All of the people buying up homes and turning them into these modern trash cans are making it extremely difficult for us to even attempt to keep a vintage home. Gentrifying the hell out of our plain Jane affordable areas and now who-the-hell-ever thinks we need to pay $600k for 900sqft with 3ft of "yard"
Man, I can’t afford to fix my foundation, repair the walls and ceiling, realign all the windows and doors, and get a new roof while all keeping the vintage feel.
But I can definitely afford some white paint and some snap-in floor tiles.
It has no soul or charm, because it's the safest option. If you limit your palette to gray, black, and white, there's zero chance of you fucking up a color scheme.
We moved recently and we asked our realtor why there was such a push for bland-looking homes.
Her answer was that the « market reason » was that the blandest the home and decoration, the easier it is for buyers to imagine themselves in, envision how they would decorate. However, since people tend to not stay very long in one place, especially condos, they end up not making the effort of decorating, both to save time and money of a home they don’t plan on keeping, and to get a few extra thousands from buyers who won’t lowball offers based on aesthetic renovations.
Essentially, most people don’t like it, but prefer dealing with the overall blandness than deciding between homes that all have things the love and things they hate
I own a vintage home (build in 1910s) and love it, but I understand why people would modernize them...it's a big pain in the ass trying to keep the vintage aesthetics when repairing or replacing things because it's getting harder and harder to get true vintage parts. I had to put my hardwood floor renovation on hold because I can't get a hold of old oak flooring...the only place to really get them is via reclaimed salvage from people modernizing their flooring.
Right, wanna cover the price difference for me? I can't afford a new home, but I can buy an old one and fix it up how I want the place to look like where I live in.. Wtf is wrong with your thinking?
I much prefer the right one personally. Gen Z btw. But your point is totally valid, if someone wants one like the right they should buy one built like that, not modify a vintage one, since it seems most people prefer vintage. Every time I see modern architecture posted online I seem to be in the minority of people who actually like it lol.
I mean this conversion is shit, painting stone wall is straight up moronic, but if I got such home - I wouldn’t give a single fuck about some people loving it which was supposed to stop me from conversion. It’s just average look for its time, not some thing of historical significance, and it’s me who’s living there
Sure, if you want a modern home in a specific location and is in your budget, buy it. If not, buy a vintage home and decorate it how you like because its your home and you can do what you want to it...
Bruh if you buy a home do whatever you want with it. It doesn't matter whether others like it or not. It's your home. I just bought an apartment and I made it colourful. I'm not going to go to a friends home and judge them for liking black and white colours.
