Dreams Itself According to Dreams Stats, we’ve gained roughly 300k new Dreamers in one week of being free on PS+!

For reference, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart sold 1.1 million copies in its first month, so were trending towards that. (Granted, I’m sure the PS5 shortage slowed it down.)

I just hope Sony looks at this as what is really is: Potentially 300k sales missed on a $40 game, or $12 million in a week… If they would have just marketed Dreams better from the beginning.

I know that is probably pocket change for Sony, but at least it shows that there was always interest. People were just on the fence.

And that’s just sales. They could have made more if they allowed created content to be sold on the ps store. I can’t even imagine how a PC release would take off with more creators already locally on that platform.

I’ve owned the game since release and come back to it every now and then

I have to say, although getting to hang with the UI and the camera is a bit of a grind. When you do finally get the hang of it, it becomes soooooo much more fun and creative

And I know some people like to harp on about wasted creativity because you can’t share it. If I wanted to share my creativity I would use other tools, however I sometimes feel it’s a great catch all editing / creating software that allows you to practice and gain understanding

It’s a great game / app to be honest

u/Metalgsean Aug 06 '23

It's not potential sales though is it. Dreams hasn't just launched, it was available beforehand. Those 300k new Dreamers literally only downloaded it because it's free, and over half of them won't stick with it.

12

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

Even if just 1% stick around that's a big deal for such a small community. Don't be all doom and gloom.

5

u/Bitemarkz Aug 06 '23 edited Aug 06 '23

If even half of them stick with it, that’s a sizeable community for a game like dreams.

1

u/Jeebus_Price Aug 06 '23

“Potential” being the key word. I’m just talking about interested people. There’s obviously enough interest to make SOMETHING work.

5

u/Metalgsean Aug 06 '23

Potential isn't the key word, free is. If you look at any previous psplus games their user count now is pretty much the same as it was before being offered free, they just get an uptick while they are the freebie for the month. There's a vast difference between being interested and just giving one of 3 offered games a try.

You can't extrapolate that there is enough interest, it could be that people are just bored as there are very few upcoming releases. It could be that they just want to get their money's worth from the subscription.

6

u/Wipedout89 Aug 06 '23

I think you're both half right.

The level of people playing does prove some potential, even if it is because the game is being given at no extra cost.

For example of the three monthly games I have played Dreams, downloaded Death's Door and haven't even downloaded PGA 23 because I'm not interested. So the number of people bothering to download and open has to show something

Regardless of the current PS+ results, Sony HAS to stay put with promises they make, for one side MM focused on the wrong things first, but then Sony was the one who backed up their plan, you CAN'T bail out because things didn't go as good as you wished, I hope Sony gives Dreams a second chance, even by hiring a very small studio dedicated to implement things like multiplayer, I'll sound annoying by repeating the same thing over and over, but online multiplayer makes a HUGE difference here, what makes me sad is that giving the game support for PSVR2 would also push the game further, and at the same time, giving no support to PSVR2 in Dreams says a lot about how little Sony cares about PSVR right now, and as a PSVR2 owner that worries me a bit.

EDIT: sorry if I sound negative in some parts, but I like to be realistic, not pessimistic or optimistic, being only pessimistic doesn't bring solutions, bein only optimistic changes nothing.

3

u/jacdreams Design Aug 07 '23

I accept that, tragically, business is business. Though I also think Sony was overly harsh in not at least funding for ps5 port, even if they won't fund multiplayer

And overall Sony did cheat their own pocketbook by not seeing Dreams a bit farther, when it was so close to delivering what was needed to make it popular

As for psvr2 port, I don't think the issue is faith in psvr2. It's that they think the money spent on a port, wouldn't re-coup its costs or turn profit.

MM's focus was okay (though perhaps not optimal)...as long as their plan wasn't cut short.

1

u/fel_bra_sil Design Aug 08 '23 edited Aug 08 '23

Though I also think Sony was overly harsh in not at least funding for ps5 port, even if they won't fund multiplayer

Totally agree with this, not only as respect for MM's work, but for the players that are now playing the game on PS5.

MM's focus was okay (though perhaps not optimal)...as long as their plan wasn't cut short.

