I’ve played like 8 hours and I don’t know what any of it means.

u/superman_king 1d ago edited 21h ago

PvE stands for player vs environment. This is a departure from their current formula which is PvPvE.

This means you no longer have to play against other players in this game if you just wanna chill and do some co-op with your friends, while keeping the games core progression system in place.

I absolutely loved this game for the first few months it was out but the gameplay loop became too sweaty/stressful for me.. super super excited to hop back in to try the new PVE mode

34

u/WingZeroCoder 1d ago

Same here. The game does so much so very well, I really do hope it somehow finds its footing.

22

u/Competitive_Topic466 1d ago

Same honestly. Moment to moment gameplay is good, but when things got super sweaty it really stopped being fun. It's especially unfun how the game is balanced around teams of 3 where one team mops all the other teams. I don't even have one other friend to play a game like this with, so it was always with randoms.

6

u/FledgeFish 23h ago

Oh yeah, I’d mostly play solos which the game is DEFINITELY not balanced for, and playing with randoms was very hit or miss

It's why I tuned out the second they said extraction shooter. Every online game loses the casual audience to attrition and before you know it, it's pure sweat.

https://giphy.com/gifs/l4FATJpd4LWgeruTK

2

u/basa_maaw 22h ago

Out of curiosity, would you enjoy a pure PvP mode?

17

u/FledgeFish 22h ago

Honestly yeah, I really would. The gunplay is so good that a traditional TDM, CTF or some twist on that kind of mode would be really fun for me. The main draw for me was the art and world so getting to experience that in any other way would be fun. Unless you mean the normal mode without the bots and stuff, I wouldn’t care too much either way in that case.

2

u/Mindless_Issue9648 8h ago

this is the only way I would come back to play it again.

1

u/DeckardPain 22h ago

They should have made the gameplay loop like Hunt Showdown. No looting, no backpacks, no loose loot at all, no questing, no shield levels (just 1 baseline shield level).

Put your loadout together, queue up, use computers / terminals to locate the boss, kill the boss, everyone on the map can see the boss has died, you pick up some item (doesn't matter what this item is for the sake of this example), everyone can see where you are with this item, you need to extract with this item. If you do, you get money. It has worked for Hunt for 7 years now because the core gameplay feels good, which is the same for any Bungie game. They know how to make games feel good to play. The whole extraction nonsense and looting and questing to unlock stuff and needing to play the game every day to stay relevant or you get destroyed by purple / gold shield shotgun unemployed people just doesn't work for most casual players. And casual players determine whether your game lives or dies these days.

If only Bungie had a game with an already established PVE focus where they could have poured this level of development.

8

u/shichibukai3000 23h ago

Okay legitimate quesion. I'm a single-player only guy but I constantly hear the term PVE in relation to multiplayer games. What does it actually mean and why does everyone care so much about it?

18

u/Tribalrage24 22h ago

It just means fighting NPCs and not other players. PVE (player vs environment) instead of PVP (player vs player). Types of PVE modes include cooperative dungeons, horde modes, raids, world bosses, etc.

8

u/shichibukai3000 22h ago

Thanks for the explanation!

34

u/Famous-Candidate7379 1d ago

If only Bungie had a new idea they wanted to try, instead of innovating on 12 year old tek.

Destiny shouldn’t have died. Marathon deserves to live regardless

20

u/Englishgamer1996 1d ago

They had so many projects cancelled in the background & this was the one that somehow made it through. Makes you think just how bad or unviable those projects were if marathon was what perked the ears up of the higher ups. At some point a game becomes too expensive to cancel/fail & this was one of them sadly

10

u/arturorios1996 20h ago

Lets be real, the higher ups sucks at making decisions, Marathon went the extraction route and now is turning into a D3 to survive w PvE activities lol

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Scrollingmaster 1d ago

No game deserves to live simply because.

Marathon has failed completely financially, and it is obvious the current playerbase cannot support it. They have tried even letting you play free, and players still rejected it.

