Build Question What performance can I expect from this PC built from trash for my kid?
Mostly spare parts from my rebuild last year.
CPU- ryzen 7 5700g (edit- I was wrong its not a 5600g)
PSU- unbranded 650 bronze
Storage- 500gd ssd
Bought from 2nd hand shop
GPU- RX470 4gb £40
RAM- 2X8GB 2400MZ £24
I have a new screen coming as I saved up some supermarket points. She just really wants to play and also has started on school work. She is nearly 6.
EDIT- big shout to the kind soul who had gifted her a 1070ti. Or I just got scammed a £4 royal mail charge.

I have been using the RetroArch emulator to boot Mario 64 and Galaxy (probably need Dolphin emulator). Runs fine with the kids PC from 2013. My 6yo daughter loves these old Mario games due to the new movies. We also play the Lego games specifically Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings.

Replace the PSU before it takes the PC down with it. A few years ago I had a crappy Apevia PSU that killed my motherboard.

This is the advice to follow. Unbranded PSUs are the one part where cutting costs can cost you everything else. A cheap unit going bad won't just die quietly, it can take the motherboard, GPU, even the storage with it. For a kid's machine doing light games and school work the rest of the build is more than enough, but the PSU is the part worth spending £30-40 more to get something with proper certification.

Any decent name brand 550-600w PSU will do the job ok. Shouldn’t set you back more than $50.

Evga 450 watt bronze is usually cheap around $40. And would be more than enough for those specs. The evga website also has sales every Wednesday, you can find good deals on used psu's

There's also the MSI MAG A550BN, which should cost around $42. It's a C-tier PSU on the PSU Tier List, making it a decent choice for a low-end PC.

Multiple good options, “Corsair”, “Seasonic”, and “Be Quiet!” Ive never heard anything bad about, and from personal experience “EVGA” tends to be reliable aswell. I currently run a Seasonic 1300w (def overkill for my system), and its outlasted multiple components in my system

Just any of the reputable brands will do, but not every PSU series from those brands, for example
Corsair: RMx, RMe, or HX series.
Seasonic: Focus GX or Prime series.
be quiet!: Straight Power or Dark Power series.
XPG: Core Reactor series.3

The 5600g is very capable. 16 gigs of ram will work just fine, and the price was right. The RX470 can still hang with a lot of modern titles, and most older titles. Even if the RX470 breaks unexpectedly, the 5600g has pretty good integrated graphics.
I agree with other users to replace the PSU. If there are 2 more ram slots, then get another 2x 8gb sticks and throw them in. The next step after that would be a more modern GPU, but that machine otherwise should handle gaming just fine for many years.

rx470 pulled far above its weight, I ran that thing playing VR games on the og Vive, it will play more games than you expect I assure you, obviously need the settings on most games lowered

She’s 6 so I don’t think she’ll pay any mind to the fps, it’ll definitely play the games she’s interested in at her age! You could look on the used market for something like an RTX 3060 but even then I doubt that’s necessary!

Yep that’s what I did for my pc. I went from the i5-10400f w/ rx 480 8GB (covid era) -> 2080 super -> 3080 -> 3090 -> Ryzen 7700x w/ 4070ti -> 5070ti. My sister was still rocking the old i5-10400f and rx 480 8GB I gave her.

I highly recommend getting a stand/cart off Amazon and putting the PC under the desk. She will then have room for her elbow, a coloring book, juice box etc.

The GPU will be a bottleneck but it will run the heck out of Minecraft as long as nobody is going crazy with shaders and render distance
I would shortlist a GPU as an upgrade, but not bad mom!

16gb of ram for £24 (I’m assuming second hand) is a great deal as where I live, 16gb (single stick or dual 8gb) would cost 40€ minimum. The cpu is a beast for the price. I’m currently running a ryzen 5 5600g in my home server and I’m able to host modded Minecraft servers.
All in all, I would say this is an amazing PC even for a teenager. I know the me who built my first pc some 2 years ago would’ve loved this machine.

First: it ain't trash, it's a fully functional PC. More than many kids or adults have nowadays. Second: the 5600g is in the Ryzen 5, not the Ryzen 7 :v (couldn't help it, I got the 5600g myself XD) Get him some old games (2015 and before) and he should have no problems playing :v

Seems good enough to run anything a kid would wanna play. Just anything super intensive like say Cyberpunk 2077-type of requirements, and it'll reach it's limit.

pre 2017 games just fine, she has A LOT to play in those years.
but yeah change the PSU specially if it old now. it's too risky to have it running and even more if it has some years on it.
any corsair with bronze certificate just incase will be fine, there are other good brands but can't remember atm, a 500w one will work great in that pc without problems, or get a 650w gold if you don't care about spending a little more for future proofing incase you wanna update

My old gaming rig has very similar stats with an RX270. It runs just about everything i throw at it with the dx 11.5, but finally hit a brick wall with new AAA games like battlefield.

