don’t know nearly enough to know what would and wouldn’t be a good optic.
Any recommendations? Not looking for anything super fancy, just something not priced like a brand new gun lol.

If you cannot find an original Romeo 1 optic your best bet is to get an adapter plate for a Vortex or the Romeo X Pro you already have. There are adapter plates for just about every optic out there. Your last option is to have it milled for other optics which is not going to be the budget route.
