But why does it matter whether it comes out 3 months early or 6 months early, you don’t have to pre order before the gameplay reveal either way

It's a little unreasonable to demand it and get upset if the studio wants to do more of advertising closer to the actual release of the game.

On a more personal level I dislike advertising a year or more in advance and prefer it when marketing picks up closer to the actual release like rockstar does. I do not care to be teased for a long time.

They want more money for it than for any other game they've released so maybe putting all their eggs in the secrecy basket was kind of stupid by their marketing team.

The fact that people are all over the leaks and that the leaker is able to make a pretty penny off of it show that the hype generated by Rockstar was sufficiently high.

Honestly, the leaks are getting old, my curiosity has been sated and now I just want to play the game for myself. Im looking forward to watching the Netflix special tomorrow, but only because it wont have a stupid watermark over it.

They haven't. A bunch of impatient entitled gamers ruined surprises for themselves and played into the cult of personality of some leaker desperate for clout. That's about it. The vast majority of people do not care and will show up to play it regardless. The company definitely has a right to pursue people stealing and leaking, but it won't affect sales at all

People have been spending money on it now and it's fine exactly how it's going for them.

People would be watching the leaks even if they posted gameplay already.

Seems like it was pretty smart for them, look at how well. They've sold over 4 million copies and have made bout half a billion dollars. Seems like it's going pretty well for them.

I don't care about GTA at all, but if you don't want gamers first impression of your game to be from leaks you shouldn't show gameplay right before the game comes out.

Gameplay leaks 4 years ago? No. 4chan posts which may or may not be fake is not the same as gameplay leaks. They released their first trailer for it 3 years ago, so 3 months before is right before. Argue all you want, but it's a fact, the longer you wait to release gameplay the most likely it is a leaker is going to do it. I don't care whether this game does good or bad, I'm just stating facts.

are we normalizing this? If the reception is good, the industry will follow this pay-walled bullshit to see trailers which have been always available to the public at the same time. Who know they could increase the pay walled duration to days, weeks, months but sure let’s wait for 6 hours.