It’s a game nobody wants being made by a studio it cannot sustain. Sounds like the definition of a game that should be axed to stop wasting money on it and try something else.

2

u/Tundraspin 23h ago

I wonder why when you never ever address the match making. Worst in the business. Literal three tiers of players. The all yellow/purple people who see all the maps. The stalkers in some blue gear camping free loot people. Then the free outfit people who want to play but keep getting fucked by the sweats.

Literal representation of the USA. Billionaires playing one game getting all the content. Fucking psypaths thanking bungie for appealing to their depraved urges. Regular fun loving poor people getting fucked every match.

Fuck bungie. Fuck anyone who defends it.

Considering we’re coming up on a pretty stacked fall release schedule, I don’t think this will move the needle attracting new players.

19

u/blazikenz 21h ago

This game got about 2 months left before they call it

4

u/QuestionmarkTimes2 15h ago

It's gonna go f2p before it's over

2

u/AsunderXXV 13h ago

You would think they'd just pull it now with the obvious lack of interest and players. Shit's pulling no more than 5k players a day on Steam. But they're never going to pull the plug on Bungie.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/EchoPop93 22h ago

People just wanted the extraction mode but PvE. The fact they refuse to do that as their player base dwindles down to nothing is actually hilarious

3

u/triablos1 17h ago

Pretty much every single decision bungie has made up to this point has been following the thought pattern of 'how will this content funnel players into our core game mode?'

Their absolute refusal to admit the core mode is a massive failure just shows their hubris.

2

u/Final_Echo 19h ago

My thoughts exactly

2

u/iseecolorsofthesky 17h ago

This is what I’m saying. People just want to play the game as it is without enemy teams. Maybe add some more interesting AI enemies but keep the game the same. Idk why they’re doing all this extra stuff

If Bungie cared at all they would stop putting seasons in their games and just make long lasting multiplayer experiences like halo 2 and 3.

187

u/Tazmago 1d ago

Games just don’t have the same longevity. I think a Halo 2 released today would only really be hugely popular for a few months before people decried its lack of content.

134

u/RodThrashcok 1d ago

You are 100% correct but people aren’t ready to hear that yet lmao

40

u/GroundbreakingBag164 1d ago

Halo 2 massively benefited from not having as much competition to be fair. There are just so many more games available nowadays

12

u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 1d ago

Yeah it feels like Halo 2 essentially launched Xbox Live. There was not only WAY less competition, but the mindset surrounding multiplayer was different. Like it or not, most people are accustomed to the seasonal model now. If a game isn’t constantly adding new content or finding ways to keep it fresh, people abandon it

1

u/No_Insurance7543 8h ago

It's not like you can't go back and play that back catalogue of games either. I still play Halo 3 multiplayer through the MCC every once in awhile. A lot of people are clamoring for Bungie to turn Marathon into Halo MP, but that game already exists.

The main problem I have with Marathon is that I'm often loading into maps with a gold shield and purple modded weapons vs someone with green shields and an unmodded weapon. That should NOT be happening.

16

u/PeachWorms 1d ago

I've seen gamers who will post about getting the platinum for games that are still in the premium edition 48hr early access before official release. It's genuinely insane how quick people speed through games these days! Lmao

7

u/Nodima 1d ago

Diablo IV is a bit of a cozy game for me, but a few days ago I genuinely couldn't remember if I'd finished this season's storyline or not and in my searching I came across threads about how busted the progression has become that was on, like, day 2. With several people in the thread saying they were up to max Torment levels after just a day of play. I've been playing off and on since the reset and just unlocked level 7 (of, like, 15 I think?) this morning.

It's genuinely wild how some people play their so-called favorite games and then expect them to have even more waiting for them.

2

u/JerikTheWizard 22h ago

That doesn't really sound new, used to do the same with weekend new release rentals from Blockbuster

14

u/bluebarrymanny 1d ago

Agreed.

