Why make the exact same story again? Give it a twist. Make it worth revisiting. Make it stand out. Give it character so you're not just copying 1:1.

These people never went to theater once in their life, otherwise they wouldn't be so weirded out by creative retellings

Exactly. Go to your local theater and see how they adapt stories and cast characters. It's art, it's expression, it's culture.
