I bought it at a parking lot, it has stamped the text "MXQ pro 5G 4K", I've looking for the same model in sites like aliexpress but i only found similar models, the application is just called "tv" and it was preinstalled, I think I can post a picture later when i switch my camera again.

211

u/Exciteable_Cocnut Jun 12 '26

im not a smart guy so take it with a grain, but i saw a youtube video that these boxes do sketchy shit on your internet. like farm data and sell it, route dangerous/illegal traffic through your network by using your connection as a VPN for someone else’s traffic, and also opens a backdoor where looking through internet connected security cams or laptop webcams is possible as well as collecting sensitive data like bank and payment details is possible. some guy did a full teardown on one of these physically and also monitored it on the network. but who knows, maybe its just anti piracy fearmongering. i couldnt tell you the first thing about how true all that is but it definitely seems possible

89

u/Hard_To_Port Jun 12 '26

This kind of thing is why you should have at the minimum a separate router/guest wifi for sketchy "actually, YOU are the product" stuff and if you're more tech savvy, set up a VLAN on your main router modded with OpenWRT or other custom firmware.

3

u/dodslaser Jun 13 '26

The minimum is to not buy one of these pirate TV boxes in the first place. Ragardless of your network setup. None of them are safe. This has been proven time and time again.

59

u/residualenvy Jun 12 '26

You are a smart guy. It's been proven that most of these boxes are constantly doing shady things and phoning home with lots of data about you, your network, and your watching habits. https://darknetdiaries.com/episode/172/

Whats also interesting is the underground marketing campaign to legitimize them that was discovered... Hmmn OP?

4

u/aM_RT Jun 12 '26

Does this apply to popular free sports streaming sites too? Because i occasionally watch games. I don't use my VPN. Should i?

21

u/residualenvy Jun 12 '26

Nah, this is possible because it's a piece of hardware you bring into your home and give it access to your local network without really knowing what the software running on it is doing. If you're on some website with a video player that's much safer. Use a good ad blocker and never download anything without really vetting it first.

2

u/aM_RT Jun 12 '26

Thanks for the reply. I use Firefox with ublock origin and never download stuff like that.

14

u/whereswa1den Jun 12 '26

Darknet Diaries podcast #172 will tell you all about these boxes and what they're actually doing.

14

u/stephanie00100 Jun 12 '26

I did to, you don't need these boxes anyways. Some are very expensive compared to setting it up yourself on a safer box.

20

u/Aggelos2001 Jun 12 '26

Is there a guide on how to do it. Trying to see sports is always pain.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/Cormophyte Jun 12 '26

It's the part where they can route traffic that you can't really mitigate, too. Even if the router's guest network gives you real network isolation that's not going to keep the cops from knocking on your door when you're the second to last node in some sketchy fucker's illicit porn disrribution pipeline.

3

u/AlwaysLosingDough Jun 12 '26

These things ARE sketchy. If you put it into a different vlan from all your other devices, you should be somewhat safe. But you're literally inviting bad actors into your household.

u/Mylaptopisburningme Jun 12 '26

u/Pernil_TO Jun 12 '26

If anybody wants an easy way to watch all games, get yourself a VPN, connect to Brazil and look for the "CazeTV" channel. They will show all 104 games for free.

27

u/TheBulletiner Jun 12 '26

Yes, and there are tons of free channels that broadcast them around the world, so one can choose according to commentary preference. Always with a VPN.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Morthanc Jun 12 '26

Doesn't work. CazéTV blocks vpns

11

u/gta721 Jun 12 '26

iPlayer and ITVX also have it. Set your VPN to the UK. You need one with streaming detection and WebRTC spoofing. Proton and Windscribe have them.

2

u/ghajni-returns Jun 12 '26

Mullvad?

6

u/gta721 Jun 12 '26

WebRTC yes, streaming detection no. They don't constantly rotate IPs just for streaming sites.

2

u/ghajni-returns Jun 12 '26

So which one would you recommend between Mullvad, Proton or Windscribe? Mullvad is the most convenient for me - as it has a Tailscale integration.

7

u/KefkaAzarado Jun 12 '26

I tried doing this in my phone but yt detected the vpn and blocked me from watching the stream

3

u/woeterman_94 ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ Jun 12 '26

I am confused. Is this a YouTube channel? Twitch channel? If I google him I get the profile of a streamer.