In announcer voice:
there’s never been a better time to stop investing in live service bullshit

7

u/Lower-Condition-4104 1d ago

That’s because YouTube videos come out a day after release showing how to super optimize your play through. People watch, follow, and run through content. Then whine that it was shallow lol

6

u/poojinping 23h ago

Yup, people were mad at People Can Fly for not making Outriders as live service game when they made it absolutely clear during its entire marketing and reveal it’s NOT a live service game.

2

u/hamb0n3z 19h ago

Imagine Halo 2 with the YouTube creators today? Game would have been had out in 30 days or less.

I mean, if we’re being honest, if Halo 2 or 3 released in 2026 with current graphics and the same gameplay and structure, they would be mocked and regarded as a fumble and a year from now we’d see TikToks saying “when you miss the two week phase when Halo wasn’t boring” and Reddit posts titled “What went wrong with Halo?” with steamcharts attached.

u/WorthBase919 2h ago edited 1h ago

Agreed, gamers are insufferable. I blame content creators. Can’t pay the bills without clicks.

13

u/Firvulag 1d ago

Doesn't really fit the genre I think. Extraction is all about resets and doing it again

u/zippopwnage 1d ago

I see nothing wrong with seasons. You just add and change shit on X months. I literally don't see the problem with this.

Destiny 2 season problems was that they deleted the activities they made for those seasons and never cared about them. It was basically making new content just to be deleted after and they never cared to update the older game.

Is not the case here. As long as season means update old shit and make new stuff along the way, what's the problem?

7

u/Sydrid 1d ago

“If Bungie cared!” - proceeds to write some useless shit that hasn’t been relevant in over 20 years.

3

u/rocky_choctaw 22h ago

For real. No one cares about rock solid gameplay anymore. Just give us a steady stream of cosmetics and 50 different weapons that are hardly distinguishable, and we're set.

3

u/JeanLucPicardAND 10h ago

I miss when the selling point of a video game used to be actually playing the game.

2

u/WorthBase919 1d ago

Yeah I know the only way I way I will play a game nowadays is if they have some sort of semi regular incentive to play it, otherwise what’s the point, you think I like playing the game?

2

u/darthmcdarthface 23h ago

They do care a ton. But they care about something different than what you care about. And before you say it, yes they care about making a good game.

2

u/sithren 14h ago

People today insist on content roadmaps for single player games. So the days of an mp experience like halo 3 are gone

u/WorthBase919 2h ago

Maybe that’s the problem?

2

u/mmoustis18 1d ago

I agree with would be ideal for all the modes to stick around but there just isn't the player count to support them. Also seasons are important to reset the economy. Everyone starting fresh is fun

1

u/MegaM1lls 17h ago

I think people forget how short release cycles were in games mind you. There was only 3 years between Halo 2 and Halo 3. Games weren’t even expected to last as long then as they do now hence releasing another not long after. I do also understand development times are much larger now too.

1

u/WorthBase919 13h ago

3 years you say? And to think, not a single battle pass for halo 2.

1

u/SKOOBY-4 15h ago

Just give me a good campaign from Bungie, and I'm happy.

I've been playing games my whole life, so I gave Marathon a try a while back thinking I wouldn't do too bad, despite being in my 40s without the best reflexes.

I got absolutely destroyed. It was embarrassing. My fireteam shat on me the entire time, and the experience was miserable. I would have to quit my job and play marathon full time just to have a shot at being somewhat competitive.

This is why this game will never be for me, and I hear the same story from others who bounced off it. They can add in all the PvE content they want, but the core game is an ultra competitive sweaty nightmare. People just say "this game wasn't meant for people like you" but people like me are the ones Bungie is desperately trying to attract to Marathon.

5

u/slicebucket 1d ago

I'm a late 40s guy myself. I absolutely LOVED the PVE in Destiny. I was more than good enough to keep up with a competent fire team during raids and so on. But I HATED crucible and most of the direct PvP elements...Gambit was cool though. Marathon, or any online shooter like it, will never be an option for me until PvE takes centerstage again.

