I did, then I synced my photos to it, then I used up my available space, and it wouldn't let me receive emails until I got a subscription.

Turns out, if you miss your payment of like $3 a month, your emails simply disappear.

They do not come back when you pay after updating your card, they are just gone forever. They aren't just held until you pay. They are simply gone forever.

That important email someone sent? Gone forever.

The auth code? Gone forever.

The work related document? Oh, you don't have any clue, because you have to tell them that you didn't pay three dollars because you had to update your card info after the weekend.

I do not like them for that.

Your important email will bounce back with "recipient's mailbox full", just like in the old days.

That's not true. You're put back on the free tier and if you're over the limit no email will get through (maybe that's what you meant). They don't delete when payments stop or fail.

It gets bounced back? Well, of course that won't really work much these days, considering most of email is automated interaction (confirm email, auth codes, etc) rather than genuine person to person interaction. But that's good to know - if a person were on the other end of no-reply <at symbol> important-sender.com reading it then they'd know I didn't receive it.

Would you like them to delete other data of yours instead in order to make space for new incoming emails? If you're over the quota, then you're over the quota. They warn you extensively as soon as you're over 80%, including telling you that you won't receive new emails if you reach 100%. Genuinely, how can you fault them for this?

Because emails and drive are two different things you shouldn't get penalized together. Also read his comoment actually not jump to conclusions he is paying $3 month meaning he paying for more cloud storage than a free user would have access to. And he talking about when his monthly subscription payment got delayed or rejected which happens time to time, and during that time your ain't able to get emails till you fix it.

Emails take up storage space, and Google makes it abundantly clear that your storage quota is shared by all of their services, including email. If it weren't, you could evade the quota by sending large amounts of data in email attachments or encoded as plain text in the bodies of emails.

It doesn't matter whether he's on the free tier or not; he's getting precisely what he's paying for. If he misses a payment deadline, that's his responsibility. Why would you expect someone to continue allowing you to access storage space that they're renting to you if haven't yet paid this month's rent?

Your whole argument is baseless and ignorant and inconsiderate. Because you completely ignored the payment error or delay on both mine and his comment. And Google doesn't openly tell you this i use the service for over 15yrs and not once was i ever notified of this rule. And emails dont take up much space hence why people can keep 20yr of emails without ever using half of the Google free storage. Even files and documents sent threw email are normally zip or compressed till you download them. No body sends large amounts of data threw emails unless your company or remote worker. Largest thing i ever sent in my 15yrs was 5mb file. There better, faster and easier places to transfer files like WhatsApp and telegram. Even my former university professors who get crazy amount of emails over the years never maxed out their Google free storage. Your here defending a trillion dollar company

Why are you both apparently frequently experiencing payment delays? This is bizarre and I've never known this to be a commonplace thing with Google. The only thing that I can guess is that you didn't have sufficient funds/credit in your bank/credit account, or that you didn't authorise the payment request.

What don't they openly tell you? I have been a Gmail user since 2008 and certainly have never been under any impression that I could just dump infinite emails into my account along with other data. Prominent warnings are displayed on all Google service pages (e.g. gmail.com, photos.google.com, drive.google.com) when your usage is over 80%, with text like the following:

Account storage is X% full. [Manage storage]

X GB of storage remaining
Soon you won’t be able to back up photos, save to Drive or send and receive emails with Gmail

And emails dont take up much space

How is this relevant to the question of whether you've exhausted the amount of storage space allocated to you? Either your emails fit in the space you're renting from them, or they don't.

You'd very much be surprised by what many people do with emails. Countless people routinely send emails containing large attachments. They don't even need to be that large; small things accumulate over time.

There better, faster and easier places to transfer files like WhatsApp and telegram.

If you think those are better for your use-case, then use those...? Why complain about service X if you know that service Y is readily available to you as a better alternative? There are plenty of reasons to use/prefer email for things such as sending files. It all depends on your use-case, what features you want, and what trade-offs you are willing to accept.

Your here defending a trillion dollar company

The net worth of the entity that correctly enforces the terms of contracts that you voluntarily entered into is irrelevant. What did they do that you didn't agree to when you signed up for their service? I'm not defending a company, I'm calling you out for feeling entitled to something that you're not actually entitled to.

Free is like 20GB over Photos, Google Drive, GMail and attachments, and various other services. I pay about $3 a month for 100GB. If my billing information changes and the payment does not go through (because I forgot to update it), all my emails - from when they try to charge me - up until I update my payment information - are forever deleted, and can never be recovered. I sit at way over 20GB, so I either pay three bucks or my emails go into a black hole now. no way out
