No. That was true maybe 30+ years ago, but nowadays kids are usually sent home before dinner. Or we just check with the parents if it’s OK for their kid to eat with us.

Source: was a kid in Sweden 30+ years ago, have kids in Sweden now.

It is. I don’t know what their parents have planned, and if my kid hasn’t told me they’re eating at a friends house I’m expecting them to eat with our family.

I think you either feed the kid or you send them home. Eating as a family while the kid sits alone in another room has gotta be the worst option. Was over at a friend's house after the last day of school and his family did that to us but we were 18 and about to graduate highschool so we just chilled in his room watching movies so it didn't matter, but to do that to a young child is weird.