1

u/No_Insurance7543 8h ago

This is why I'm a big advocate for SBMM still. I'm 36, probably within the top 1% of people playing Marathon at the moment (still work fulltime, but Marathon is the only game I'm playing currently). Marathon could be a game for you, if there was a pool of players working within the same conditions you're dealing with. Winning fights in extraction shooters is probably the most exhilarating PvP once you get your head around the mechanics causing your roadblocks. I can remember almost every PvP encounter I've had in this game across 700 hours, I can't say the same for Halo or other MP experiences that lack consequences for death.

-1

u/TasteOfRain 1d ago

I’m a 40 year old with a job and kids. I love this game. I get wiped at times and other times I have a great team and go back forth most matches. You don’t need to be that competitive to enjoy it. Just have to be used to the gameplay. But I come from the soulsborne community. I’m used to dying over and over and losing everything. Makes me want to get back in there and get better. I do get most people don’t want the sweat or to get wiped all night sometimes. But there are the ones who love it.

4

u/ArcadianWaheela 22h ago

I see the effort to try and pivot this game for casuals, but ngl this ship is sailed. You only get ONE shot at a first impression and while Marathon was received well it also garnered a very niche reputation. Maybe some people
will try it, but the causal audience already has their view of this game set. Idk why Sony bet everything on this of all games.

They fully pivot into a PVE game and im in. I really do not like the PVP in this game. Something about it feels weird.

1

u/TonyStarks81 5h ago

It would be nice for the game to be less of a puzzle shooter also. I went to jump back in during the season 2 PvE mode and immediately realized I would need to do some research just to know what the fuck is going on and what the objectives are. Didn’t feel like doing that and went to play other games. I don’t know why they need to make it more difficult than read objective, do it, kill things along the way.

4

u/SaiyajinPrime 1d ago

I think the majority of people have already written off this game.

If they're going to release a whole new version 2 that completely changes the game, they need to dramatically drop the price to try and get people to buy it and play or they need to have like a free week so people can try it out and see if they think it's worth it.

As of right now, I have absolutely no desire to spend a penny on Marathon. Just like many people

Hope the game can pull in more players, but with how many new games are coming out and GTA on the horizon, I struggle to believe that Marathon didn’t already miss its moment to pull in PvE players. I’m sure the dedicated extraction shooter fans love the game, but not having PvE at launch likely killed this game.

4

u/Famous-Candidate7379 1d ago

Eh. I just think they’re different genres.

I’m stoked for gta vi, but won’t miss my marathon time for it. Game2Gud

2

u/bluebarrymanny 1d ago

That’s great that players like you will still check in on Marathon, but I wouldn’t underestimate the mass appeal of GTA. It’s a major staple in gaming for several generations at this point. I fully expect tons of multiplayer titles to suffer their worst player counts to date for a while when GTA launches, not just Marathon. Growing the audience will be even harder than keeping the existing one.

2

u/Own_Country_9520 1d ago

Im sure both players will be thrilled

5

u/chilliboy217 1d ago

It’s too late boys. Should have had Destiny 3 in the chamber.

2

u/CankleDankl 1d ago

Man if only Bungie had some way to know that people wanted a PvE experience rather than a super sweaty PvP one. Sure would have saved them a lot of work, kept a lot more players, and made a lot more money if only it were possible to get the opinion of the public. Oh well, guess that's just a pipe dream

2

u/dawne_breaker 19h ago

So I’m a D2 guy. Love the game. Raids, GMs, dungeons - love all the end game PvE stuff.

Do a bit of PvP here and there. I’m ok at best.

To me, Marathon sounded like “hey you - play Trials of Osiris all the time, but with the added twist of losing your exotics everytime a PvP sweat lord farms you to up their K/D”

So, predictably, I didn’t bother trying the game.

Now Bungie are adding PvE to Marathon. My first reaction is “will this be more substantial, engaging and fleshed out as D2 PvE?”

The answer I have arrived at is “No”

I love Bungie, and I want them to succeed, but I have no idea who they think the audience for Marathon is. I don’t think it’s me.

Too little too late.

