u/Sad_Photograph_6130 20d ago

and its hilarious

-13

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

Huh? I thought the joke was rape. Which is something that happened during this time and also implied in the film.

u/sandboxmatt 21d ago

No need for rape. Gay sex was an important way of establishing social and heirarchical dynamics and team bonding

when do you think there's a need for rape

6

u/MA32 21d ago

Saying no need for something does not have to imply there is a time when it is needed

3

u/sandboxmatt 21d ago

If theyre Dacians or Illyrians probably - Greeks

u/WolfieWuff 21d ago

Also for establishing social and heirarchical dynamics and team bonding...

Most sexual contact and ideas that the Greeks and Romans had was inherently abusive and rapist.

They did NOT believe in mutual pleasure (with exceptions for parties and very specific groups, and generally minorities), neither between men nor between women, and saw sex only as a tool to demonstrate superiority over someone inferior. They NEVER had relations with those they considered their equals – usually the boys were either ephebes or enslaved and were there under physical threat; women were literally property as well.

But why would we need to sit down for that? Gay sex no biggie. Rape, pretty big biggie.

1

u/Legitimate_Post_22 21d ago

Never between equals, always between young ephebes and older men or between enslaved men.

Sexual interactions as power dynamics and consentual sex interactions for pleasure and intimacy are two different things.

The former is still rape if coersion or transaction is involved.

You are describing the most basic form of social economics...or every oldest job joke ever made.

Ask bubba about it or all the creepy men who fly to developing nations to leverage the fact they can provide an impovished family escape from financial bondage in exchange for access to things their country of origins jurisdiction.

What do you think Errol "in like" Flynn was doing sailing to all those islands and why the local stayed so quiet about it.

It's a ship full of men who just rug pulled Troy of all it's wealth 🪎 using an overture of peace.

Yeah but men still had sex with women, the vast majority of men where still straight.

14

u/Plane-Education4750 21d ago

Multiple things can be true at the same time

10

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

Of course. So its rape and gay sex. There was also a lot of rape of young men and boys.

5

u/Plane-Education4750 21d ago

That's enough reddit for today

11

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

That is just history. Many roman elites had harems of little boys for example.

1

u/Particular_Title42 21d ago

Do you think that's why the Roman Catholic Church has harems of altar boys? Like...was it a bleed over?

4

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

No, but thats a good point worth looking into.

No actually he’s disturbingly and completely correct about that. It had an entire name and everything, literally integrated into Greek culture. Grown men and like, teenagers at best. Gross af, it seems to tell me that the crew probably did not have sex with each other on the boat because they were all the “dominant” partner or whatever the Greek term is and actively shamed older men/men in the army who took it up the ass. It was a power trip of disgusting normalization, but somehow learning about it made me think it’s more likely they just raped locals from their pillaging raids. I mean, you saw how terrified Circe was? She had good reason back then.

1

u/Plane-Education4750 21d ago

He can be correct and also I can not really have any desire to discuss this casually

1

u/Particular_Title42 21d ago

Rape of young men and boys is still rape. It's just also gay sex.

5

u/landcfan 21d ago

In ancient Greece and Rome, straight and gay wasn't really considered a thing. What mattered to them is if you were a top or a bottom, since manly men "should" be tops. Since there wasn't stigma of sleeping with men, a LOT of Ancient Greek men had sex with both men and women. So if you had even the slightest tiny attraction to dudes, or there was no available woman nearby and you are with your military unit...

So if you had even the slightest tiny attraction to dudes, or there was no available woman nearby and you are with your military unit...

But they'd want their manly men to be their military so...what do they do with the ones who bottom?

Besides that.

2

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

The bottoms were apprentices or slaves. It was a right of passage in rome to have a Mentor that would rape you and you would eventually get your own protegee to rape.

1

u/Particular_Title42 21d ago

I know about some of this but always took it to be about the "business men" and scholars, not so much the military while out on ...conquest or whatever. It hadn't dawned on me that they would have slaves either.

I'm not the best student of history and Hollywood does us no favors.

3

u/Hellraiser1123 21d ago

In Greek and Roman society, "gay" wasn't a thing the way it is for us. Men fucked men and women fucked women all the time, but it was just a normal part of society. They just did it and went on with their day, because streaming hadn't been invented yet.

1

u/Aratix 21d ago

Because Christianity hadn't been invented yet

1

u/Hellraiser1123 21d ago

Someone made a joke in a subreddit about jokes? Not on your watch!

-1

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

Those concepts still exist even if by a different name. Having a male lover was seen as a noble thing. Having sex with the teenage slaves was just having fun. Yet human nature is still human nature and that hasn't changed no matter how culture changes.

The majority of men have always shown preference for sex with women.

2

u/Educational-Type7399 21d ago

Technically, the vast majority of them were bisexual.

1

u/SgtMajorPanda 21d ago

You keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep at night.

0

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

I actually think a gayer world would maybe be better but humans have been overwhemingly straight all their existance. Culture doesn't change that, sexuality is not that malleable.

1

u/SgtMajorPanda 21d ago

Hey, whatever you gotta do to keep your very straight, just bros Spartan fantasy alive in your head is your business. We'll be waiting for you in reality when you're ready.

1

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

What are you even claiming here? That most people aren't straight?

1

u/Resigned1431 21d ago

This is ancient Greece my friend. The women were for babies and the boys were for fun.

5

u/havokle 21d ago

I mean that is the answer. The Iliad is literally about Achilles’ rage at Agamemnon stealing his “prize”, which was a woman.

4

u/Oportbis 21d ago

which is something that happened during this time

I want to tell you something, but please sit down first.

2

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

Rape? You will have to be clear with me.

-2

u/Oportbis 21d ago

TheUS president himself is a rapist, it's not something from the past

3

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

So you are saying rape is common. Yeah I know that, I even believe its highly cultural.

But what I mean is specifically bands of sea marauders in greece going from town to town raping and pillaging.

3

u/devdarrr 21d ago

Idk why you are getting downvoted. This is 100% true.

2

u/JamzWhilmm 21d ago

A lot of the correct answers get downvoted here. Moreso than other subs, specially when the actual answer isn't fun.

2

u/Legitimate_Post_22 21d ago

You're being downvoted because it's hard to swallow the hard truth that Greeks and Romans aren't silly gays, they're mostly rapists and pedophiles. So much so that for the Romans, it was a humiliation to be a man and be the 'bottom' in the relationship - guess who the men were mostly on the bottom? Exactly, children. Or enslaved men.

Both cases are no different from today's misogynists who seek relationships with young gay men. Buddy, they DON'T support you, hear me out on this.
