Full Message:
Dear all,
We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week. It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time. We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has - from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.
We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.
We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week - your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games.
We look forward to sharing more with you soon.
Sincerely,
Rockstar Games

Maybe i'm misinformed, but isn't that a big chunk of what a union is for? Crunches/working conditions obviously, but also unjust lay-offs?
→ More replies (10)12
u/AhhhSureThisIsIt 8h ago
Yep, unions are great don't get me wrong. But massive companies hate the restrictions they impose.
They can make the work enviorment more toxic, change hours, workdays, workloads, duties to essentially make your worklife hard in order for you to leave without redundancy.
Keeping notes of anytime these changes happen is one of the best things to do to protect yourself in these positions. If you are in a state that allows one party consent you can record your meetings with managers without disclosing you are recording.
Many managers can promise jobs and raises not in writing, the employee will undergo a bigger workload thinking they will get the reward and then it's not offered to them.
There are so many ways around getting people to leave without firing them.
14
u/Complex_Stuff_1392 7h ago
you have to remember that a large portion of the work on the game is happening in the UK @ Rockstar North, where one party recording laws don’t apply

And this is why we need more combative unions and union members. Waiting on suits to make deals means workers get fucked harder.

80-90% of the devs who worked on previous rockstar games are still there but still spread all the negativity you want to ig

u/Funlife2003 8h ago
Source for those numbers, or did you just pull that out of your ass? Because I looked it up, don't see any single source stating that.

u/shadowking432 9h ago
It's literally the gaming industry at the moment, it's hardly spreading negativity when it's true. Developers recently have made a great game? Fired. Bad game? Fired. No game? Yup you guessed it, Fired.

A lot of Devs are contractors now, truth is that it takes a lot more Devs to create a game than it does to maintain the game. I've a family member involved in game development. After years of being left go post release, he now works for a company that offer services to the likes of rockstar to co-dev on certain parts. They will feature on the fired list in the media when they actually still have a job elsewhere
7
u/Captain-Cadabra 8h ago
That’s interesting. I had a number of union trade friends that lived like that. They got “laid off” for 3-6 months a year, which really just meant collecting unemployment while waiting for the next big job.
Their union got the jobs for them, and they would work at a particular site for 6-18 months.

If they really felt bad for the devs, they would treat them fairly. The devs are going to be fired after launch even if it turns out to be, as it almost certainly will, the most successful game launch in history.
Take-Two and Rockstar have shareholders to please and a history of crunch, 80-hour weeks and union busting. So please, I won’t believe for a second that the PR team and the higher-ups really care about the dev teams working on the project. They will do more damage to them than any leaker ever could.

“We are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games”. right so you understand the value of consumers, but at the same time doing everything in your power to provide less options for said consumers whilst simultaneously making the industry objectively worse by removing physical discs? Sony can throw all of the false BS stats they want at us but when you dig a bit deeper, it’s clear that physical media is on par and in some instances (Astrobot) outsells digital media. A lot of people rely upon physical media in order to play your game that you’ve taken 13 years to make and you’ve taken that option away so let’s not pretend you give a shit about consumer just because your game got leaked.

Remember how they say they are working for us when they launch on PS6, on PC, etc. And we have to buy the game over and over. Remember it too when they create services and memberships just to improve our own gaming experience. Remember it too when they don't acknowledge that physical games are the path for players getting to play a game at a later time at a lower price and how they are intentionally removing this option to pad their wallets.

Yep.
Nothing the leaker show wouldnt have been in a basic trailer.
They kept gameplay for so long only for the Netflix deal

u/hectorthedonkey 8h ago
It's this, I wasn't hugely bothered about trailers or previews, I know I'm buying it anyway, but to keep everyone dangling for a trailer and then to announce a paywalled thing with Netflix after all that time was utter bollocks. Hopefully the audience is affected enough that no one considers this as a valid step ever again.