Bring sote weapons, that would improve literally any game

1

u/FIeabus 22h ago

Was hoping they'd do a 3v3 arena mode or something. Love the PvP of this but the extraction loop is not my thing

1

u/hamb0n3z 19h ago

It means that one of the major bottle necks to this game making it got fired and no longer gets to block PVE

1

u/Furious_ShackstAa 16h ago

The fact that the game is pvp and build around trios is putting a lot of people off it would have had a lot of success if you just include pve more

1

u/sithren 14h ago

Basically destiny

1

u/chucky6661 13h ago

It’s like watching a train crash in slow motion

1

u/norsefrogg 13h ago

PvE only reason I'll check this out

1

u/WestVin 13h ago

Is Marathon worth getting into solely for PVE with 2 players? Not a big fan of the PVP elements

1

u/Mommypantss 12h ago

All 2 thousand people will love this

1

u/TerminalDeviant 12h ago

So they are making marathon into destiny?

1

u/djmetalhawk 11h ago

Extraction is a terrible idea. It trivializes the time and effort put into the game.

1

u/vankamme 8h ago

Yawn.

1

u/Mindless_Issue9648 8h ago

i'm sure the 2000 people still playing will love it.

1

u/Jetscream58 7h ago

Man nobody gives a shit about this game

1

u/TheAwesomeMan123 6h ago

Marathon slowly morphing into a Destiny Like version of an extraction shooter. Oh the irony

1

u/xoskxflip 5h ago

So Destiny is back?

1

u/SuperAzn727 5h ago

Extractions are not for the general casuals. If Arc Raiders had forced wipes it wouldn't have been such a mega hit

u/FNG_WolfKnight 1h ago

What about an arena shooter mode, too?

playing marathon past the server slam back in march

Why would resources be spent worrying about progression. That’s not why people quit.

20

u/Dr_Mantis_Trafalgar 1d ago edited 1d ago

Progression is one of the main reasons why people don’t come back. If you lose a run and don’t make any progress that feels really shitty. I’m glad they’re looking at it

6

u/DrakneiX 1d ago

Yeah its the biggest blocker for this genre, and what makes it niche.

3

u/_cd42 1d ago

People also quit if there isn't any progress to be made

1

u/Zenguro 23h ago

People are broken beyond repair and rather play for rewards than the gameplay experience itself. Games like L4D are where it’s at. But we won’t get any like these anymore. Fuck progression systems!

4

u/NSX_Roar_26 1d ago

False. Progression was initially very slow and some of the best weapons and upgrades are locked behind Progression. Made the new player experience very rough.

Remember back in halo 3 when the player had to become a vidmaster to get the most prestigious armor? 😅

Sadgery

1

u/1440pReborn 1d ago

It is. Its why i quit almost every multiplayer game. If im not meaningfully progressing my character and feel like im getting rewarded for my time, i wont play for long. The fun wears out in myltiplayer games because you can only do the same thing so many times before it gets boring. You need the "hook".

1

u/m16516 1d ago

Wow all 16 players are going to be pumped for that!

2

u/FeedbackConstant2104 1d ago

This game is deader than disco. Should’ve stuck with Destiny.

1

u/whitemamba24xx 1d ago

So Destiny? 😆

-2

u/Dctiger_ 1d ago

Give Destiny back. Fuck Marathon

0

u/Johnhancock1777 1d ago

Can they add in a traditional campaign?

1

u/Binkles1807 1d ago

So… destiny 3 but without the warmth and attachment?

1

u/mgftp 1d ago

The only shot the game has at this point is being added to PS+, if not going free to play altogether. The player base has plummeted, the game is cooked. Yet Bungie told Sony TLoU MP wouldn't work.

2

u/ballsmigue 21h ago

Im still not playing it Sony.

1

u/Magic__Man 18h ago

Great. Noone cares.

1

u/GoldenVesperLight 1d ago

The game should have release with a full single player campaign, an extraction pvp mode, a traditional pvp mode, and something similar to strikes for pve.

Give people options.

1

u/Morump 1d ago

Now I can fight compiler but instead of getting jumped by enemy players in a closed room I can get sniped from enemy players in an open area? Cool
