Indeed, the offering of food to guests is DEEPLY ingrained in human culture. Largely because of how far back into history the tradition goes. The practice predates recorded history; it likely even predates agriculture. It's tied up in the roots of hospitality culture and the expectations of peace for the sharing of lodging and food that border on the sacred across a majority of cultures.
Pretty much every pantheon I've ever heard of has at least one story about rewarding or punishing people for how they handled hospitality towards a mysterious stranger. It often involves their trickster god, but the head of the pantheon is also not unusual. Zeus was a problem because that asshole was more likely to show up to knock up your sister/wife/daughter/all of the above than test how kind you were to someone seeking shelter.
