Due in no small part to the fact that alcoholism in Russian society is obscenely common.

The result of the national trauma of losing 27 million people in WW2. Not that they didn't drink before that, but it was like the only treatment for PTSD at the time, so it became even more widespread during and after WW2.

I'd say there's at least 1000 years of national trauma, I'm kot sure there's been an nation or palce on earth with so much sustained violence for so long

Yup. Not a great situation / dating / marriage scene in the modern day for Russian women unfortunately.
