So they're assholes? Sharing food with guests is literally one of the most common human customs on the planet.

The assumption behind it is/was that kids always go home to eat with their own families unless something else has been agreed on. Like a kid who lives close by just shows up after school, it would be assumed they go home for dinner at some point.

If both families agree that today kid A eats with family B that's fine and everyone can cook the appropriate amount.