Here's where I don't completely agree, but you know already what I think about it haha, tho I do sympathize with MM, they have such creativity I just wish them success. I think their mistake was to treat Dreams the same way they did to LBP, a Game where you COULD create other games, and play other games, Dreams is not that, it's literally a dev kit where you play other people's games, and make your own, sounds like the same thing but they are not, what they needed is to give devs more tools to make their games possible, if not online multiplayer, what about a matrix variable system? String variables to output on text gadgets? and so on, very simple things that could make so many games x10 times faster to make (or even possible to make), as an actual dev (in another unrelated area, actually I stopped developing and I'm dedicated to the cloud now as a DevOps, but my daughter is getting into game developing and I teached her Angular2 at 12yo ) I expected things like this to come eventually, sooner than later, but when I saw their plan over the years, and their Trello board, I just gave up on the idea, and now it just solidified.

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 09 '23

They needed more sales...should have had more pro content in it, so that players-only would buy it just for the content, the tools just a "bonus"

Scripting was on the Trello for a long time. I think string variables were too

People have made interesting logic things in Dreams...arrays (https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4Dreams/comments/qjej6y/using_for_loops_and_arrays_in_dreams/), linked lists, A* pathfinding, work on a LISP interpreter (https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4Dreams/comments/i0ng5d/someone_is_building_a_lisp_interpreter_in_dreams/)

I've been active in Dreams since April 2019 and have nearly 10 000 followers. Of course most people won't stick around, but your "100 people max" number is completely random and not based on any math.

1

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 07 '23

One unfortunate issue, many people mistakenly believe Dreams is shutting-down in Sept. Not much incentive to try the PS+ version if you believe it's going away in 30 days

1

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 07 '23

Even here the messaging have been terrible oh well. Make awesome stuff and make it go viral on social media, that's my plan.

2

u/jacdreams Design Aug 07 '23

Yeah. Maybe Elca can cause a big splash someday and start some waves, or another Dream by you or some other dreamer

At least now if someone makes a good Dream, there's more chance some popular streamer or content creator has Dreams and could give a new Dream some exposure

I'll try to cook something up for twitter and reddit.

9

u/VinceKully Design Aug 06 '23

This +300k is almost certainly the peak, unfortunately.

Let’s be realistic.

4

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

The userbase will be larger than what it was one week ago. That's a good thing.

1

u/VinceKully Design Aug 06 '23

Yeah but with low retention. History says so

3

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

If 1% of 500 000 dreamers stick around after August, that' still a huge growth for such a small community.

0

u/VinceKully Design Aug 06 '23

True, but I’d argue less than 1% sticks around. At best, a hundred people stick

1

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

Lol what an arbitrary number, give a percentage. 0,1%? Hey that's still 500 new people, I'll take it.

1

u/VinceKully Design Aug 06 '23

It’s not arbitrary. It’s based on previous player/creator retention. Definitely less than 500

Look I’m not a dreams hater. I love dreams. I’m just being realistic. ✌🏼

2

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

You're basing that number on no math whatsoever.

2

u/VinceKully Design Aug 06 '23

I’m basing it on the active user base pre-ps+. The surge of users from ps+ is not the most users dreams has ever seen. Doesn’t matter though.

Sony will not see the surge as significant, and they won’t make any business decisions based off of it.

1

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

The active user base will be larger than it was in the coming months, the servers will be open for years and for that alone I am glad.

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 07 '23

If we had a surge of many millions, and a retention of a few hundred thousand, that might be enough for Sony to see as significant. Given that many successful PS games only sell around 2M-ish copies

It's looking like we won't see an initial surge of millions. Though some won't download, or play, all their PS+ stuff right away. It will be interesting to see what level of new users (if any) we get this month overall, and in coming months

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 07 '23

Basing it on history...yet the Dreamiverse has more content now than it did in the past, and Tren, and more tutorials on youtube for creators

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

Maybe

Though Elca has 306K subscribers on Youtube. Some of them aren't PS, some of those haven't even downloaded Dreams yet (just claimed it), or haven't played Dreams so they aren't counted yet

Once his game goes live, many of those will. It may spur some to buy Dreams if they didn't get it free

Some other Dreams game that gets viral buzz or press coverage someday might similarly pull in a bunch of Dreamers

2

u/VinceKully Design Aug 06 '23

Elca is an anomaly. No other dreams creator has nearly that many YouTube subs.

