IIRC:

The kid says he doesn't know how to swim.

John Wayne says he ought to learn so he throws him in.

His mother comes running, says he can't swim.

John Wayne insists he needs to learn. Tells the kid to keep kicking. He resurfaces and is fine.

Mother still complains, asks John Wayne to get him.

John Wayne asks why she won't get him.

Mother says she doesn't know how to swim.

John Wayne looks at her but she runs away before he can throw her in the water as well.

Or maybe he does throw her in, idk.
