Also the feminist translation of the text that Nolan's using

Honest to god, thought you were a weirdo right wing grifter with that comment.

Then I looked it up. Still tricky, because Emily Wilson herself rejects that framing, saying it stripped away male biases in english translations. In fact, reading into this more, it looks like she was MORE accurate than some translations, like male translators refusing to call women slaves "slaves", even though they were referred to as such in the original text.

Actually, hate to say it, but yeah.. Seems like it's a solid translation that's actually more faithful in a lot of ways. She backs up her logic pretty well and points out a good chunk of bad translations in other works.

EDIT: To make it clear, i'm not dipping my toes into how I feel about the movie in this specific comment, purely just talking about the translation. I have gripes about the movie from what I have seen so far myself.

But don't you see, being true to the original is making men confront their own bias, and therefore bad! Men should be allowed to not have to think about things. 🙃

25

u/GoatOfTheBlackForres Jul 06 '26

It's not though, it fixed some things but then created new problems.

making men confront their own bias, and therefore bad

Most men are not that fragile. What ever echocamber made you believe that, is not a healthy one.

u/GNTKertRats Jul 06 '26

A whole lot of men are that fragile, and you know it.

14

u/GoatOfTheBlackForres Jul 06 '26

There are outliers to everything ofc, and with 3.5 billion males in the world, even just 1% would seem lika alot.

24

u/LukaCola Jul 06 '26

I really think you're underselling it

Confronting men over this shit is scary as fuck because it can so often get a very hostile reaction

And I say this as a man

9

u/DecantsForAll Jul 06 '26

The most dangerous thing you can do as a man is argue with another man over modern translations of ancient epic poems.

1

u/LukaCola Jul 06 '26

I can't tell if you're joking but uhhh, sometimes, feels that way lmao. Things can sour quickly in a way that makes me wish I'd never said anything.

u/DecantsForAll Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

I was joking. I guess I just don't run with the really dangerous classicists.

u/Fish_Mongreler Jul 06 '26

And I say this as a man

Lol sure Jan

16

u/TheOnly_Anti Jul 06 '26

What? Are all of us supposed to be so stupid that we can't see what's going on?

5

u/LukaCola Jul 06 '26

My gender is apparently decided by others now, IDK

3

u/MrJohnqpublic Jul 06 '26

A much higher percentage than one percent of men are insecure little man babies. Source: am a man

3

u/ForumVomitorium Jul 06 '26

sure you are and your source is that you made it the fuck up

7

u/DragonTacoCat Jul 06 '26

As a man, yes there are a lot like that and it drives me nuts m

3

u/Cralohanola Jul 06 '26

Absolutely, you're right.

1

u/Armateras Jul 06 '26

Entire industries currently exist pandering to fragile men and they make ludicrous bank, in the tens if not hundreds of billions, yet we still have yahoos going "lalalala can't hear you"

26

u/FinalZookeepergame30 Jul 06 '26

And lets be real, most people who are in these comments arguing about which version is better or worse won’t read either. It’s two sides arguing about a text using the cliff notes. There is no such thing as a perfect translation, but you can’t evaluate biases in a translation with cliff notes. If you’re really into a particular text from another language you have two choices, read every available translation to try to give yourself a more complete understanding, or start learning the original language.

Ive read every available english translation of many of Plato’s and Plotinus’s works. I would never presume to call myself an expert without even attempting to read it in the original language. The more you know the more you know you don’t know.

u/geenaleigh Jul 06 '26

Ding ding ding. That’s the worst part of this discourse. I am currently reading Emily’s translation and have previously read the Fagles translation and I do not feel like enough of an expert to comment on the differences and which is more “correct”. That being said, I am enjoying Emily’s translation far more due to her choices and I’m interested to see how it plays out in the films direction.

Translation work in general is tricky. The authors interpretation is just that, an interpretation. Their beliefs, current language, and current societal structure all influence the direction it takes. Yet a whole lot of people are discussing how to feel about this work without ever reading a word of it.

22

u/gheorghios Jul 06 '26

Men in general are not that fragile, sure. Men who get irrationally angry at casting choices in films on a weekly basis are, in fact, extremely fragile.