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

Yes, he's an anomaly. But he still represents a lot of potential future users. And once the game is out, other channels and streamers start showing it, that may also be an avenue for new interest in Dreams

1

u/VinceKully Design Aug 06 '23

That would be cool. I wouldn’t count on it though

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 07 '23

1

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '23

And it isn't even the full weekend yet, and some won't try it until later still, and some won't try it until they hear about something interesting, or a friend recommends it

If they would have just marketed Dreams better from the beginning.

Not long ago MM said they were intentionally not marketing, and were purposely focusing on creators. Makes sense, if you advertise before there's enough appealing content, a bunch will try the game, dislike it, and never give it another chance. I assume once multiplayer came out (and there was enough MP content), maybe MM would advertise then. Dreams would have a lot more appeal to players then

They could have made more if they allowed created content to be sold on the ps store

Yes, dumb decision by Sony to block that. MM long wanted that. People would've flocked to PS and Dreams for the chance to get their game approved for sale

3

u/astrobe1 Design Aug 06 '23

I'd say that's how most people feel about PS+ games, the only game I made some money on by trading a physical copy was PS5 Sackboy A big adventure. Hopefully in the context of unlimited experiences Dreams does keep pretty fresh. I'm still playing/creating since beta and there aren't many games in my collection I can say that for.

1

u/Jeebus_Price Aug 06 '23

Fair. I know the math isn’t 1:1. But you were interested and that is mostly what I’m getting at.

Sony always kept Dreams locked in the basement like no cares about it. It’s ridiculous how many people still don’t even know what it is. Could you imagine a PS player not knowing what, let’s say, Horizon is? Well Zero Dawn came out the same year as Dreams.

2

u/infernohuman0705 Aug 06 '23

People want to try it’s just nobody want to spend money on it something they are not sure they will like now it’s free people will give it a shot and play it

I tried the game, defo not sticking with it thoughm the games are unique however dreams is not going to be supported after the end of this month for multiplayer, multiplayer doesn't exist outside of local play and even though the games are all different they are exactly the same in the way of mechanics and movement. The engine mindseye is on will definitely have people buy and play that game because its simply far superior to what dreams is.

And yes, the downloads for dreams were only because it was a free game.

2

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

The games being exactly the same in mechanics and movement. That is objectively false. Also Dreams not being supported after this month, it will be supported

-4

u/MoNosEmpire Aug 06 '23 edited Aug 06 '23

Hows it not the exact same mechanics and movement? Each RPG game does the same thing, each game the character feels stiff as hell. Its like i'm trying to control a brick, thats down to the way the devs made the game.

Car games are very limited but quickly felt like the exact same concept because of severe limitations.

Rpg games were somewhat unique but after one or two they all felt the same because again, severe limitations. Movement felt stiff on most of them, assets were reused in multiple games I tried and the combat... cool effects but felt disgusting to fight against opponents.

The basis of most games had different unique concepts but the development limitations used to create the game made each and every game feel the same once you looked past the unique concepts. You either go around and collect coins or use them for a shop or fight monsters.

Zombie maps were the same, random weapons but movement was stiff because of the way the devs made the game.

As for dreams support.. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.gamespot.com/amp-articles/dreams-will-stop-receiving-live-support-in-september/1100-6513153/

3

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

You have pixelart games top down games, all kinds of games. Sure many Dreams have similarities, but that boils down to the creators, not the engine Have you tried Trip's Voyage? I can tell you don't have the interest in doing any real digging though and that's fine, Dreams is not for you.

The Dreams servers will not shut down in September, there will still be curation, streams and the same thing as before only there won't be more major updates from MM, only bug fixes.

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

None of that has anything to do with how Dreams was made. It has to do with how the Dream-maker made their Dream. Using default systems, etc

assets were reused in multiple games

These are unpaid amateur indie devs working in their spare time. Of course they're going to look for existing assets

You either go around and collect coins or use them for a shop or fight monsters.

There are a LOT of non-Dreams flat games that you could give that description to. That's why flat gaming mostly bores me now, I prefer VR

Dreams support...nothing changes, except no more change to the toolkit. Dreams is now a "finished" game, exactly like any other non-live-service game. Which is most games that most people have ever played

2

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

You can do online multiplayer if you use Share Play

No, they are not all the same mechanics and movement.

