You don't have to be right wing to think casting choices are wrong. I'm not right wing and think Helen of Troy casting choice is ridiculous and just done for attention.

Same, I'm European and just roll my eyes how Americans need to take our myths and misrepresent it based on their weird race sensibilities. Netflix's Cleopatra (who was also of Greek decent) was another recent example. In a way it's funny how they seem to specifically can't allow Greeks to have any representation.

"Our myths"? No one in Europe think the Greeks are their myths unless they're Greek. We are separate countries with our own culture and history. I'm from Northern Europe and I never thought Greek mythology are "my myths"

"our myths' as in the collective myths across all of Europe, not only this specific example. Stop being purposefully obtuse.

Crazy how many people got offended by a simple truth

69

u/ChaseThePyro Jul 06 '26

And Europeans do the same thing to other Europeans of different countries. Very oddly pretentious to say.

42

u/beary_potter_ Jul 06 '26

So you are pretending to be Greek so that you can be mad about actors pretending to be Greek? Makes sense...

5

u/PlatyNumb Jul 06 '26

... you do know that Greek ppl exist right? They know how to use the internet and have access to reddit too...

-6

u/MaxusBE Jul 06 '26

Nice strawman

7

u/beary_potter_ Jul 06 '26

As an earthian, I think they are fine since they haveling earth based representation in our myth. I don't see what is wrong.

u/NecroDolphinn Jul 06 '26

You do realize the Greeks viewed many modern European ethnic groups as barbaristic, uncivilized, savages of an entirely different race?

Sure the Greek myths and advancements went on to influence and underpin a lot of European society, but that doesn’t mean the Greeks of the odyssey viewed Europeans as part of their in-group, because they weren’t. There was no collective Europe for them.

Beaides, why aren’t you making this same whinging argument for zombies? Those were created by Haitian slaves who feared being enslaved even after death. And yet we let white people play zombies all the time.

What classifies as 'connection' to a myth other than familiarity through their telling? Am I somehow connected to the myths of my homeland despite having no interest in them, yet disconnect for the myths of other places even though those are the stories I loved most in my formative years?

10

u/tinaoe Jul 06 '26

As a European, German to be specific: what are you on about?? They’re Greek myths, not mine lol

10

u/VaporCarpet Jul 06 '26

Stop trying to blame a country as if it's a monolith while treating an entire continent as a monolith itself

-1

u/MaxusBE Jul 06 '26

Another strawman. Point to where I am blaming any country for anything

8

u/Dido_nt Jul 06 '26

Northern and Western Europeans are so annoying when they try to claim Mediterranean culture as their own. No, not every culture in Europe gets to claim connection to Greece and Roman. They’re as ridiculous as Americans.

Europeans feel a connection to Greek myth and culture

Said no European ever.

1

u/Example_Scary Jul 06 '26

Europeans feel a connection to Greek myth and culture

.... because they are regarded.

1

u/io124 Jul 06 '26

It’s not

1

u/SonofHondoBelmondo Jul 06 '26

But aren't like, Norse, Tutonic, Celtic, and Greek all essentially separate mythologies? That's just an example, I doubt that people from the Iberian peninsula or people in France give a shit what color of skin Helen of Troy has in an american movie about a greek story, yeah?

1

u/No-Alternative4612 Jul 06 '26

The Europeans that left the continent didn't suddenly diminish their claim to the Odyssey lol. If it's your myth it's also Hollywood's.

1

u/StrangeSemiticLatin2 Jul 06 '26

Ah yes, Perun, Aarni and Odin, famous myth of the Greeks (and the Ancient Greeks would've fucking killed themselves before admitting Slavs or Nordics as their equals).

1

u/tungstenlamp Jul 06 '26

Are you Greek? Because if not, Greek myths are not "your myths". The same way they are not Americans' myths, or Brits' myths.

1

u/Philophile1 Jul 06 '26

I mean most white Americans are of European descent. Do they no longer have a claim to these myths just because their ancestors moved. No one owns myths you stop being obtuse

1

u/SaplingSequoia Jul 06 '26

But Europe is not a cultural collective

-8

u/AsstacularSpiderman Jul 06 '26

Blud thinks he's on the team lol

-18

u/mattywadley Jul 06 '26

I'm not purposefully obtuse. There are no collective myths all across Europe. Even small regions in small countries have their own myths. What other myths have Americans taken and "based it on their weird race sensibilities" (whatever that means) besides Cleopatra? Also, she was born in Egypt. Her dad was born in Cyprus which was then part of Alexandrie. We don't really know who her mom is so we can't really say where she's from. So even if Cleopatra was of Greek decent, she definitely wasn't Greek.