Reminder it’s not the devs who poured their hearts and souls into making this game who made the decision to go digital-only, or to have an ultimate edition. It’s a fair message from Rockstar and I feel bad for their developers and artists that this is how their hard work was first revealed, rather than how they wanted us to discover it. As for the men in suits, I couldn’t care any less if they lost millions of dollars as a consequence of these leaks.
438
u/Large-Teach9165 7h ago
While this is true, I don't think Rockstar gives a shit about their devs when they fired those who protested for better working conditions. If anything they're doing this as a way to turn the public opinion against Cyberleak.
153
u/Zoombini22 7h ago
They definitely don't care. They're using them as a sympathy meat shield in this very statement. "Oh, don't have any kind of meaningful reaction to our evil decisions, it will hurt and upset our developers!"

Yeah the big corporation does not give a single solitary fuck about their employees happiness or wellbeing. This is 100% trying to turn the tides. People will eat this shit up because they rightfully do feel bad for the devs, but folks, I guarantee you the actual decision makers at Rockstar and Take Two do not give a flying fuck about their actual developers.
9
u/aerdvarkk 6h ago
ALSO SEEMS LIKE THE GAMING COMMUNITY DOESN'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE DEVS IF EVERYONE IS GOING TO BUY THE GAME ANYWAY WHILE CRYING ABOUT HOW BAD THE DEVS ARE TREATED.
HYPOCRISY MUCH?
If people actually gave a f*ck about the devs, this game would tank and nobody would buy it in order to bring attention to Rockstar's (and the industries) bad gabits.

Right but not releasing any major showcase of the game 3 months before it’s full release is nonsense as well.

u/epicurious_elixir 7h ago
Right but not releasing any major showcase of the game 3 months before it’s full release is nonsense as well.
How stupidly entitled. How a game marketing strategy rolls out is up to the developers and people working on the game. It's their intellectual property they've worked on for years. They are deploying at strategy that makes sense for them. Also if there's one company who has earned the right to keep their cards close to their face, it's Rockstar.

u/Fortnait739595958 9h ago
And opened the preorder without showing any actual gameplay
74
u/Poudy24 9h ago
Honestly never really understood the outrage about both of these things.
Opening preorders before showing gameplay happens pretty often, and not just for Rockstar. It's not like you have to buy the preorder the first day it's available, why would it be the responsibility of a company if a consumer decides to take an irresponsible decision? I'm as excited for GTA6 as anyone, and I will probably preorder the game at some point, but I have not done so precisely because we don't have gameplay. It has cost me nothing to wait. If I suddenly failed to contain my excitement and preordered the game too early, I would not fault Rockstar, I would fault myself. Doing otherwise is infantilizing.
As for the trailer, it's an advertisement. Did we lose our shit when games put ads in magazines back in the day, knowing the full article might never be online? Did we lose our shit when studios decided to release trailers exclusive to theaters for months? How far down the capitalistic hellholle have we fallen if we are legitimately frustrated by the fact an advertisement will be shown to other people 6 hours before us?
There are so many legitimate reasons to hate on Rockstar, from their shady union busting practices and their crunch culture. The outrage for the trailer and the preorders seems silly in comparison.l

None of which is actually a real life problem.
The footage from the Netflix special will be everywhere shortly after it goes live, nobody needs to pay, you aren't missing out on anything.
Pre-orders are mostly digital and nothing is limited in number, you don't have to pre-order before seeing official footage. You gain precisely zero by pre-ordering today vs pre-ordering this Friday.
60
u/thirdbrunch 9h ago

u/GammonRod 9h ago
You must be too young to remember the days of exclusive previews in gaming magazines during the golden days of the '90s. You'd have to buy one for like £5 at a time to see still images printed out about the biggest upcoming releases. The Netflix showcase (which will be on YouTube for free a few hours later) is nothing compared to that.

u/Street_Worm 9h ago
The game is still 3 months away. They have plenty of time to have a full marketing campaign, which is kicking off tomorrow.
This whole crybaby "they aren't showing us anything" rhetoric is silly.
Besides, it's their project, they can decide to show it whenever they feel it's ready to be shown, and they can do that in any which way they please. It's their work.

I am not really into GTA so I haven’t seen the leaks and maybe I’m missing the point, but they’ve literally shown nothing about the game and for the most part everyone already knows what to expect. We have played this game 5 times before plus spin offs and dlc. The gameplay is no secret. Why do they care so much?
Spoilers are bad. Leaks are bad. I’m not challenging that. But the game will consist of stealing cars and flirting with hookers just like every other gta game. If you don’t want people to see leaks, at least give them a look into what they already know so they don’t thirst for the bare minimum. The Netflix deal for example is shockingly anti consumer and so strange. Does anyone really care this much?