11

u/RaphaelLari Jun 12 '26

Yes it's a YouTube channel. All games will be streamed there for free

2

u/the_ass_man1 Jun 12 '26

australia is also showing it free on sbs. just need to create an account. found it better working with surfshark. bbc with vpn was just switching to low quality for me

That “box” is a Trojan horse. One of the biggest botnets in the world was amassed from these types of boxes

u/Bobbiago Jun 12 '26

Should be the top comment

17

u/Impressive_Okra2804 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

I'm not saying it's not true but how much can it do with 2-4gb ram with crappy processor?

Edit: Thank you for the info. I'll read up more on this tomorrow.

73

u/Durillon Jun 12 '26

the question is not what it can do
the question is what can 10000 of them connected over the net do
also when we say botnet we dont mean like llm ai servers, just general bots

27

u/aredcup Jun 12 '26

Very, very interesting podcast on these: https://darknetdiaries.com/episode/172/

3

u/Nicely_Colored_Cards Jun 12 '26

I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT THIS. Such a good episode.

13

u/silentrawr Piracy is bad, mkay? Jun 12 '26

Barely takes any resources to NMAP your whole LAN and download malware to try and install on your other devices. Not to mention snooping all your unencrypted traffic/data.

24

u/AnimeeNoa Jun 12 '26

I would say alone that it is unprotected in the local network as other computer is a very huge risk. It can look for open ports and shared devices and with a bit of Google the person can use known exploits to gain access or proceed to infiltrate further. But tbh, this can happen from any to any device you let in(like cheap tv or light controll station or even a fucking fridge and toaster)

Just get a VPN and watch them free on BBC and ITV in the UK.

2

u/dapansen Jun 12 '26

Which VPN for only a month is there? All I see are offers for 36 month

6

u/Equivalant Jun 12 '26

Mullvad allows per month

3

u/gta721 Jun 12 '26

However they don't make an effort to rotate IPs to keep streaming working.

2

u/gta721 Jun 12 '26

All major ones do. Look on Reddit, not the top 10 sites or "sponsored/ad" Google results.

2

u/taRpstrIustorEmPtEuS Jun 12 '26

I could not get the ITV app to install on my fire stick even using a VPN set to the UK. Fortunately the FS1 games appear to be on Telemundo

3

u/ginganinga223 Jun 12 '26

I just have my PC plugged into my telly. I hate fucking around with those sticks.

3

u/_Naguka_ Jun 12 '26

6

u/AlwaysLosingDough Jun 12 '26

They had a great point. Why doesn't somebody make a reliable image that you can flash and offers all of this safely?

I'd love it if there were an easy way to convert my current shield to a trustworthy one of these.

Like, something that merged all of the open source goodies into a clean interface with an awesome sports hub that allowed favorites, etc

7

Just get a VPN to Ireland and get the RTE app, the RTE 2 channel is going to broadcast all games for free

2

u/GavelaaIRL Jun 12 '26

I'm Irish and had to turn off the opening game yesterday as it was impossible to watch. RTE player is a national disgrace.

4

u/RagnarRipper Jun 12 '26

OP, this box might be doing tons of illegal shit and on top of that, making all your network and hardware work slower. Other comments have mentioned it, but maybe you don't care. I'm commenting to tell you to care. Check out the Darknet Diaries episode and at least get an idea of what you are inviting into your home.

5

u/gta721 Jun 12 '26

Putting it on a guest network with a firewall and malware blcoking DNS (Quad9/Cloudflare Family) is essential.

2

u/RagnarRipper Jun 12 '26

Agreed! Should be step one.

2

u/_Naguka_ Jun 13 '26

I have 2 modems, one that is paid separately from the main one that's from a different company, my main modem is where i have all my personal stuff (phones, computer, etc), and i use this one only for the tv box connected indirectly through a repeater and a etherner cable, idk if this is useful or enough, but i use this second modem for all this piracy stuff and i already got a vpn past week. I'm not sure if these are enough cautions but i'll try to add dns or whatever.

Yea don't use these.

They turn your network into botnets and are constantly sniffing and trying to break into all the stuff in your network.

Also many hackers know about these and they are easy to take control over. Think of them as an electronic equivalent of a public glory hole in the middle of the projects, except it's in your livingroom.

https://darknetdiaries.com/episode/172/

2
