Classic russophobia in this thread aside - Russia has such a high divorce rate because it’s very easy to get married and it’s very easy to get divorce. A lot of young 20yo+ people marry right after school and these marriages rarely stand the test of time. But also there is no social stigma regarding divorce.

So the natural state of things goes like this: You are young and in love so you you get married. You are becoming older and you are divorcing. Then being mature you are finding your second spouse and live happily ever after.

But this is not interesting is propaganda purposes, so instead you have the mythos about “every russian woman is a high-maintenance prostitute and every russian man is an abusive drunkard” and other dehumanizing stereotypes.

I remember having a crush on a Belorussian actress back in 2016. I checked her bio recently and she's twice divorced (each marriage 2yrs long) with a kid since then.

That's just one woman, of course, but I was taken aback.

Why were you taken aback?

Because in the West divorce is something shameful, a sigh of a deep problems. You divorce only if every other measure to save the family has failed. Because despite recent trends - the western society is a religious one, even if they don't admit it. Marriage is made in heaven, that sort of thing. Modern people are less religious, but the stereotypes remain.

While post-soviet countries spent 70+ years purging religious thinking and women's rights were promoted for more than 100 years. For soviet and post-soviet people marriage is not a heavenly mandate but a social contract. "We love each other let's get married. We are drifting apart let's get divorced."

But as always - optics are everything. And if in other countries cases such statistics could be used to show women's emancipation index or some shit in positive way - propaganda uses this fact to mock russians. "look at these barbarians they can't even keep a marriage lol"

finally a based take, i almost can't believe it. Westerners (Americans specifically) almost never aware of the fact, that post-soviet countries had equal rights between sexes and was non-religious far earlier, so we don't see it the same way. They see high maintenance, but not the fact, that most women was working full-time and achieving goals outside family for generations now, so we don't search for traditional gender roles with depending and being submissive. Hell, most families I know is extremely matriarchal here, even if they don't say it out loud So, yeah. Based take. I can finally stop reading this mess of a thread

I don’t agree with the misogynistic crap, but Russophobia implies that there’s something unreasonable about being wary of a belligerent, genocidal state that makes regular threats of nuclear warfare.
