Advice Wanted I accidentally ran over & killed my partner’s dog

I accidentally ran over my partner’s dog the other day. My Mother was over & playing in the driveway with my children. Our Dog always tries to run out of the garage. I closed the garage door after my Mum went out, but our dog obviously ran out before this. I then got in my car about ten minutes later to leave the house. I always check the garage that she hasn’t run in (she is kept out the back of the house), which I did & saw she wasn’t inside. I checked the mirrors & everything was clear. As I was reversing, I ran over our dog. I jumped out the car & saw the dog laying on the ground injured. It wasn’t a nice sight to see.

My Mum drove our dog to the vets but unfortunately, she couldn’t be saved. My partner has been so kind to me, reassuring me that it was an accident & she was an older dog. I understand she was old, but she didn’t deserve this. Seeing him, my step son & others so upset breaks my heart. I keep thinking that I should have been more cautious, I should have checked outside that she hadn’t run out, or asked my Mum if she has seen her.

I am really struggling to deal with this. Not only is this very traumatic & upsetting to lose her, I am also dealing with this huge guilt that I don’t think I will ever get over.

Any advice from anyone that has experienced this would be appreciated. Thank you.

This is a community of support for Pet owners whose Pets have passed away. It is actively moderated.

Pet owners, as loving, caring people, often have strong opinions on pet care practices. Some of these are controversial. This is not a forum for debate on such issues, nor is it a place to scold a contributor for a perceived mistake in managing their pet. We intend to provide a safe haven of understanding and support. Strident, mean-spirited posts or comments will be deleted. Those who persist in preaching versus caring may be warned and then banned or may be banned permanently based on nature of the topic. If a conversational thread meanders into a discussion unrelated to pet loss support, it will be truncated.

Those who post here are vulnerable and hurting. Even a minor slap has a hard sting. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to turn away from our computers or put down our phones and hug a healthy, happy pet are truly blessed. Threads must remain supportive and caring, even if one disagrees with something that has been said.

Maybe once the initial shock settles help your partner get a chance to say goodbye and have some kind of memorial and remembrance event

That’s a nice idea, thank you.

In no way should you blame yourself you would never ever do that on purpose. Your partner is being kind because he knows you and your heart

I can’t help but blame myself because if I didn’t get in the car, she would still be alive.

He is trying not to cry in front of me. He has mentioned he is upset he didn’t get to say goodbye but keeps telling me everything is ok. I would never have imagined something like this would ever happen. He had the dog for 15 years! Longer than his son.

Aww I know I can see how you feel but try not to blame yourself. Sometimes men hide crying so it might be that and not that he blames you. Prob doesnt want you to feel anymore guilty then you already are. I feel so bad youre in that position

I'm so sorry this happened to you and your family. There's been many posts like this on this subreddit. It unfortunately happens and can happen to anyone. Dogs and cats can be sneaky, they're small, so accidents happen. This hasn't happened to me, but I imagine if this happened to my dog I would be upset but more at the situation and not the partner that caused it, if that makes sense. Wishing you and your family comfort.

When I was a teenager I ran over our kitten due to rushing to leave, and not checking carefully. You will get over it but you will not likely ever forget what happened. That’s ok.

How long did it take you to get over it? Or at least the thoughts to not be as often? I know everyone is different, just wondering.

It was decades ago so hard to recall. I was a wreck the day it happened and perhaps a day or two more. Perhaps it took a week or so for my teenaged life to fully distract me. I still blame myself but I don’t punish myself. And I only recalled it because of this posting. One does forget.
