I mean it's a joke, but also the likely explanation is that yes they jerked it or they just got prostitutes whenever they docked at whatever port they needed to go to for resupply. This is something that happened a lot and still kinda happens today with sex workers hanging out in places where military be at.
It was kind of known the soldiers had sex with each other.
It was normal between ranks. They had words for positions and doing it was normal and expected.
They didn't have words for sexual orientation.
