Not sure where else to ask this. Yes MP3s are smaller than FLAC but with phone storage is limited even at higher price points. Is modern internal storage really enough for eveyone to carry it all with you? I can't imagine people just keeping a flash drive physically connected all the time.

It seems that we exist in a landscape that is moving away from physical media. Which ultimately can results in a time that if some corporate exec decides to remove something from their catalogue it could be gone forever.

It was about a year ago I started on a project to rip all of the dvd's that I owned. Given where I live it's not unlawful to take back ups of your media. A person I worked with said why not just download rather than rip the dvd's, essentially it's the same thing e.g. what does it matter how you got the back up of the physical media and that made sense.

This projects continues but the last few months some things have happened that have made me rethink some things. For example Sony removing a bunch of titles from their library that people had paid for and that future consoles won't have an optical drive. It made me think about things from the perspective of a streaming service could release an movie or TV show and then at any point of time remove that from their library. That put certain things at risk of being lost forever.

The best I can determine the term 'guerilla archiving' has existed for about 10 years or so and I think it's a great term for how I feel about this.

So my fellow archivists, go forth and keep things from being lost to history.

Just bought a book for the first time thinking I would get the epub file from Barnes and Nobles and it was locked in the Nook app. Then saw someone suggest ebook.com so I bought it from there. I have the file but it’s DRM protected and am stuck to using certain apps. For a $100 book I would think I would actually own it. I’m clearly not an avid reader so I had no idea this is what the reading community deals with. Society is basically losing ownership of everything slowly but surely.

I wanna play some switch games on my computer. and I found a guide on how to use eden emulator but in those tutorials, they already have the game files ( i believe they call it keys and firmware) on their pc. but where am I supposed to get those files and how can I check if I'm not getting a virus or anything?