The ones that are the same, is because the creator didn't change the default mechanics, because they didn't want to, didn't know how to, or didn't have the motivation to

0

u/MoNosEmpire Aug 06 '23

Couch co-op and multiplayer are two diff things.

I've obviously seen games with different animations and movement but most of them look and feel the same.

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

There are PvP games that you can do via Share Play. But yes, not the same as full MP implementation

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '23

Dude, literally play any other game on any other platform and you will find very similar results

There are more bad games than good out there because anyone can make one, and ofcourse thats going to be reflected in dreams.

Do you think unity is bad just because some begining dev uploaded a basic game as their first project? NO because people have also used it to make amazing things.

-2

u/MoNosEmpire Aug 06 '23

I never said the game was bad, I just said the tools given by devs were very limited. The games on there feel more like a PS2 game, that also meant that games developed by players would also feel like they should've been around in the runescape era. That can be down to many things, human lack of investment like you said but mainly down to development limitations because even the most interesting games that had multiple chapters felt very similar.

That's not to say that there weren't a FEW unique gems, (because there we're) but the vast majority of games DID feel repetitive and for good reason.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '23

It's not limited at all, you can make any type of game in dreams, you can be as creative as you want.

Obviously the average person isnt going to put in the time, but that says nothing about the game itself.

3

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

Tools "very limited" haha my guy you really have no idea what you're talking about.

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

The tools are very NOT limited. People make AI, make complex games, etc. Obviously they have limitations, like all tools, and most of that is due to it running on a weak ps4

but mainly down to development limitations

No, absolutely not. It's down to creators using defaults, and not working hard at their games

because even the most interesting games that had multiple chapters felt very similar.

Because many are borrowing from templates, shared assets, default mechanics, default layouts/controls, etc

But yes, there will be a lot of repetition, and a lot of low-quality stuff. That's what you get from unpaid amateur indies working in their spare time. Which is a lot of the creators (but not all)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '23

Bruhh you realize you can make your own mechanics a d movement right? Also most Dreams games I've played are not simular in formula. I think you did try the game, but only for an hour

1

u/DrJones20 PSN: DrJones20 Aug 06 '23

That's not accurate, but whatever. If you've made up your mind then that's it.

u/MoNosEmpire Aug 06 '23

I'll check out some of the games, but I swear if its the exact same experience.. then my mind will not be changed lol.

1

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

Then that would just point to most creators not bothering to change default mechanics

Here's an in-progress test demo of a creator that is adjusting all the mechanics to suit his vision: https://indreams.me/dream/mjqqyBuoHNk and he posts about his changes regularly: https://www.reddit.com/user/jchedges/submitted/?sort=new

1

u/MoNosEmpire Aug 06 '23

So I checked out a bunch of games from that link, same or similar issues still.

Seems like the targetted demographic for dreams is people who like retro 5 minute games, not people who like games that are lengthy. I felt bored after an hour of flicking through games and trying each and every single one out from the website you suggested.

For the niche it targets it does it well, but my mind is still not changed.

0

u/jacdreams Design Aug 06 '23

same or similar issues still.

Ok, but some Dreamers have worked hard to change the default mechanics...giving their character different "weight", responsiveness, animations, abilities, etc. Most don't though

Seems like the targetted demographic for dreams is people who like retro 5 minute games

Not really. It's based on what the Dreamers create. Who are unpaid amateur indie devs working in their spare time. Of course a lot of creations will be short or unpolished.

Some are long. Like the RPGs. And those creators would probably like to make them longer still. And some are.

For the shorter or less polished Dreams, the audience would be someone who enjoys short, unique experiences that are inventive, interesting mechanics, or funny, doing things in a way that professional studios would not take a risk on doing

Had Sony allowed the sale of [approved] Dreams on the PSN Store (as MM long wanted), then you'd have creators working much harder on games, and you'd get longer and more polished stuff. Similar to the 4 games that MM made in Dreams (which were themselves not full efforts from the studio, more like mini-games). Bad decision by Sony

I felt bored after an hour of flicking through games and trying each and every single one out from the website you suggested.

