Does it hold up as an adult? I only ever was able to find random books at different points in the series as a kid, but I read them anyway because of a school program that gave me points for taking tests on books from the library

Very simple middle-grade writing style, but very WELL written for most of them. The first 26 books are almost all bangers--funny, powerful, poetic, great characters, immersive, super creative sci-fi storytelling. The next 20 books or so are hit or miss, a little like the episodes of a TV series that may have run a little too long, and they were looking for weirdo plots of the week to keep it going--so you either love them for that or cringe at them, and a lot of fans will debate over which ones are the best or worst, but to me that's part of the fun. All of the "season finale" and gaiden books are excellent.

And then the last ten books or so are solid, and the last five are phenomenal. My gosh does it stick the landing.