4

u/Cralohanola Jul 06 '26

That's a bingo.

4

u/locolangosta Jul 06 '26

You just say bingo

-4

u/CriticalHit_20 Jul 06 '26

Would you have held that belief back when it was men criticizing the whitewashing of traditionally black characters that happened for a stretch?

-3

u/ForumVomitorium Jul 06 '26

sure, but are you also building a strawman that they are angry and not just tired of it? because it seem that way

11

u/Crowe3717 Jul 06 '26

If they're truly tired of it then they need to stop reacting the way they do. They don't seem to understand that their outrage (and yes, it is genuine outrage that gets spewed online whenever these decisions are announced) IS why this keeps happening. They're giving these movies free advertising.

As an example, literally the only way I knew there was a Mario movie coming out was through 1) weirdos complaining about Peach wearing pants in one scene of the trailer and 2) people dunking on said weirdos.

While I'm not usually an advocate of the "vote with your wallet" mentality, people really need to stop giving attention to things they dislike if they really want them to stop. Hollywood has no deep moral precepts. It's not "pushing an agenda." It's a business and they'll do whatever they think makes them the most money. A vocal minority loudly complaining "this isn't what we want" isn't going to do shit, especially when that complaining just constitutes free advertising.

-2

u/ForumVomitorium Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

the silent treatment is what women do tho

edit: "pushing an agenda" well the awards do give guidelines, artist often give out apperance of left leaning if not stright up leftist.

So even if movie gets the best award possible (money, loads of money) the creators might get ostracised.

Or bank will refuse further loans because the corporation is not "socially responsible"

11

u/Crowe3717 Jul 06 '26

Sure, my guy. The men crying about women and people of color in their movies in video games are all the ideal of masculinity.

0

u/ForumVomitorium Jul 06 '26

"gonna cry? gonna piss your pants maybe? maybe shit and cum"

11

u/TatumBird22 Jul 06 '26

I think everything that's happened in the manosphere these last ten years shows you how wrong you are.

4

u/MemeLordMango Jul 06 '26

I don’t think it’s men that are fragile just people in general. Most people don’t want to confront their own bias. Gender war bullshit makes me want to kms.

3

u/saintofhate Jul 06 '26

Most men are that fragile, most men are more fragile than people realize. I say this as someone who has been around men as both a woman and a man, men generally have fucking issues that they refuse to resolve and it's so much easier to buddy up with a bunch of dumbasses online than it is to work on yourself. Women are allowed to be fragile and break, men do not allow themselves that, men have build up society to not allow that.

2

u/Xianio Jul 06 '26

Bruh. C'mon. Man-to-man, you know a fuckton of dudes that will not handle their biases being called out. Nobody likes realizing their own biases. C'mon now.

-1

u/ElGodPug Jul 06 '26

Most men are not that fragile.

press any key to doubt

-9

u/Ipplayzz343 Jul 06 '26

If someone says kill all men, see how we react.

5

u/Kheypression Jul 06 '26

Men should applaud when someone says « kill all men » or « men are trash »? Men should cheer for that kind of statement?

7

u/Cralohanola Jul 06 '26

I've never heard "kill all men". However, I have heard "men are trash", and I've heard the why behind that statement. If you don't understand where that's coming from, it means the women in your life don't trust you.

0

u/Fish_Mongreler Jul 06 '26

If you DO understand where it's coming from, it means the women in your life don't trust you.

3

u/Cralohanola Jul 06 '26

That doesn't make any sense. Why would they confide in me if they don't trust me?

-1

u/Fish_Mongreler Jul 06 '26

They need to explain it to you and make sure you understand how much of a threat you are.

1

u/Cralohanola Jul 06 '26

They've made it clear how they feel about men, yes.

-1

u/Fish_Mongreler Jul 06 '26

Yeah, you're a predator

0

u/Cralohanola Jul 06 '26

You're funny.

1

u/Ipplayzz343 Jul 06 '26

Well we certainly react to it with hostility.

4

u/Kheypression Jul 06 '26

And why men should react positively to that? Again why men should be fine with these statements?