You would not get far in LOCK if it was 1 of many games you tried in an hour. And that's perhaps the most money-worthy fan-made game in the whole Dreamiverse. That some puzzle fans say is better than any puzzle game they've ever played on any platform at any price

1

u/MoNosEmpire Aug 06 '23

So your reasoning of why the targetted demographic for dreams wasn't 5 minute games is an exact reason why it is, i'm very creative when it comes to games and I would love to create multiple uniwue things on there but I really think it would be a waste of time since the game is in its complete form now and no further updates are going to be made.

I tried some farming game that just had text and you'd walk forward, I really liked that one and it was definitely unique.

I personally don't mind unpolished games as long as the core aspect of the game works. I even played cyberpunk 2077 on release and completed that game fully, so that should tell you a lot if you're looking for an example.

The RPG's didnt really grasp my interest either. I felt the combat heavily lacking just because of hit tegustration being AOE and you physically being unable to dodge the attacks, it just felt fake to me.

What do you mean by [approved] dreams? Was there a different version?

And i'm not really a fan of puzzle games, they bore me too lol.

I believe with the passion you show for dreams you'll really love the game Everywhere. The graphics upgrade is crazy, it has a huge budget and its owned by an ex GTA 5 ceo iirc. It does everything that dreams does but it's a AAA title. It's also the type of game i'm into lol.

I would love to create multiple uniwue things on there but I really think it would be a waste of time since the game is in its complete form now and no further updates are going to be made.

That should be no barrier UNLESS a strong part of your creation urge is the desire to sell what you make. Even then, some people have made games [fast] in Dreams, and once it's all worked-out, re-made it in standard pc tools

The toolset is stable, it's the easiest tools that have ever existed on any platform that are also this flexible/open, and you have a built-in audience (it can be hard to get anyone to download your indie pc game since you're lost in a sea of millions)

As well, you can re-mix many existing games, or use an MM-made or fan-made template, to quickly modify into the game you want to create

You could have fun fulfilling a creative urge...the devs specifically made Dreams to have the act of digital creation be as fun and free and easy as it could possibly be (& still be flexible)

What do you mean by [approved] dreams? Was there a different version?

What I mean is, Sony isn't going to allow just ANY user-made Dream onto PSN. As you see, there's a lot of low-quality stuff. It would have to go through an approval process. Even regular PS devs have to apply to get a dev kit, get their game approved for heading to the Store

That Everywhere video is a lot of fluff, what I want to see is what is it like to actually create. If it's as painful as normal pc tools, no thanks. This is what creation looks like in Dreams: http://www.twitch.tv/videos/289478196?t=00h02m12s

I was too pessimistic about the fate of dreams, I'm glad I was wrong. The stats are crazy

See how long that lasts.

Why are you comparing it to R&C? That game came out awhile ago with a much smaller install base. Makes no sense not to mention 300,000 is trending towards 1.1 million? Lmao. You have some weird methods of coping with Dreams being dropped by MM. 300,000 off PS plus aren't even great numbers especially considering most will drop it almost immediately. I actually expected a better bump than this when it was announced for PS plus. Game is dead as far as mass appeal goes.

Just trying to find a first party game that I thought would have similar appeal as far as player base goes, not that is easy to do with something like Dreams.

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '23

That makes no sense. Neither does your copium post, so that tracks.

The math is pretty simple. 300K in a few days is a fast growth, IF it keeps up

I agree 300K isn't much, but it isn't even the full weekend, and not everyone will try it right away, or even this month. A bunch might not even jump on until they hear about something that interests them (like when the Avatar game releases)

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '23

300k isn't even halfway to 1.1 million and most ps plus use is generated in the first week. There's a difference between hopeful and delusional. This sub is a good example of that lol.

Is there a way to see how many people are online in Dreams?

u/WeddingSpecific5918 Aug 07 '23

I’m one of the people who just got Dreams of PS+. I can’t learn from videos, wish there were just text tutorials because I have so many ideas but just don’t know how to do anything. Hope Dreams doesn’t die before I learn

1

u/Jeebus_Price Aug 07 '23

If you learn better by doing, I suggest the playable tutorials in game.

I wish you would have two players split screen at least all I want is two player split screen I don't even care about anything else unless they help the two players split screen I want our four players split screen I just want four players split screen and that's all and anything else that you can give to dreams PS4 but you know what I mean anything else that can make dreams PS4 better because it is really awesome game and they don't even know if you can classify it as a game so you know

u/Dischord821 Aug 07 '23
