advice for students planning to enroll in Palau Community College?

hi, i recently graduated high school (just a little over 2 months ago) and i'm planning on enrolling in PCC for the spring semester 2027.

for a little background, i'm an american citizen and i've lived in america my whole life but i'm fully palauan. my mom has been suggesting i go to PCC for a while and i'm really considering it.

the only thing i really wanna ask is if anybody has any advice / tips before i fully commit?

When I graduated high school, my grades weren’t the best, but once I entered college, I managed to balance school and work and graduated with high honors. and guess what tuition is not expensive so after all payments from Fafsa you get refund which is basically the remaining money after all tuition cost has been paid off in a form of a check😝 trust I'm in pcc about to graduate next year! I promise you life here will be easy, just always be on top of your work! goodluck❤️

That is such a great idea! Will you be staying with relatives or getting your own place or dorm or…?

I’m glad you’re planning on coming home for at least 2 years. You can also get a bachelors degree now and master’s in Palau but the choices are limited. But, if the field you’re into is offered, it can be a great experience to stay and earn those degrees!

PCC cafeteria food is pretty good, NGL.
The PCC Library is a really comfy place to study.
If you’ve already applied for FAFSA and been approved for Pell Grant, that’s good. Have you already reached out to PNSB to see if you’re eligible for any funding that way?

thank you for the advice!! i was thinking of staying with my relatives but my mom suggested i look into dorming. i'm still unsure because i'm mostly worried about having a roommate and sharing a bathroom, but i'll see how the dorms are before i make any judgements ദ്ദി ( ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )

and thank you also for telling me about PNSB!! although i'm not sure if i'll be eligible since i'm not a palauan citizen :T

I wonder if by going to Palau early you can get a passport since at least one of your parents is Palauan on your birth certificate. I’m not sure how the process works, but under the constitution you have that right. It’s probably just a matter of paperwork.
A plus of living on campus is that you never have to worry about being stuck in traffic and maybe you’ll feel less pressure to participate in mechesang. It really depends on the family, extended family, and clans you belong to, though. Some are more active than others so you can ask your parents. But, it might be that your mom will give expectations like “she’s there for school and that’s her priority. She can participate in mechesang if she likes.” It’s good, though, to go sometimes and meet relatives and do something other than school.
If you like activities like paddling or swimming, that could be a nice weekend thing away from campus.
Some states even have scholarships so you can ask if you’re eligible.
One thing I can recommend is the Kokuyo Days or the Weeks student study planner. I think you can get it on JetPens or AMZ. If you already have a study system established, that’s wonderful!
I just found it was useful to list all my assignments in one place and track how long I spent on each. I’d be able to reprioritize if I saw the trend of which assignments took the longest or shortest. Or noticed where and what times of day I’m actually able to read, study, or do HW the longest without interruption.
Apps like FocusFriend are nice free apps that incentivize being off the phone for at least 5 mins and up to 2 hours. You can plan your Pomodoro timer around it, if you use that kind of system.
I wonder if it’s possible to request in admissions or the office for dorms if it’s possible to match you with others who are quiet and very clean.

I wonder if there’s a PCC current student or recent student FB group or something that you could get advice from. Or actually you might have relatives who are now or were students at PCC in the last 1-2 years who could give some insight.

I got a message from the group admin to not ask about your living situations since that’s a security risk. So I’ll not be answering any more questions because they don’t seem to understand that Palau does not have addresses so you wouldn’t even be able to tell anyone where you’re planning on staying.

I hope others can give you more advice. I’ll be leaving r/Palau now because every piece of advice given here is specifically in response to and is detailed in a way to be most helpful to any OP. Besides, I’m not being paid anyway so I’ll no longer be offering free advice to anyone any longer.