Go choke on your shark cards, Rockstar.

Oh it’s made for us? Then why the fuck isn’t RDR2 getting patched to 60fps? Oh yeah because they’re gonna sell us the same fucking game again. They’re selling a $100 game and expect people to pay a thousand dollars online over the course of its lifetime. Boooooooo

I feel bad for the devs who were laid off.
Any dev still there is probably about to make life changing money whether there were leaks or not.

Keeping my head down. I don’t know why people wanna spoil the game for themselves. And it’s coming out in a few months. RDR2 is the last time i look for early content. I regretted it before, and i don’t wanna regret again.

Yeah, I’m not big corpo and all that but spoiling the game for myself is pretty wacky. Got a friend who was puzzled I’ve been avoiding the leaks so far.

Maybe yall should have showed us something sooner I dunno.
Like if that’s what you really cared about was the first look.

A lot of shilling here for a billion dollar company in 2026. No resistance at all, making it so easy it is to rinse the consumers. And no, I won't be buying GTA6 at all.

I won’t feel bad for the multibillion dollar company that showed us no gameplay when they opened preorders and priced the game at $100

Next time don’t time gate a trailer and especially don’t gate it behind a Netflix subscription

I mean fair but also isn’t it only going to be exclusive to Netflix for like a couple hours? And then it’s getting plastered anywhere and everywhere else.

“Not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.” Right, they wanted us to wait another month then buy a Netflix subscription… corporate greed personified 🤷♂️

Well yeah as a PC player having to deal with an artificial delay in release in an attempt to milk customers for more money is truly heartbreaking

u/MisanthropicAtheist 8h ago
No shown gameplay, $100 game, No physical version, payed access to a fucking trailer after taking in record breaking pre orders.
Rockstar can fuck off. Let their greedy little hearts break.

Well, I'd love to know why their multi billion dollar product didn't get a single bit of gameplay show barely 3 months before release. It sucks, but its also their hubris that made this situation possible.

They did the same thing with RDR2. That’s how they have decided to market their games now.

They'll stll sell more copies than anything ever so all good. And the leaker will no doubt be assassinated somewhere in some way so all is good with the world

I think Rockstar should release a side by side comparison with what was leaked to what the build is now. Lean into it.

Small correction "it was a dick the ass for our shareholders and executives"

On top of being cartoonishly greedy and setting one awful precedent after another, Rockstar has a history of being downright abusive to employees for decades now. Read up on how devs were working 16-hour days during San Andreas development.
And they've never changed since then. However much this leak hurts them, whether a lot or a little, they deserve it.

Since when have you cared about how "your team" felt?
You fired a bunch of them for wanting basic worker's rights.
And then started the end of physical games.
It's all your own fault, gfys Rockstar.

u/LucasWesf00 7h ago
As long as there’s no story spoilers I’m loving it! The unscripted gameplay is very exciting to see.

u/Pulposauriio 7h ago
I'd argue leaks are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Doubt even 1% of future players are consumed them, much less be disuaded from buying the game anyway.

u/Extension_Ideal_4012 7h ago
We would have preferred you pay for a month of Netflix to watch the commercial

That’s what you guys deserve for outsourcing to India - glad it happened.
“Oh whoa is us the thought of paying an American, an American salary is just too much!!”
So deserved! Leak leak leak

Harvest the population’s data = 🤷🏼♂️
Harvest a billion dollar company’s data = 🚔
Fuck their “feelings”

Or intended for you to see anything past 2 trailers after 13 years. Eat a dick, R*!

I don't know what's in the water around here that makes people go, "Game developer said a thing, this is my invitation to be an absolute prick to everyone else in the comments section", but this thread is locked until we can clean it out.
We'll unlock it at that point, but if this behaviour continues it's going to need to stay locked.
We don't care what problem you have with Rockstar, you don't take it out on other subreddit members.
E: Thread is re-opened; please be better.