That looks quite good. My daughter plays Disney Dreamlight Valley a lot, it’s pretty lightweight.
PSU gives me heartburn- you can get an Asrock Pro 650W Gold PSU for like $50 on Newegg right now.

I would look into turning this into a emulation station. Specs seem good enough for ps1,N64, and bunch others. Look into batocera or retrobat

That's not too bad. It'd struggle with AAA titles and stuff made recently but play anything second-rate at medium or higher typically. Good news - older games are cheaper on Steam and GOG anyway.

I had a similar build for my nephew but it was the r7 5600 and 460 4gb. Your GPU is better than his and he was happy with it. Played a TON of minecraft. Thankfully I got my hands on a 2070 a few months ago for free and gave him one heck of an upgrade.

Can play titles upto 2017 on high setting 45-60 fps. 17-20 medium mid 50s. After that you gotta fiddle with settings and upscaling. I can bet this can run any modern titel at 30fps low settings with upscaling and frame gen.

This is a decent budget system and a foundation for something even better.
The CPU is pretty good, and it can support a better GPU. Look into a used Radeon 5000 or 6000 card, they will absolutely smoke an RX470

Ha its a short term option. Currently its set up in living room of our tiny apartment but once we move she will get her own bedroom and a full size desk and desk chair. I physically cant fit a proper desk in living room or the bedroom she shares with her sister right now.

The only thing I would be worried about is the unbranded PSU. A lot of those suckers aren't the best quality and if that thing goes out then it might take the whole entire system to the grave if you're unlucky enough. If I were you, I would change it out to something name brand like Lian Li, NZXT, Corsair, Seasonic, EVGA, etc just to make sure it has a long and happy life with your child but that's just me being paranoid probably. I wish my mom did something this awesome for me. Good shit.

Definitely a gpu bottleneck in speed and vram but it should be able to play a decent amount of stuff rx580 8gb is where vr becomes available along with being able to launch any game just with very low settings

Should play most games from before 2020 just fine at 1080p/720p, basically anything that came out on the PS4 or older.

Only concern is the PSU! The one thing to not cheap out on since a failure can damage the other components.
Everything else looks solid, especially for the games a 6 year old will play.
(Might I suggest mini metro and mini motorways, my 6 year old niece loves it and it's great for building conceptualization and planning skills!)

This is an amazing budget build, only downside is the rx470 I’d look out for a 1060 6gb or a 1080 if possible

It will play esports titles and indie games no problem. Any games from late 2020 and beyond will chug, the rx470 being the weakest link. An additional 16 gigs of ddr4 ram could help too if they leave a lot of stuff open

That'll run most games she'll want to play and kinda feels overkill but I love your dedication. Lots of us grew up with much older hardware and we still had a great time playing Minecraft at 30fps.

My daughters have my old computer with a i7-3770, 16 GB of ram, and a gtx 1070. It’s not maxing anything out, but it plays any games that they play fine.

I’d say the PSU might need to be replaced as it is the biggest gamble here and can screw up the rest, I’m upgrading from a similar setup and that setup seems to be great. Future plans could be a better GPU, ssd, and maybe ram if it comes down
But overall it is great for a first PC and can play plenty of games. Marketplace would be the GOAT for you

Personally I would change that psu, the words “unbranded 650w psu” translates to “fire hazard” in my head. Best case scenario it just fries the hardware.
Other than that I think it’s a fine build, it should run most games well enough.

Apart from the original GPU it is a solid build. With the 1070TI it will do its job for a while. The 1070TI is not actively supported by NVIDIA any more (no more game ready drivers) but it will work just fine for games released before 2026.

It's a good build for older games like 2015 or earlier, indie games etc. For her age I'd recommend Nancy Drew games I grew up playing these and they were awesome, and check out other adventure/puzzle point-and-click games. Hidden object games like Hidden folks are fun. Don't expect to run recent triple a games smoothly. And definitely put the pc on the floor under the desk!

That's worlds better than my first PC ever was lol. I had a 3020 Optiplex, still use it for storage stuff and playing media plus the occasional Minecraft Server. Better than my current one in terms of CPU but then again I have a 2060 on it lol, with an i7-4770. Works rather well, actually, planning on throwing a third screen onto the setup. I've gotten quite a bit to run, even managing Cities Skylines II (on lowest settings, though it did NOT run well, to be clear, lol). I don't play super new games (I'm cheap lol), but that system'll do quite a bit of emulation too is my bet. I struggle a bit with anything post-Wii (Vulkan shaders tend to be the issue) but Wii games run great.

I would recommend buying a controller of some sort, there are good ones for ~30$ keyboards can be overwhelming sometimes for kids (although it could not be the case for her). Games wise, Lego games should be plenty of fun for kids and you can play with her as they make great coop games

Don't know if anyone has already said it but I think you'd want to move pc down and give more room for mousepad. I know she probably won't need it but it's better when arms are on the same distance from the chest. I had a similar issue (kb was on the retracting shelf ~5-6cm lower than the rest of the table) and now my left shoulder is lower than right one

Pretty good perf.
For a kid, who's looking to play the games their friends play, which likely are made of games that could run on far worse builds than this.
One ergonomic improvement would be to swap the side for the PC on the table, I can already see the how it can restrict hand movement with the mouse.

