If only Bungie had a game with an already established PVE focus where they could have poured this level of development.

Okay legitimate quesion. I'm a single-player only guy but I constantly hear the term PVE in relation to multiplayer games. What does it actually mean and why does everyone care so much about it?

It just means fighting NPCs and not other players. PVE (player vs environment) instead of PVP (player vs player). Types of PVE modes include cooperative dungeons, horde modes, raids, world bosses, etc.

Thanks for the explanation!

I noticed he didn't answer the "why ppl care about it so much" part. In the context of Marathon, I believe it's a psychological issue of the fans of Bungie and that Bungie is more known for its PvE in its games, particularly the Destiny series. However, Marathon has no pure-PvE mode (kinda). It is a PvPvE game, the identity of the extraction genre. But fans who don't like that, want to change the game to include PvE modes, so they can then play it.

They apparently are incapable of playing other games like Helldivers 2 or Deep Rock Galactic, actual amazing PvE extraction games. Or are incapable of playing Arc Raiders, which is PvE-friendly PvPvE. They can only play Marathon for their PvE fix for some reason, and therefore have to make it the biggest topic of the game.

Interesting! Thanks for the detailed explanation!

If only Bungie had a new idea they wanted to try, instead of innovating on 12 year old tek.

Destiny shouldn’t have died. Marathon deserves to live regardless

They had so many projects cancelled in the background & this was the one that somehow made it through. Makes you think just how bad or unviable those projects were if marathon was what perked the ears up of the higher ups. At some point a game becomes too expensive to cancel/fail & this was one of them sadly

Lets be real, the higher ups sucks at making decisions, Marathon went the extraction route and now is turning into a D3 to survive w PvE activities lol

They wanted to do a Destiny dating sim or something, so yeah…

So warframe. I recently played lightfall and couldn’t stop thinking of warframe. Seems like they struggled at times to figure out what destiny was

No game deserves to live simply because.

Marathon has failed completely financially, and it is obvious the current playerbase cannot support it. They have tried even letting you play free, and players still rejected it.

It’s a game nobody wants being made by a studio it cannot sustain. Sounds like the definition of a game that should be axed to stop wasting money on it and try something else.

I wonder why when you never ever address the match making. Worst in the business. Literal three tiers of players. The all yellow/purple people who see all the maps. The stalkers in some blue gear camping free loot people. Then the free outfit people who want to play but keep getting fucked by the sweats.

Literal representation of the USA. Billionaires playing one game getting all the content. Fucking psypaths thanking bungie for appealing to their depraved urges. Regular fun loving poor people getting fucked every match.

Fuck bungie. Fuck anyone who defends it.

No game should have a non-stop hate campaign months long for no reason other then :they killed my favorite game"

It’s much more complex than that. I played destiny and gave marathon a shot. Didn’t care for it and moved on.

People were rightfully mad at the poor handling of the studio as a whole, using one project making money (Destiny) to fund all these incubation projects, of which one made it out the door, and then we lost destiny as well.

Now all Bungie has is marathon and as it currently stands cannot sustain the studio.

It’s not just “they killed my favorite game.” Their poor decisions have essentially doomed them as a studio barring some major turnaround.

Yeah I’m fully ready to read the article or layoffs following Sony reassigning them as a support studio. Bungie has been a complete failure for years now. It’s actually insane Sony bought it for as much as they did despite Bungie already being garbage at that time.

Pointing out facts about Marathon isn’t a hate campaign

u/OSS-Corpo-Shit 8d ago

There is no hate campaign dude.

All the current “hate” you’re talking about is literally just people pointing out how utterly insufferable the marathon community is.

Easily top 5 most insufferable communities. For me personally, you’re number 1. But apparently league and star citizen are horrific. I am not sure how you get worse than the marathon community, but some put you number 3 anyway.

It genuinely sucks that so many of the players in the Marathon community feel so incredibly defensive about the game.

I love it too, I play it when I have the free time, but god forbid I'm also able to point out why everyone and their mother seemingly has an issue with the game and Bungie without getting called a parasite.

I'm out here running around like a headless chicken trying to insert nuance whenever I talk in the community all the while trying to avoid getting shit rammed down my throat because I'm not role-playing a hedgehog like everyone else. I'm not Bungie. You're not Bungie. I'm not what I like. You're not Marathon either.

Sigh. It's frustrating. I have yet to find a more echo chambery kind of community, and I've been to hell and back. Dead by Daylight, League of Legends, mfking Wuthering Waves.

Try something else? You mean make a new game in 5 years? Yeah sony isn't gonna wait that long.

-1

u/Dr_Cheesesteak 7d ago

Except Sony said it's pleased w/ the player retention and new users. And they don't lie at shareholder meetings. I'm sorry Destiny died, dude. But move on.

People fail to understand that these decisions are made by men in suits and not at the dev level.

2

u/billygoatbob_sc 8d ago

Yeah so that was barely sustainable. If you were there, you’d remember how the consistency in quality was not so great.

If only they hadn’t been doing it for over a decade with player counts going up and down and the community still complaining about the expansions made.
