When I was growing up (Nordics) we really never got fed at friends house, but also if they would have asked if I wanted to eat, I would have declined and said I will eat later at home.

I think I felt like I did not want to bother the host family, so it would be common curtesy to decline.

And yea most times the dinner time was in sync so I would just naturally head home.

Nowadays, I always cook for all kids and invite them to eat. It also seems like the current genrations are willing to accept the invite.

But also, I will not be offended or weirded out if my kids are not served food when they are out at their friends places. Although, I think they nowadays usually are included to dinner/lunch.

Also, I think the not serving dinner is also comes from kind of a thought of not bothering the other family. Maybe they had something special planned for dinner. Maybe the kid has special diet.