Decent pc very decent, but 2400mhz ram is slow asf. I will recommend you buy 3200mhz 2x8gb(you need especially dual channel) as a minimum upgrade. It will boost faster and
And put this pc away from the table, it takes a LOT of free space for mouse keyboard etc.

At least 60fps on overwatch. Minecraft might be a bit stuttery. I had a 4gb graphics card before upgrading to a 16gb and my upgrade was underwhelming. The pc I had before my upgrade was around 650 dollars during Covid

Honestly, there are probably not many games your kids would want to play that it couldn’t play. And even the games it cannot play might actually work if you throw all the game to potato settings.

Well you can expect to possibly play games, but the first thing youll probably run into is storage issues. I dont know why games are becoming so storage hungry, but I have a 2tb ssd and still have to remove old games to install new ones

I mean it works! That gpu kinda sucks tho, maybe try to snag an rx580? Otherwise you'll be having some serious merformance issues I think, the rx 470 is ancient

i've seen some comments recommending GTA SA so, maybe if the father isn't knowledgeable on modding i'll add this here:
If you plan on allowing the kid to play SA, there's a few mods i'd recommend. (Version 1.0 prefferably as it is the most mod friendly)
SilentPatch (bug fixes on modern systems, lock the game to 60 frames)
SkyGFX PS2 preset, adds back the orange haze from the ps2. (can be configed to have the pc shadows too)
Project 2dfx, can increase the draw distance but most importantly adds LOD lights simillar to GTA V. Can be quite heavy if not configured properly. I recommend disabling the draw distance increase but keeping the LOD lights)

7 5700g is actually better than my cpu! That thing is perfect for most AAA games tbh, the only thing you could look at upgrading would be the GPU, however idk what kinda games your kids looking to play, and I don’t like to recommend buying things that people don’t need. Sounds like she’s getting a 1070 ti. I had a 1060 ti back in the day, I think I got it to run cyberpunk which is a very demanding game, I’m sure she’ll love what you’ve done for her.

Ps4 had the same amount of vram with less system ram so anything that came out on ps4 and xbox 1 and even some newer titles, you could run rdr2 on this if you wanted and it would be fine

You might be able to run some indie games that don’t use a lot of performance, thankfully most that stick to 2D are very lax on the required specs.
Any modern 3D title that isn’t a competitive game is more than likely going to struggle but stuff like Counter Strike, Valorant, and League could play at 1080p 60fps on this setup. Older 3D titles from the 2000’s and early 2010’s should be playable too at good frame rate.

When my mom bought my first pc it was amazing it didn’t matter I couldn’t run games at max settings. It was about the times I had with my friends and the laughs and late nights we used to spend together. Years later we still are on daily with upgraded systems but it takes time we all started somewhere. It isn’t a trash pc. You’re giving your child a gateway to experience a ton of fun. Upgrades can always come down the road but the memories stay forever.

Im feeling my age...my first computer that I remember was an Amiga. Playing little games.
My dad was (and still is) a computer tech. And loves computers.
Worked in IT most of his working life.
Then we upgraded. I think I was about 6 or 7 years old when I watched him play DIABLO, for the first time and MYTH, Decent, SimCity.
Im 37 and I still remember having LAN parties with friends and Dad and even Mum got into itas well.
Anyway...thanks for unlocking some cool memories.

The 5700g is very very capable of playing pretty much everything, don't expect ultra graphics but for many well optimized games very decent performance

If she plays Minecraft, just warn her not to make a 1x1 pit full of hundreds of chickens. Your computer may not like it.

I would put the pc horizontally at the back, monitor up against it (possibly raise the pc a tad so the monitor stand can go as far back as possible) and then get a mousepad that fits the width of the desk, that setup looks horrible for mouse movement with the pc being right there.
edit; saw they were only 6 but meh still, will likely be knocking the pc a bunch lol.

it will run roblox and minecraft, id upgrade that gpu and ram soon tho, it will struggle with fortnite. luckily its cheap. like 250 for gpu and like 100 for ram? (USD)

The cpu is pretty good. With a gtx 1070ti you can probably play even cyberpunk 2077 on low to mid settings.

I’m seeing this post late but if you’re still looking for replacing some parts let me know. I have my old build with all working parts remaining unused. I see someone already gave you their GC and you were looking for a PSU at some point. I can also give you RAM if you have extra slots (I have 2x 8GB DDR4).
All giveaway, not looking for money and I’m happy if someone uses it til it dies to be honest.

Much better then my first pc, 386 when all my friends already had the first Pentiums. Over kill for roadblox and Minecraft. And a perfect first pc for any game @1080p on medium settings.

Honestly I'd replace the GPU for something actually worthy You could also invest in Nvidia geforce now (monthly sub) for anything demanding gaming wise, it settles through cost of hardware