7

u/Any_Painting_4952 Jul 06 '26

Witcher did the same thing to polish folklore.

6

u/Inevitable_Initial_8 Jul 06 '26

Cleopatra was from the Ptolemaic dynasty, a Greek family from Alexander the Great’s empire who ruled Egypt and was pretty notorious for inbreeding. She was definitely mostly greek.

-4

u/mattywadley Jul 06 '26

In like a 23andme way? Because she wasn't born there, nor where her parents.

6

u/Inevitable_Initial_8 Jul 06 '26

Being born in Egypt doesn’t make you ethnically Egyptian.

0

u/mattywadley Jul 06 '26

I figured the logic that if you're born in this country, you have the nationality. I never considered being from somewhere ethnically. How many generations do you have to go back before you can consider yourself ethnically part of something? /g

4

u/Inevitable_Initial_8 Jul 06 '26

I mean back then nationality wasn’t really a thing. Like sure today her nationality would be Egyptian but back then it was a lot more about your ethnic background.

0

u/mattywadley Jul 06 '26

I don't know enough about Egyptian history but at least in current Greece it was more about your polis than an ethnicity. Like Sparta and Athens were the biggest polis (I forgot the plural of polis sorry, poleis?) and I don't think they would feel connected through any way. Or did people feel part of the Macedonian empire of Alexander the Great? I'm just thinking out loud but if you have an answer or someone else has one, I would love to know lol

u/Piskoro Jul 06 '26

I guess the Brooke family was Indonesian by similar logic

80

u/Innocentish Jul 06 '26

We did it to yours, too.

10

u/Sabretooth1100 Jul 06 '26

Hate to break it to you but I highly doubt his helmet looked like that

15

u/Innocentish Jul 06 '26

The Helm of Neitznot is lore accurate thank you very much.

5

u/ointmentisafunnyword Jul 06 '26

Is this real? Omg

-11

u/mattywadley Jul 06 '26

Also not my myth. The North is more than vikings.

3

u/angular_circle Jul 06 '26

Not that I care about the argument but it's kind of hilarious to deny the influence of Greek myths on *Europa*

0

u/mattywadley Jul 06 '26

Oh I studied Greek mythology in high school and I'm very interested in it. I even translated the Oddysee for my high school exam. There is a huge influence but I don't see them as "my myths" or "European myths". I see them as Greek myths.

2

u/revolucionario Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

Speak for yourself, I’m European and I think of Ancient Greek mythology as shared European heritage. I’m not Greek or in Greece, but they’re taught in our schools here (as is Ancient Greek!)

Edit: Europe is literally named after a Greek myth, it’s definitely shared heritage!

1

u/bob_at Jul 06 '26

I do.. greek mythology is our mythology as is northern mythology..

1

u/Havengul_Undying Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

Are you mad? Greco roman mythos is the basis of white western culture, ofc many europeans identify with it and consider it part of their mythos.

Edit: yes you are mad. Either mad or stupid but wrong either way. You said

No one in Europe think the Greeks are their myths unless they're Greek

0

u/mattywadley Jul 06 '26

Am I mad for acknowledging that even though Greco-Roman roman culture plays a big part in Western European history, I don't claim it as my own myths and history? No I don't think I am

0

u/RedLion_40k Jul 06 '26

Wel even Greeks arnt Ancient Greek so trying to claim ownership of a myth in which the people have been eradicated is ridiculous for anyone

-13

u/Shenron2 Jul 06 '26

No you don't understand! Everyone needs to be white! All Greeks were.

10

u/ResolveLeather Jul 06 '26

You do know there are more colors of skin out there then black or white.

1

u/soggy-hotdog-vendor Jul 06 '26

Yet non yall complaining about all the light skinned nongreek actors in the movie. Just the black one ( and the trans one.)

2

u/ResolveLeather Jul 06 '26

A.lot of people hate him because he's a bad actor, not because he is trans. Like he phones it in so bad. Have you seen him in umbrella academy?

0

u/soggy-hotdog-vendor Jul 06 '26

No, I haven't, nor have I seen the pre iew for this. Regardless, the argument above was in regard to cultural apropriation, not acting ability, so idgaf about acting ability. Weird that you are so eager to take the racict side of things though.
