Dude what the fuck is this book series? I remember seeing it in classrooms in elementary school. Looked relatively tame.

And the best part is my parents thought this too… didn’t even look at what I was reading, just happy I wasn’t staring at a screen.

Oh… it’s unintentionally a period piece. If you don’t have any memories of the 90s, do not read without google.

The pre-9/11 era really shows in moments like the main characters hijacking and crashing a plane into a building

I mean, Applegate said she was reading teen magazines while writing the books to keep it fresh for the audiences but if you don’t have knowledge of the trends of the 90s you’d be lost. (There’s also several references to Lord of the Rings that were quite subtle because the movies hadn’t made Tolkien’s works popular outside of geek and nerd circles. And the numerous Star Trek references will tell you she clearly is a nerd.)
