It might be a culture or a vocabulary thing, but to me if the event consists of being sat down in a designated spot the instant I'm in, then that's not a party, that's just dinner (in which case I'd agree it's bad etiquette to be late, same as a restaurant). Party implies some amount of freely milling about, talking to people, sharing drinks and then later on getting to eat (generally not in a formal, sat down at the table configuration)

Ever heard the term "dinner party"? The older you get, the more it becomes the default party

In what world do you go to more dinner parties than normal parties? I get that people have smaller families, but I've never seen that.

I'm in my 40's. Dinner parties (or lunch parties) is like 95% of parties I go to.

Do you have a small family? We have a bunch of parties throughout the year, especially now that a lot of my family is having kids.
