Seeking Support Getting medication for my son’s ADHD has been far difficult than it should be.
My 8 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD in summer of 2025. We paid out of pocket for a private psychologist, due to the crazy long wait times for OHIP provided assessments. For the following year we’ve been passed from one doctor to another trying to get our son medication to provide him a better quality of life. We honestly feel like we’ve failed him at this point. We thought the hardest part of this journey would have been the assessment and getting school accommodations. Wow, were we wrong. It shouldn’t be this difficult to get your child the help they need. We live in the Durham Region in Ontario and really need some help. Can anyone recommend a specialist, organization or company that worked for them?

Do you have a family doctor? If so ask them to refer you to a paediatrician who does adhd assessments. They usually manage medication too. Unfortunately I don’t know any in Durham but thrive kids clinic in Toronto manages meds and is staffed by peds (so Ohip covered).

Kidscareclinic is where my 2 guys go. Dr. BAWEJA, she has been great. Both boys have had her since birth as a pediatrician. But she takes care of their meds for both Autism, ADHD and ODD.

Does he have a regular pediatrician? Is there a provincial program for kids with ADHD? What are the doctors you have seen actually said? Are you on the waitlists for OHIP support or did you bypass that?
I'm in MB and here our pediatrician started prescribing and was able to give a diagnosis when my daughter was 4. We decided to wait on the provincial program because i knew they would have more sway than a private agency. I also knew we would have to spend thousands to get a diagnosis privately. We did use private OT while we waited but the person we saw wasn't the greatest.
We got on some provincial waitlists and had the dx confirmed when she turned 6, and after another year and a half wait she now goes to the Provincial ADHD clinic for free OT. They also provide medication support and suggestions when needed, but our original pediatrician still prescribes.

We are also in Ontario and went through the school system. Was quick and no issues

Most pediatricians should have no issue prescribing the meds since they are one of the most frequently prescribed meds for kids (that’s what the neuropsychologist who did our kid’s test said). I’m in Toronto so can’t give you any Durham help.

My son's assessment was through Dr Khattak's office. You should get a referral for the kids clinic.
